The A5 schools would love for the G5 to split from the CFP lol
Nope. You haven't quite "grokked" the idea yet. The purpose of letting it be known
that they're holding meetings to discuss their options for leveraging their viewership would be 1,000 times more nuanced than that.
The idea isn't to immediately split from the NCAA or from the CFP, but by
proving that it is prepared to go independent if it has to, it can begin to leverage its potential to do things such as
securing a slot in an expanded CFP,
preventing the P5 conferences from taking 3/4 of the at-large bids, and perhaps even
pursuing autonomous status.
The P5 has been making threats and leveraging their power over the past decade, and it has gotten them plenty. It's simply time for the G5 conferences to make the first few moves needed to begin to prove their ability to do the same.
The total enrollment of the G5s and FBS independents is approximately the same as that of the P5 schools, and their viewership has been increasing steadily, as has the number of non-P5 FBS teams in the Final top 25 lists over the past 6 years.
