Aresco went through the Big East breakup and the B12 charade of poaching teams from the AAC to know where he had to land on this. The more I read and uncover about Bowlsby makes me glad Jim Bob is not our commissioner. I've never had an issue with Mike but I do appreciate him even more now.

QSECOFR is roughly the equivalent to root on *nix or Administrator on Windows. It was first used on S/38 and subsequently on AS/400 and its follow ons.

At one time I had my NHRA 9 Second license and an IRL license. QSECOFR appeared on all of my go fast cars.

Honestly, I have very little confidence that the 8 stay together - the other 3 leagues will have to make a move to counter the SEC.

What is more bothersome to me is the NIL, transfer portal, and now superconference building - college football might be at it's end as we knew it.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are underestimating UC's possible options a bit (gotta try with ACC at least and what the heck, might as well try with the SEC and Big10 until we get a firm no which could take a while) and especially underestimating the possible leverage of the AAC vis-a-vis the Big12. Maybe the networks won't agree (although we'll never know for sure), but I think an AAC adding the key leftovers from the Big12 is worth more than the leftover Big12 (especially if they lose a few more key schools) adding a few AAC/MWC teams. And for UC specifically, don't forget to factor in potential entrance/exit fees and/or partial shares. There's a lot more negotiating leverage with those doing the inviting compared to those getting invited.

I'm not as down on the bottom half of the AAC as many here seem to be. To that end, I bet we'd see a lot of different versions of the "bottom half" of the AAC even among posters here. More importantly, ditching any team is a very risky maneuver and I'm not sure I'd support it except as a last resort. I think the more realistic version, and the one I'd probably prefer, is adding 3-8 from the Big12. 3 would make 14 for football including Navy. All 8 would make 18 for football excluding Navy. Or go even bigger and add BYU for football only to make 20 for football and 18 for most other sports. I don't see how BYU could turn this down if they can find a plausible home for their other sports, but if they did we might have to take a hard look at how football-only Navy fits in.

So I like the idea of adding 6 and going to 2 divisions of 8 (9 for football including Navy and BYU). Take OK St. ($), Kansas (BB royalty), WVU (they just fit geographically) and Iowa St. (good all around and midwest culture). And then take two from Baylor/TTU/TCU/KSU. I kinda tentatively like Baylor primarily for the BB NC and I guess KSU because they aren't in Texas, but whatever. We could see:
East: UC, UCF, USF, Memphis, Tulane, Temple, WVU, ECU plus Navy for football
West: Houston, SMU, Tulsa, OK St., Kansas, Iowa St., and 2 from Baylor/KSU/TTU/TCU plus BYU for football

I'm a little leery of us getting too Texas filled, but if we went with all 8:
East: UC, UCF, USF, Memphis, Tulane, Temple, WVU, ECU, Iowa St. (and Navy for football)
West: Houston, SMU, Tulsa, OK St., Kansas, Baylor, KSU, TTU, TCU (and BYU for football)

Not especially huge markets but very strong football and basketball in both divisions.

I kid. That's interesting stuff; thanks for teaching me something today.

I wrote the above before the news about Bowlsby/ESPN/AAC came out but that seems to reinforce my perceptions of the leverage here between the AAC and let's call them the Medium8. The AAC has a lot of leverage here, especially IF they can convince UC, UCF, Memphis, etc. not to jump at the first hint of interest from the Mid8.

On the other side, the Medium8 faces a similar challenge to hold on to all 8 in light of possible interest for a few from the Pac10/Big10/ACC to make joining the Medium8 worthwhile to new adds from the AAC or elsewhere.

Reminds me of the Big East which I still think could have worked out had everyone stuck together. United we stand, divided we fall and all that. Seems like something is going to have to give, the question is who/what.

The Athletic seems to confirm there's something to Bowlsby's allegations:

Well, I believe that this little episode has totally debunked the "power" team myth that's permeated for the past decade.

You're a "power" team until ESPN says you're not.

Reading all these BXII fans complain on social media is hilarious. It reminds me of the D List Actress who started on one big hit back in the mid 90s getting pulled over for a DUI and asking the cop, “Do you know who I am?”

This is a completely accurate and prescient analogy.

It could also mean that the AAC didn't reach out to some of the other Big 12 schools (Kansas, WVU, ISU) because they believe they will land somewhere else.

I think that's right. And insiders to all this scheming certainly have information at this point that we as fans don't. Did Aresco (and others in college sports) know about the TX/OK breakaway weeks or months ago, or were these contacts the B12 alleges taking place in the past few days? I'd suggest it was the former. And that's consistent with your statement that some other B12 schools have already been picked off--it's just not public yet. Dissolving the B12 seems more likely in this case and may save these member schools millions in exit fees.

In my mind I keep going back to some statements Coach Fickell has made in the past year or so. He spoke broadly, but confidently, about college football being reshaped in the near future and he's said he tells recruits not to arbitrarily divide P5 and G5. Is that all just good "spin" or was he foreshadowing what insiders knew already?

Looking back, most of us had no clue until the crawl on the bottom of the ESPN screens that Pitt and Syracuse had left the Big East and the dominoes began to fall. A month ago, none of us could have imagined TX and OK partnering to leave the conference they dominated. The coming days could be a wild ride for many.

To keep it simple, Aresco can not legally reach out to the remaining schools in the Big 12 about joining the AAC because that would be considered tampering. He can commute to them through back channels but Aresco cannot pick up the phone and contact the president of a Big 12 school and talk to them about membership.

Fug it! Go for the kitchen sink Mike! B12 is either going to stay at 8 for the remainder of their deal or they'll come over to the AAC. Love 'em or hate 'em we have ESPN protecting us as a viable asset. Again, Mike knows the media rights landscape.
