Welcome New Members
For Moderation purposes, Southern Miss fans are now considered as SBC members.

JMU, ODU, and Marshall fans will receive the same treatment over the next several days unless something changes.

If you are a fan of one of these schools and have been forum banned from SBCbbs, PM either myself, Skully, EagleWay, or CBT about how to come off the ban.

Any current mods who are fans of these schools will be given mod privileges here AFTER their school is officially announced by the Sun Belt. I will post a list of those when it comes time.

Can someone explain Old Dominion to me, because I'm lost on what/who they are. Not familiar at all with them - from Virginia I guess? Don't much like spooks. Guess I could Google ODU but it would be better for ODU fans to explain it to me.

It’s the state nickname, like how North Carolina is the Tar Heel State and Maryland is the **** YOU PEDESTRIANS State. Virginia has different naming conventions from most places; among our bigger public schools are us, Virginia Commonwealth (since we’re a commonwealth and not a state technically), two named after Founding Fathers (JMU and George Mason), one named after a British couple (William and Mary) and one named Longwood.

Old Dominion University is a Carnegie R2 National doctoral public research university in Norfolk, Virginia. Enrollment is 24k+

It was established in 1930 as the Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary. In 1962 it became Old Dominion University.

The name "Old Dominion" is the State of Virginia's nickname, given to the state by King Charles II of England for remaining loyal to the crown during the English Civil War.

Interesting. Louisiana has parishes and French law and VA is a Commonwealth, not a state. Norfolk is a Navy town, no?

The only reason I know about James Madison is because they were a candidate to join the Sun Belt last go round - seems that the are purple and have a nice stadium frequently filled with football fans.

I don't know your history, but ODU has appeared in 12 Division I NCAA Tournaments since 1980. Our record is 3–12.

Ours is mainly in name only as I understand it legally. Runs as a state.

And yes Norfolk is home to the largest naval base in the world. “The Old Dominion” is a nickname for VA so that’s where the name comes from. We were originally a division of William & Mary before breaking off into a separate University. William & Mary being named from English Monarchs is how Old Dominion got its nickname of Monarchs. The lion being “King of the Jungle” is how we got our mascot.

That's both good and bad. A-State is 0-1. We had a good NIT stretch in the late 80s/Early 90s with NIT runs but we're really not good a BB historically. Beat Memphis and Stanford on the road early but never won the NIT.

Did ODU leave the Sun Belt at the same time the American South merged with the Sun Belt?

We are 11-11 in 11 NIT Tournements since 1977.
In 1975 we DID win the Div II National Championship.

EDIT: we were in the SB from 1982 - 1991
