Other than my time in the military I lived in the 513 area code for all of my first 48 years. I go back to Cincinnati now and the traffic, human density, noise and litter makes me break out in hives...which is weird. Never noticed any of that until made a life change.

Interesting how different the perspective of Cincinnati life can be - my wife and I were born and raised in New York City - when we moved here we both were delighted that the pace of life had slowed to a crawl.

I grew up in Cincinnati and had older siblings that moved to NYC and LA, so I thought of Cincinnati as a smaller town. I started a practice in NW OH that has a Findlay office. One of my first patients there was an older lady from a surrounding county who had recently lost her husband. I asked why she had moved to Findlay. She said she wanted to see what life was like in the city.

RE: OT: COVID Check-In
A friend’s mother died of the virus in Texas. A childhood neighbor and her two daughters had it - all will survive but my neighbor has taken a long time to recover. My spouse works in a dialysis clinic a had a patient die of the virus. One other patient has been diagnosed and a third is exhibiting symptoms. Another friend of mine in Boston claims she had it back in January.

Findlay is big time. HQ of Cooper Tire, former HQ of Marathon Oil, big Whirlpool factory. Findlay University (who just closed Urbana University which it owned).

Franklin University in Columbus owned Urbana.

Other than that, you're spot on. Findlay is a cool little town and one of my favorite HS football stadiums to coach in. The south side of town has some of the coolest historic homes you'll see, and Deitsch's Candy Shop has some phenomenal caramels and truffles.

Good Lord, doss.

Marathon Oil's HQ moved to Texas in 1982. Marathon Petroleum (a much bigger company) is still headquartered in Findlay today. It was part of Marathon Oil until it spun off in 2011. So either you're 10 years behind or you think that 40 years ago is recent enough that it still makes the town "big time."

It's Franklin University that owned Urbana U. U of Findlay has nothing to do with it.

For years I thought Findlay was just what you saw when passing through on I-75. However, it’s a cool little town when you get off the exit and check it out.

Interesting how different the perspective of Cincinnati life can be - my wife and I were born and raised in New York City - when we moved here we both were delighted that the pace of life had slowed to a crawl.

When I moved to San Diego 5 years ago and told people I was from Cincinnati, many native San Diegans assumed that I moved there for the change in the pace of life.

But interestingly, some people thought that San Diego was a fast-paced "big city" for a tractor-pulling Midwestern yokel (the type of folks who think everything from Scranton to Sacramento is flyover country). Other people assumed that the laid-back West-Coast was much slower-paced than the big-city East Coast that, naturally, is where everyone East of the Rockies comes from.

My personal opinion is that San Diego is a lot like Indianapolis and Columbus - a post-WW2 city with all the crime and traffic of the big city and none of the cultural attractions, diversity, or walkability that make urban life interesting.

Just goes to show that everything is relative.

I lived up near Balboa Park for a year. Liked San Diego until I got jumped and put in the hospital by getting hit in the side of the head with a brick on my mid day walk down the hill to the mall. Didn’t like it’s so much after that. Lol

That seems to be a Southern California thing after reading about all of the crap that happened at Dodger games.

Yeah, I didn’t even speak with to them and didn’t get robbed. Police said since I was white I should take public transportation rather than walk daytime or not. Lovely.

I prefer Deitsch's salt water taffy. A frequent stop on our commute between Minster and Ann Arbor.

Also a solid choice...I make a stop there whenever we have "@Findlay" on our Friday night schedule to stock up.

Getting on my first airplane since the quarantine this Wednesday. Headed to Florida to see Mom and spend some time at the beach.

I've been surprised at how many weird faces I've received when I mentioned air travel to friends and colleagues. People have even asked if I was going to quarantine myself for 14 days when I get back home......NO!

This article interviewing the former head of Epidemiology at The Rockefeller University's Center for Clinical and Translational Science captures my thoughts completely.

No thank you! More right wing non-sense. I can't believe how many people listen to the conspiracy junk pushed by the right. Why did this become political?

Stay home, stay safe, and wait for a medical solution is much smarter than letting everyone make selfish choices that hurts society.

My brother is a microbiology/immunology professor and also thinks we should open back up. He's a university professor, not a conspiracy theorist.

The reason it became political is that a bunch of governors and mayors who were all Democrats listened to the press corps (rather than to economists and immunologists) and decided to move the goalposts on the decision of when to reopen.

It became political when the right wing propaganda machine starting latching in to every contrarian position possible. First they downplayed the threat of the virus. Then when it broke out they claimed Trump was swift to action while the democrats were busy downplaying the threat. Now that the worst has (hopefully) passed, they're back to saying that it was no big deal and we should reopen.

And then, as if they needed more stupid talking points, they decided to tie themselves to Hydroxychloroquine as a treatment because Trump decided it was a miracle drug.

Hydroxychloroquine was one ridiculous political fight that most Americans (including scientists) stayed out of. Wasn't even a blip on most people's radars.

It was not political in January or even March. Both sides were downplaying the threat, not just Republicans. There's abundant evidence of that.

The fact is that today, most scientists are in favor of opening, and Democrats are not. That's why it's become political.

In short, it became overtly political when new & vastly improved data changed the scientific consensus on what to do. Rather than listening to the new scientific paradigm, a lot of Democratic governors decided to CYA with the media rather than admit their initial course of action was based on bad data.

When did new data change the consensus on what to do? That's not something that ever happened.
