BYU hopefully beats Texas a few times before they leave.
Then I target three candidates for twelve.
A P5 conference cannot dip too low academically no regional .No one ranked below a the lowest P5 member.
Former P5 staus is a plus like a Cincinnati for example.
My preference one MW and either U Conn all sports or two AAC.

BYU

Later Colorado st , Cincy and UCF all with a Nebraska type deal.

They won't join.

Yes where Rutgers and Maryland got better deals .
BYU has a P5 size fan base facilities and a national title.
Add them you have a 9 team conference for 8 home games and add interest.
The other three adds would start at a disadvantage and build up.
If no other Big 12 team leaves they could end up with a solid 4th or 5th best conference.
A couple Big 12 teams will elevate someone has to win it.
Texas and Oklahoma if they drop off could become less relevant like Nebraska and Arkansas have .Miami and FSU even slipped after joining the ACC.

Miami did fall off after joining the ACC. FSU dominated the ACC and won two national titles the first 10 years it was in the league.

IMO Texas and Oklahoma will never be anything but blue-blood blue-chip programs. Texas has one won national title in the last 50 years, but has been a blue-chip school the whole time. Oklahoma has won one national title the last 35 years and they have been as well.

I agree with Texas' blue chip status but they haven't really been great these 40 year:

1980s - kinda sucked
1990s - kinda sucked (big upset of Nebraska in 1996)
2000s - great ten year run
2010s - back to sucking for the most part

My alma mater has a reputation for doing more with less. Texas has a reputation for doing less with more -- a lot less with a lot more.

That's my point - Texas is a blue chip big brand even when they aren't very good.

That's true-blue status. Lighter-blue programs are only blue when they are winning.

Outside of the box thinking....What if the Big XII through out a proposal to the likes of Colorado State, New Mexico, or Louisiana. Basically put out a notice that we are staying together and want to add 2 schools. However, to apply and be admitted you must meet the following criteria...

Raise your athletic budget to x amount of dollars within 5 years

Facility commitments

50 % of conference revenue for the first 10 years.

Etc, etc.

Which schools have enough passionate alumni with $$$ to pull this off? Maybe CSU? Just a wild thought, bash away.

ESPN has probably already advised BYU to steer clear as they torpedo the Leftover 8.

Yep, good point. The Little 8 will be going to Fox or CBS for future contracts.

Oh man, how awful! Imagine FOX showing Oklahoma State vs Texas Tech or Baylor vs West Virginia. While ABC is showing an AAC matchup. I wonder who would get better ratings???? Hmmmmmm

Which CUSA schools will the AAC be propping up soon? Maybe ECU will be able to compete once the top AAC teams leave for the Big 12.

2) If KS, OSU and ISU and Texas Tech fly this chicken coop, they need at least 6 to build from.

3) For at least two years, a 10-team conf w Cinci and Houston fielding 5 Top 25 football teams a year probably does as well as the ACC and Pac many years and certainly places someone in an expanded playoff.

4) Someone is going to elevate in this format. Iowa State? Houston? TCU? Kansas State? Someone is gonna, without OU on its schedule, run the table and be a national story/playoff contender. ONE final four with a new B12 school involved ends the controversy. If that can happen, it MAY even convince KU, ISU and TTCH they are better off staying put.
I think being at ten proved to be too risky . They will look to go to 12. Academics will play a small role like no one below the bottom P5 school.

ESPN has destroyed who? CUSA? Oh boy!

The Big East? Didnt most of their schools land in a power conference and start making decent or great money? The C7 are doing fine. Im sure the only losers from that fracture were Cincinnati, USF and Temple.

I would argue UCF's national title is more legitimate than BYU's. FSU also didn't slip after joining the ACC, it took over a decade later for the fall to occur. Miami on the other hand is fair to say, they have yet to win an ACC Football Championship.

Cajuns would be there before the ink is dry. Especially since we are breaking ground on a football stadium renovation after the ‘21 season. Athletic budget has more than doubled over the last 10 years.

Any program that says they wouldn’t join the remaining Big12 universities is lying. Numerous Final 4’s men and women, Top 25 football programs, and CWS appearances.

Top to bottom it’s a strong league. It just doesn’t have that big brand (Texas) or singular elite program (Oklahoma) anymore.

They should of already invited BYU, Houston, and Boise State. You invite Boise as travel partner for BYU and rival. You also get BSU just in case BYU has already been contacted by ESPN. The reason you invite Houston aside from the market is there is no way they don't wanna play those Texas teams. They will say yes.
After that you get UCF and USF. Makes sense. Then you add Cincinnati. There is your 14. If BYU or a Big 8 team bails you have Memphis, SMU, And Colorado State to take.

Big 12 has a deal with FOX. Between FOX, CBS, and the word of streaming services looking for sports, they will be fine.

The distribution started at $9M a season in 2013 and increment from there. Rutgers only received over $20M in this last few seasons. Because we borrowed against future earnings to close the gap Rutgers is still not getting a full share. Maryland got a much better deal from the Big Ten to get them to leave the ACC.
Any idea why? All the information I’ve heard over the past 8/9 years is that Maryland Athletics were in desperate shape and the B1G threw them a lifeline.

I think that they wanted to get both the NJ/NYC market access with Rutgers AND the Maryland/DC access with Maryland, but Maryland had more leverage since they were already in the ACC. My understanding is that Maryland got some off that money as an advance against future earnings, but a Maryland fan could give a better answer to that. Between the low end money they were getting from the B1G and the money they owed to the Big East/AAC Rutgers was essential not getting anything for two or three years while the rest of the B1G was getting $40M+ a year plus.

The payouts were low, because all three schools had to buy a full share in the BIGTEN network. None of the three received a full yearly payouts until they had finished buying in. Neb was screwed because they we're the first to have to buy-in. The other schools were all part of the conference when the network was founded. Dollar wise, RU and Md got a worse deal than Neb, because the network was worth more per share when we joined the conference. The BIG helped Maryland buy its way out of the ACC by loaning the $$ to pay the exit fee.
