MBB Recruiting - NJDuke97 - 05-29-2020 08:52 AM

I know there has been a lot of focus on the 2020 class and the staff has done a great job there through a combination of transfers and high school recruiting. The question is now that 2020 is done how soon will we be active in 2021? I believe JMU will have 3 scholarships to fill (Lewis, Jacobs, and Frederick)

I noticed today that JMU is conducting a zoom meeting for 2021 PG prospect Quadir Pettaway. Pettaway is a Newport News prospect and per verbal commits he is 4 stars yet only shows offers from JMU, ODU and Hampton at this point. Perhaps he wants to stay local but he looks like a promising prospect. Does anyone know anything more about him?

When I go to verbalcommits.com and look at the '21 targets, the first observation is the tremendously long number of point guards attached to us. I doubt we are seriously being considered for several, if not most, of them, but interesting nonetheless.

Haven’t looked at specifics, but this feels like Army’s football recruiting approach. If you target/offer 10 or 15 four star guys, and land one, that’s a much better outcome than just signing the two star guys you know you can easily get.

Edit: looks like most of our offers/interest are to two star guys, with a couple 3 and 4 stars sprinkled in. Hope we would be considered by many of them, HCMB has been doing a great job of selling the program thus far.

All of them attributed to Lou Rowe. As far as I know, Byington has not offered more than 1 or 2 players for 2021. That Tschetter kid out of Minnesota.

That makes sense then. It did feel like Rowe would offer 10+ PG’s a class.

Speaking of star ratings, I won't be surprised to see if far-more-than-normal are kept at 2* longer than usual. Normally, there are a lot of guys rated 2* until they are evaluated during the spring and summer showcase events prior to their senior and/or junior years before being raised in a normal year up to 3* or 4* perhaps. With April thru possibly all of summer being wiped out, the re-evaluations and raising of any stars may be delayed. We'll see...

That could be a good thing, as some talented guys may fly under the radar for a while.

Per Shane Mettlen JMU has a zoom Call with a 3 star 2021 PG prospect Andrew McConnell today. He’s from Georgia and it looks like Charleston Southern and Stetson have offered and East Tennessee has recently shown interest.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting - Bawlmer Duke - 06-05-2020 07:30 AM

Mettlen has a new article out on 2021 recruiting :

https://www.dnronline.com/sports/college/byington-shifts-focus-to-2021-class/article_0cffd434-a71e-5493-a16f-e887dab71039.html

Andrew McConnell 6'1 (PG) out of GA
Myles Rice 6'2 (PG) out of GA
Isaiah Folkes 6'2 (PG) out of VA Middleburg Academy (Rowe also was recruiting)
Terrence Butler r. (SF) out of VA Bishop McNamara (brother of Tasia Butler JMU WBB)
Quadir Pettaway (PG) out of VA Miller School (Rowe recruited as well)

Tyler Nickle out of East Rockingham has not heard from JMU, but his dad had a line about "I'm sure Coach B has been busy getting a team for 2020"

Nickel is also class of 2022 right now, and he's been ranked as a Top 100 recruit for that class by Rivals. Looks like we have an offer out to him, per the below article, but HCMB 2.0 might be taking it a year at a time at this point (i.e. focus on 2020, then 21, etc.)

The success of MB's first season will likely have a major effect on his future recruiting. If he can contend for the CAA his first year - that will certainly pay dividends for him. I think first opinions/results are pretty important.

Agree the first year is important, but not sure the bar is so high that we must be in the top 3.

We were 2-16 in conference last year! I would think any winning record over 0.500 the first year would be a big improvement and show we are headed the right direction. I’m hoping for much more, but also realistic that it may take a year or two for the pieces to fully gel. Coach B is at a disadvantage right now in terms of having limited ability to work with the players or hold practice. Wouldn’t be surprised if things start off a little shaky and come together towards the end of the season.

Looks like we offered Lucas Taylor, a 6-6 SG from Wake Forest, NC.

Very impressive offer list including Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Xavier, ODU, Providence, USF, etc.

Nice - another 3 star guard.

Two huge improvements from my teams I'm expecting next year simply because the previous coaches were sooooo bad.

I think JMU Men's basketball, & the Washington Redskins defense are going to be night and day from last year.

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting - Anders - 06-08-2020 08:10 PM

Offered Bez Mbeng, 6-2 PG from Good Counsel HS

Looks like he currently has offers from Robert Morris, Towson, Saint Francis, La Salle, Bryant

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting - Wear Purple - 06-08-2020 08:15 PM

When I saw this at verbal commits site earlier I also noticed the number of point guards and all positions for that matter has been trimmed significantly. I wonder if they are doing some cleansing and/or formatting changes at the site currently.

I mean, just a few days ago there were at least 15 PG’s listed as targets in this ‘21 class connected to JMU. Now it lists just 2.

Maybe a bunch of those were LR targets, and they reset JMU's list for that reason? 15 PGs seems a big list at this point, unless they are all very high level guys, and just hoping one or two will commit.

Coach B recruiting is very different from Lou Rowe recruiting

RE: 2021 MBB Recruiting - JMUNation - 06-09-2020 06:57 AM

I am very impressed with this hire. I am confident JMU got it right this time. I so hope there is basketball this year.
