RE: All Things Realignment 2.0
If the top half of the AAC can drop the bottom half of the AAC, and add 6 or so equals, that's a massive win. Massive. That's the realistic goal IMO. ACC is a lottery ticket, but it's worth scratching.

My guess is the schools that can will look for landing spots in the other major conferences and whatever is leftover will join the american or visa versa to form a best of the rest league.

I think we end up in the same or marginally better position after the dust clears.

Just imho.
This is only the first domino. ACC is next, when that happens who knows but it most likely will. They are riddled with low level schools that don't bring eyeballs or market share. Wake, NC State, Duke football and many others. Clemson, Miami,
FSU are about the only name football brands.

UC will be navigating more of these breakups. 2030 NCAA will look a lot different than now.

I am starting to believe the 2 -3 super conferences, or a loose independent blue bloods selling their football contracts on their own and playing each other almost exclusively.

RE: All Things Realignment 2.0
I have a feeling that we'll end up with two 20-22 team super conferences. SEC adds Clemson, FSU and some combination of Oklahoma State, KU, Miami, Ga Tech, UNC and Duke. Big Ten adds 6 Pac schools (probably the four California schools plus Oregon and Washington) and maybe UVA, Colorado or UNC.

If you're Indiana or Mississippi State, you punched your golden ticket by being in the right place at the right time a century ago. If you're Oregon State or Wake, you get left behind.

RE: All Things Realignment 2.0
I keep reading articles from ESPN writers on realignment. The whole premise of "what will the university presidents want to do?" is a bit farcical. These ESPN writers should just go interview ESPN's CEO/VP of college football programing and ask what their plan is to out do Fox or kill off certain conferences rather than act like this is an organic process.

One of the ESPN articles lamented that the ACC is locked into a horrible TV deal without mentioning who the TV deal is with! Rediculous.

I can't see Texas and Oklahoma ending up anywhere but the SEC despite any overtures from the ACC, PAC-12 or B1G. Sounds like membership is just a formality of votes away. The real question is how soon...

Bill Shakespeare said "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

But I think it stupidly may matter. What if years ago UC had changed it's name?

Let us see:

Ohio Polytechnic University OPU
Ohio Institute of Technology OIT
Ohio Technology University OTU

I keep hearing some conferences object to associating with a "City School".

Would OPU or OIT be easier to sell as the #2 Ohio School (which by almost any measure we are)?

Akron tried branding itself as Ohio Poly a few years ago. It ended miserably and the people of Akron chased the university president down with pitchforks.

There is no chance they would put Georgia, Auburn, and Florida in one pod and have the mouthbreathers in the north together.

Akron tried branding itself as Ohio Poly a few years ago. It ended miserably and the people of Akron chased the university president down with pitchforks.

That probably had more to do with the $80M budget deficit he created, the 500 staff and 60 faculty he laid off, an enrollment decrease of roughly 20% in his tenure there (all prior to Covid btw), forcing most of the students to enroll in online-only courses even though they were required to live on campus, his desire to partner with ITT Tech even as they faced a massive class action suit, and him still spending $900,000 on a home renovation paid for by the University...but yeah, the name change wasn't great either.

I dunno...

I "get" calling Colorado and Utah. No way they are coming but, OK, make the call.

My next, and CLEAR, #1 option is BYU. If I were Bob Bowlsby, I'd have been on the phone to Provo constantly since last week. You're ONLY worried about football at the moment when it comes to BYU. BYU is the only "name" brand out there that can even attempt to stop the bleeding and, frankly, you already have some experience with dealing with "the Longhorn Network" to hammer out a similar deal with BYU.

Following BYU, I'm turning my attention to Cincinnati and UCF...IN THAT ORDER. Cincinnati to provide a link to WVU (not that WVU cares about it right now) and UCF for the reasons he cited. That's my clear #2 and #3 options.

Boise State??? Meh. They "won" back in the early aughts...they haven't been prominent since then. And clearly they haven't been up since Petersen left for Washington. Given their location, I'd only consider them if BYU came aboard and well down the list.

So, who's really up after UC and UCF? MEMPHIS. (God, I hate saying that.) Houston has a market, but as the guy notes, nobody in Houston cares all that much. Different sport, but Houston can't fill up a 9k basketball arena if it is raining outside...and Houston BB is "hot" right now. Houston FB is stuck with Dana "the Mullet" Holgerson for the foreseeable future and is sinking in malaise. And SMU??? They never really recovered from the Death Penalty and while I like Ford stadium, they draw flies. Memphis...God bless their fans...is the next program I'd look at; big stadium, big city, easy travel for the IIX remainders.

That being said, I do appreciate his point about this being a matter of timing: "lure" (his exact word) some programs in before the conference disintegrates. The classic "bait and switch." If Big IIX expansion happens that's the only agenda.
