RE: MBB Recruiting
Same class as Tyler Nickel... what a dream class that would be.

RE: MBB Recruiting
I think Nickel is a long shot. UNC has been on him hard, as has NC State, VT, and Iowa. Ya never know - his girlfriend Zoli Khalil, from Spotswood, was just offered by our WBB team...but still think it’s a long shot. If Byington managed to get one of them though, that would be great.

RE: MBB Recruiting
Mark Byington was listed among the coaches at the East Rock game over the weekend at a big showcase. The others were all high majors but JMU still seems to be recruiting Nickel.

I was just pointing out that if JMU somehow lands Paul Lewis a 3-4 star former Maryland recruit that may make convincing Tyler Nickel to stay home. It would be the perfect storm- immediate impact freshmen to go with a good group of returnees in 2022.

anybody know what happened with Paul Lewis and the re-opening of his recruitment? Did Maryland back away or did Paul decide to look elsewhere?

My cousin who is a Maryland alum and follows closely said that they brought in some other recruits at his position. I think they still had a spot for him but it was apparent that he wouldn’t get playing time early on.

My understanding is that Maryland stopped contacting him and kind of ghosted him.

RE: MBB Recruiting
It sucks getting ghosted like that but I'm not surprised. It's a big time business at that level. Maryland's incoming class for the Fall is all consensus 4 star guys. Paul is a 3 star guy. Guessing they found other, shinier toys and hoped he'd get the message. If you look at who offered him so far, it wasn't really bluebloods. That said, he'd be a really nice addition to our team. C'mon Paul-continue your brother's legacy and sign on with us.

I agree that if Matt can get Paul to join us that would be a huge pitch for By to use on Nickel. Imagine getting those two and pairing them with Amadi et al., that would absolutely create something special in the Burg.

I'm not saying Byington will land Nickel or Lewis but you have to imagine he's got a lot of pitches to use: Gonzaga's rise from mid-major, impressive upperclassmen in the future to compliment, the AUBC, hometown/family connections, and finally the WCWS and subsequent ESPN coverage. I know Shane released an article a few weeks ago talking to By and O'Regan and the impact the WCWS has had so far on recruiting.

Hard to say if we have success there but our situation right now might give us the best chance we'll ever have at making a jump like that in bball.

Yep I feel bad for the tar heels and panthers when they learn of the news that Nickel is staying home.

RE: MBB Recruiting
Tyler would be a star at JMU and get tons of media attention and hype. He will likely disappear on the UNC bench. I can't blame him for going for the golden ring, though. When it proves out of reach, he can always come home and spend the best part of his college career as a Duke.

It almost feels as if the way college basketball is we have to recruit these kinds of players after 1-2 years at UNC and grab them from the transfer portal. Hope Byington can land him though

Too tall! Doesn't fit the 6'3"-6'7" template.

RE: MBB Recruiting
His wingspan fits the mold. I see him as a bit slow of foot and overweight. He has a good frame so with conditioning and the proper nutrition, he could make a good CAA post player.

His release is slow and he doesn’t look like he could take a CAA level talent off the dribble. He reminds me a bit of Wilson in his Freshman year. I see this guy as a player that needs to be developed but has potential if he has a good work ethic.
