JMU will have to go through the transition process I think.

Are we talking about the Bruce Jenner transition or the FCS to FBS reclassification transition? There's so much media misinformation out there that all of us are in a generally confused state of apprehension waiting/pleading for just some good hopeful news that doesn't make us collectively puke! I hope college football decides in general to stop "transitioning" if you will. College football fans love rivalries and regionalization...not TBA scheduled games that end up being 7PM night games in November.

Lets say you announce Wednesday:

2021 You remain FCS and play your final year of Playoff Eligibility

2022: You are considered FCS independent. You can schedule whoever you like. (Many play a hybrid schedule of FCS and FBS teams. You are not considered an official member of CAA Football, but they may let you hang around for scheduling purposes. You are not eligible for postseason.

2023. You join the Sun Belt and are eligible for all SBC Titles, however per NCAA rules you are not bowl eligible UNLESS there are not enough bowl eligible teams to fill slots, at which point you are considered.

2024: Scholarships must be at 85 and you are eligible for all FBS Postseason events.

Unlike the CUSA teams who must provide a notice to CUSA, JMU is likely eligible to play Olympic Sports in the Sun belt in 2022 if they had to, you just can't join in football. I don't think they will, but I've seen FCS conferences treat outgoing members like dirt before and force things to happen.

Thanks for this informative answer. Kind of the lines I was thinking. Just wondered if it was possible to for go a 2022 independant and just jump right in SBC play if the NCAA would approve it. I see where scheduling would be a big bump in the road.

A distinction I would make for 2024 is you would be up to 85 scholarships in football, but to be FBS you have to award at least 200 scholarships among all sports.

Based on Twitter JMU fans are as arrogant as people have been saying so far. Limited sample size but has been bad. I hope JMU fans know coming in you were just part of the Marshall package same with ODU. 99% of us were fine with just Marshall and USM. The Belt did not have to add anyone to be fine. It is not like we even needed Marshall or USM. So welcome but if any of you Twitter delusional fans are here slow your roll. Your FCS success helps only in the regard of building a culture of high expectations but it will not win you one game in the FBS. As we GS fans know dusty old trophies don't make a difference if you have a moron AD that makes horrid coaching hires.

This conference move is probably top 5-10 happiest sports moments for me.

Thanks for the welcome.

Thanks - I'm getting there - NCAA BB Tourney history of ODU is I suspect much better than A-State's?

ODU was in the Sun Belt a long time ago. They were really good at basketball. The Sun Belt use to be a basketball league.

And for those of us who are baseball fanatics, many people my not know ODU baseball was in a super regional last year and then in 2020 they were 12-4 overall when everyone's season was shut down. Marshall doesn't offer much in terms of baseball but they are in the process of finally building an on campus (or near campus) baseball stadium. In year's past they didn't have a "home" stadium so their CUSA games were played over an hour away so fan/student support was limited. I suspect once that is built their recruiting and success will pick up. USM has been solid in baseball the past 20 years (5 straight 40 win seasons not counting the shortened/cancelled 2020 season) with around 15 or so regionals....as well, USM is traditionally in the top 25 for attendance going on 20-25 years now. We've had just one losing season since the start of the 1986 season (2001) and that's the only time we ended up with less than 30 wins in the past 35 seasons. Extremely happy to be sharing a baseball conference with the likes of Louisiana, Coastal, and USA especially considering the succes they've had. As well, a former USM assistant is at ULM (Federico) so looking forward to having him back at The Pete (our baseball field nickname)

Old Dominion University is a Carnegie R2 National doctoral public research university in Norfolk, Virginia. Enrollment is 24k+

It was established in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary. In 1962 it became Old Dominion University.

The name "Old Dominion" is the State of Virginia's nickname, given to the state by King Charles II of England for remaining loyal to the crown during the English Civil War.

Thus Virginia Cavaliers because the Cavaliers supported monarchy over the republic.

Interesting that Virginia was arguably only behind Massachusetts in revolutionary fervor. Primarily because Massachusetts lost most of its home rule which alarmed the Virginia leaders.

First reduction of home rule came from the Boston martyrs incidents killing Quakers in the 1660s and accelerated in the 1750s.

Not to throw a monkey wrench in this Virginia love fest, but Marshall was founded when we were still Virginia. This makes Marshall an older Virginia school than ODU and JMU.

The more you know!

I wan't fully accurate in that ODU was ODC, Old Dominion College, from 1962 to 1969 when it became Old Dominion University.

In any event, yeah, Marshall was stablished in Va before us. 03-banghead

Can ODU, as originally a satellite campus of William&Mary, claim W&M history? Because few can compete with W&M in terms of age. While W&M claims itself to be second only to Harvard in the US based on official charter, it could be argued it is even older since it can trace an indirect lineage to a school near present day Richmond founded to convert the Powhatan before the Pilgrims even landed at Plymouth Rock.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been on CSNBBS as a lurker for years, mostly on the C-USA board. Born and raised near Hattiesburg, I have always been a Golden Eagle fan. I now live in north Mississippi, near Memphis so I hope to go to all of the future Wolves/Eagles games in Jonesboro. Those will be closer than home games for me! I lived in the Savannah area between 2016 and 2019 so I'm very familiar with Ga Southern. They have very loyal alums so that speaks volumes about the school.

So glad to be part of the Sunbelt and I look forward to our future!
