The total is 16 games in the 10pm ET timeslot when you add BYU home games, which includes the Boise State @ BYU game. I also note that Air Force and SDSU were each in 3 of the MWC games that did not involve Boise or BYU (Nevada was actually in 4, no one else was in more than 2).
So, ESPN really only needs about 14 games to satisfy its late-night western inventory needs that it currently gets from the MWC. They could get that inventory from 3 western additions to the AAC and, under a pro rata increase of the current AAC TV deal, would need only about $20M per year to get it.
This is one of the points Ive made in the past. ESPN could save money by helping the AAC add three teams. If we were to take Air Force, Boise St and SDSU, that would be enough inventory out west to fill ESPNs needs and then they wouldnt have to even bid on teh MWC.
If they give the MWC $3 million each, it will cost them $36 million a year. They can add 3 teams to the AAC and pay $21 million.
In the end, I still think Air Force will be in the AAC by the end of 2021.
I find the hard on that many on this board have for Air Force amusing. If AF ever gets added to the AAC I will look forward to the posts of people complaining about having to play football and basketball games in Colorado Springs. There are few places more miserable to travel to in the fall and winter than Colorado Springs. All of the others are in the Mountain West. Trust me, the AAC would be best to add SDSU over AF. I have a lot of respect for the academy, but the travel to play FB and BB is the worst.
i prefer SDSU over AF also and san diego is in a major metro market that fits the profile that the american teams have.it will also add a good basketball team. the bad thing is that its a loner out there and we don't have enough money to add an additional 3 teams to make it work.
and if it were so that would actually be the AAC West and the current AAC West will be renamed AAC Central and the conference will really be American from coast to coast.
The only way SDSU makes sense at this point is if the AAC went to 14 or 16 addint 3 to 5 MW teams. ESPN might spring for the pro-rata increase for 3 MW teams (21 million). Thats 18 games from the 3 top MW draws. That probably gives ESPN all the western late night ESPN2/ESPNU content they really need.

Would a trio of BYU, Boise, and _____ (CSU, AF, SDSU) as all sports members in a 7 team west with Tulsa, Tulane, Houston, and SMU be a Power Conference as defined by major media and bowls?
If so, I think that is the only way BYU comes. Maybe ESPN makes it happen and in my dream world, they bump us by a few million/team/yr

I can't see the AAC presidents adding SDSU. A 'protecting our student athletes' sentimentality will be operative here.
I think we will stay at 11 or add 1, but not until the Big 12 renews its media contract (taking in to consideration what might all occur there).

Stay at 11, unless a member adds value almost immediately. AF, Boise or BYU.
The only one I see as a maybe is AF.

Air Force adds nothing. No value. No market. Nothing.
UNLV or Colorado State would be more of value than AF.
Aresco and the AAC has to think BIG if they wanna be recognized as a Power 6 conference. Otherwise stop using that term and accept the G5 status.

And I see the only logical way forward is to add ALL of those at the same time. If BYU wants to stay indi, then replace them with CSU. But adding 3 mountain time zone teams that are "relatively close" to each other added to the West Division, and move either Memphis or Tulane East, you create a more abrupt cliff between the P6 and the G4. Adding SDSU in the Pacific time zone is "a bridge too far" so to speak. I realize that SDSU is actually closer by about 40 miles to Memphis than Boise ID is, but it's the time zone that makes it more of a problem.

No---but in a 8 team playoff with a G5 slot---that 14-16 member AAC basically has an auto-bid for that G5 playoff slot. The AAC champ would have to be a 3 loss team to have much of any chance of losing the slot. The main reason would be the league would have such quality that the winner would almost always have to have several top 25 wins GARNERED DURING CONFERENCE play. NO other G5 is getting that schedule boost.

lol....how can you suggest adding bottom feeders like Colorado St and UNLV----and then have the gall to accuse anyone of thinking too small? Honestly---give me AF as a football only and VCU as a non-football member---and we are an all around better league than we are with UConn.

I disagree. Air Force is 10-2 in the MWC. They only lost to Navy by a few points, but they could have won.
Now, BYU and any MWC will turn down any invites from AAC. The teams that are strong right now are Appalachian State, Georgia Southern, James Madison, FAU or UAB which they all could fill in on the east and could fill in spaces over on the east side. The better basketball right now better than UConn is ODU. They are a program that could be on the rise in all sports.

I think CSU adds potential but not actual value. The American needs to add value. Stay at 11 until the Big 12 contract and the play off expansion crystallizes. At that point we will have a better idea of who has value and wants to be here. We are a league on the rise. Need to keep proving it on the field.
Go Memphis. Beat Penn State.

I think the AAC's first COA is to gage the interest of potential football affiliates (BYU, Army, Air Force and Boise St.). If that's not an option, then I could see the AAC pursuing an all-sports member, namely UAB (new facilities, location & market and history w/current members), or possibly one of Charlotte, ODU or the ultimate dark horse, Georgia State.

Whew! I thought I was the only one that understood that major point. Once you understand that, everything else is secondary. Even the Boise hate would have to be secondary to that. Once you see the future from that perspective it'll really help some people focus in on the few programs that actually make sense and it'll help some realize how far fetched others are. Just remember the p5 are starting to open up about an expanded playoff with a 5-1-2 format.

this requires that espn backs it up with $$$. currently our contract doesn't allow for the addition of 4 teams which sucks. i don't think espn is feeling that generous.
realistically we are looking at either one team in all sports or the split option.

If we go west, SDSU should be the first choice. Competitive, urban, easy travel - FB only unless existing members are compensated for travel.

First off we don't need 4 teams. With UCONN gone we would have to expand by 1 to get back to 12 or 3 to get to 14. If we expand by 1 it wouldn't cost ESPN a penny extra. If we were to expand by 3 .
If we got
BYU ---- that would be a revenue neutral addition because ESPN is already paying them
AAC type money
Boise--- ESPN would actually be saving money because they would no longer have to
For the entire mwc when all they really want is Boise.
SDSU---- pretty much the same situation as Boise to a lesser extent
The result is defacto power status for a "g5" auto-bid. Even if the powers don't just grant this its own auto-bid there wouldn't be any way a g4 could beat the AAC out because of the sos argument.
