What I don’t understand is why the school named after the foremost Federalist call themselves “Dukes” with a bulldog wearing a crown and royal purple cape. Was there a dogfighting ring at Montpelier?

The “Duke” name came from our first (?) school president, named Samuel Duke. The whole royal aspect just grew out of the name.
Edit: Oh, and I have no idea why the bulldog.

I love history! That is pretty interesting, i never knew Virginia was called Old Doninion. Also I do like the fact the mascot has history to. Wonder since England is represented by a Lion is part of the reason y’all have a Lion as a mascot.
Monarchs the whole thing pre-dates or represents Colonial America!

Alright, here we go. FBS football.
We finally have an FBS conference home.
Excited about ya’ll coming to the Shenandoah Valley for football games. We are excited about traveling to your towns for some great football. This is going to be fun for sure.
We need a thread with pics and information on each home stadium and city.

Not familiar at all with them - from Virginia I guess? Don't much like spooks. Guess I could Google ODU but it would be better for ODU fans to explain it to me.
It’s the state nickname, like how North Carolina is the Tar Heel State and Maryland is the **** YOU PEDESTRIANS State. Virginia has different naming conventions from most places; among our bigger public schools are us, Virginia Commonwealth (since we’re a commonwealth and not a state technically), two named after Founding Fathers (JMU and George Mason), one named after a British couple (William and Mary) and one named Longwood.
Dont forget D3 schools Christopher Newport and Mary Washington, two more VA state schools named after people instead of being called Newport News State and Fredericksburg State like they would be if Va was like every where else. I like VA's unique names.

One of the new venues I’m most excited to visit.

Mason being called Uni of Northern Virginia or Longwood being called Central Virginia Uni or something similar are about the only ones that would be ok. The rest sound much cooler the way they are now.

Longwood is not a University, do not give them that much credit. It is a small NAIA school, that masquerades as a D3 college. It baffles me how they are even D1.

Naval Station Norfolk is the largest navy base in the U. S., and according to Wikipedia, it is the largest in the world. By the way, moving to the Sun Belt is the best thing that has happened to ODU football since Taylor Heinicke. Thanks for the invite, and Cheers, all!

You got mod powers yet? That’s at least a warning.
How is that a mod warning snowflake?

RE: Welcome New Members
Question. Does JMU have to wait for the full 2 years to become full participation member for football or can it ask the NCAA and the conference to waive the 2 year transition period if we feel ready to go earlier? Other sports already compete at that level so can they start in the conference as soon as their season starts?

Ain't that the truth. My daughters are pretty good field hockey players and really want to play hockey in college. We only have one rule in our house about them choosing a college program. Anywhere in VA or NC is fine but no Liberty or Longwood.
