Absolutely. I guess the question should be, what direction does everyone hope we go for with the next hire? Career educator, fundraiser, politician..

And before anyone does it, don't say Paul Trible. The dude is 73 and has been at CNU since 96.

Wow! This one really came out of left field for me. Best of luck to Broderick of course, and I'm glad he's staying on for the next year, but what does everyone think about the timing of this? It seems like ODU would rather not be having to look for a new president while all of this is going down. Will we be able to find a good replacement with so much uncertainty?

I good university president, especially of a state school, needs to be all three. Of course it's hard to find someone equally good at all three. When Koch was hired, the emphasis was on finding someone who had prior presidential experience. That was obviously not a major factor in hiring Broderick, but they were impressed enough with him to give him the job. My guess is fundraising will be given emphasis, given the fiscal difficulties ODU faces now, that weren't this bad just 4 months ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if Austin Agho gets the nod either, especially if advancing our health sciences is a big priority. He is currently the Provost for the University and the Vice President of Academic Affairs, and has a doctorate in Hospital and Health administration.

If they hire from within I'd be less worried about potential disruptions in this already calamitous time.

I deleted my original tweet about Brandon as I was DMed a good explanation of why it likely won't be him by someone I trust. So, I guess we can cross his name off. LOL.

Of the qualities listed above, I would put political clout at the top of the list right now. Nothing from Richmond seems to go in ODU's favor lately, and I think that needs to be turned around before anything else can be really fixed.

Thanks for a job well done J Brod. Now let’s hope ODU takes this opportunity to make a home run hire who can really take ODU to a new level of prominence and academic (as well as athletic) prestige. It’s time to catch up with GMU again academically. If the new Pres can make the EVMS merger happen, even better.

We couldn't get Trible anyway. CNU gives him a $3M plantation style waterfront mansion on 5 acres where he hosts big parties and his kids and grandkids... simply nothing comparable in the entire city of Norfolk... but he has shown me politcian is the way to go.

John has done a great job during his tenure. I’m excited about who is next in line. The Board of Visitors will make the right decision.

When is Northams term up? would he be a candidate or to politically charged. Certainly would give us an inside connection to legislature.

Also as an EVMS grad could have influence over a merger

Please no. He supported the EVMS/W&M merger when he was in the Virginia Senate despite representing Norfolk.

EVMS explores becoming part of William & Mary
Quote:Sen. Ralph Northam, D-Norfolk, called a merger between William and Mary and EVMS an "exciting possibility" that would be a "win-win" proposition for both schools. Northam is a pediatric neurologist who practices in Hampton Roads. He graduated from EVMS and is an assistant professor of neurology at the school.

Northam said he hoped that if a merger between William and Mary and EVMS goes forward, ODU would still partner with the schools on programs.

To put it frankly, I'm not sure Northam would put on a good face for the University.

I don't like Northam, but if he came in with a plan, he does have the connections. I would be open minded.

RE: Pres. Broderick Stepping Down in 2021
No way on Northam. He sold out his entire constituency when he supported merging EVMS with W&M, and the only logical reason (considering he was hired to represent Norfolk) is because of selfish interests. Second, theres no way ODU, with the highest enrollment of African American students in the state outside of HBCUs is going to hire a president known for wearing blackface. Thats a non-starter. Whoever it is, I hope they bring some new energy, a zeal for improving academic and athletic reputation, a desire to continue making ODU a thriving residential destination campus, political clout in Richmond, and fundraising capability. Problem is, I cant think of who that could be at the moment, but we basically need the ODU version of Paul Trible. Maybe theres a good VP at GMU, VT or JMU that we could snipe.
