The 2 deep defense is the best I have seen at UC.

Freaking out? No. I do remember people thinking that the defense should be dominant and felt that they were a little disappointed. If anything the games since then have proven them right that the expectation should be of a dominant unit, which we have seen since.

The game was meaningless. We weren't going to know anything about them if they won 90-0. Now we know

If a unit plays below their capabilities, expect people to bring it up in game threads since that’s sort of what they are for. Doesn’t mean people were “freaking out”.

If people were actually freaking out, I would understand it but I recall most people making the point that they expected the defense to be a dominant unit and they didn’t play up to that standard against AP. I even recall saying it didn’t mean they wouldn’t end up being a dominant unit this season, but it was worth noting that they didn’t play up to the level most expected. Again, that’s hardly freaking out and more along the lines of discussing the game and based on how the defense has played having those types of expectations seems right.

RE: Memphis Tigers Game
Feels to me like we are figuring out some pieces offensively as the season moves along. That is really great news.

1. We’ve figured out that Ridder is way better when we do not run up the gut on 1st and 2nd down. Quit putting him behind in down and distance. Let him run. He’s a weapon. Use it. Open the playbook early in drives.

2. We’ve figured out that Renfro, McConnell and perhaps O’Quinn are an improvement on the interior OL. Last 2 games with those 3 next to each other have been the best I’ve seen the line perform in 2 seasons.

3. Perhaps we’ve finally figured out that Ford is way better when you don’t look at him like a clone of Doaks. Change up the run game to allow him to bounce inside out and he can be explosive. Let him use his vision rather than calling him to run up the gut.

There are others but those are the 3 that have jumped out at me.

It was not a long one, but you were right.

He coulda run a lot longer if the LoS was further back, but a 33 yard TD run ain't exactly a short one. Either way, I don't think that will be the last one we see from him this year.

Twice

I try to stay humble (see my first response above), but OK I"ll just admit it:

He really has an elite level 2 step burst that they will hopefully take advantage of by running him outside more.

Any update on Pierce? Hopefully it’s not as bad as it initially looked, but I’m not holding my breath.

Excellent observations. I agree with all of that and would add they have utilized our tight ends a little more the past the past couple weeks, particularly that RPO play where Ridder rolls out and throws a short pass to Whylie. They did that a lot the last couple years with Deguara and seemingly forgot that play the first three games.

Seems like Ridder is getting more comfortable with Michael Young and Jordan Jones. I truly hope Pierce can get back quickly, he is the only WR we have with size and length. That long TD grab was a thing of beauty.

What an unholy beatdown.

If that game had a soundtrack, it would be from Metallica and Slayer. Absolutely brutal.

RE: Memphis Tigers Game
Ill add an observation. This defense is on pace to be one of the best ever at UC. Combination of talent, depth, scheme and coaching. We've held two of FBS's top offenses to 23 points total. Let that sink in. Seriously. You can't run on us and a few of our DB's will be playing on Sundays. The confidence these guys have is so apparent in production and in body language. It feeds over to the offense. Did I mention how well these guys tackle in the open field? We knew with all the returning starters that the dee was going to be good. This good? Elite.

We'll have several DL playing on Sundays as well.

I did expect the defense to be dominant. They have multiple players on defense that will eventually play on Sundays and they have 2 defensive genius’s guiding them in Freeman and Fick. They don’t seem to have a weak link at any unit or level of the defense and it makes them even better as a unit than they are individually.

Now I won’t say I expected quiet this level of play, but I’m also not surprised at it. What a fun unit to watch.

RE: Memphis Tigers Game
Just to add...last season the Cats dee allowed 21 points per game. That ranked #24 in FBS. Going into today's game they were allowing 12.5 points a game - good for 10th best. They allowed only 10 points against the Tigers so that per game average will get a tad better. Take away the 20 points allowed in the scrimmage against Austin Puke and they'd be top 5.

Points allowed...
20 AP
10 Army
7 USF
13 SMU
10 Memphis

Sad that we will not be in the stands for the AAC Champ Game or likely The NY6 Game.
