Well, Sanchez certainly has a great approach to dealing with a missing closer tonight.

very well managed game by Martinez I think. Perfect hook for Sanchez.

Well this series is over. It's definitely the "B" series, but either way, it's over. Nats should be in a good position, as I imagine the Yankees and Astros will beat each other up and go at least 6.

Wonder what Scherzer thought watching tonight.

Amazing to hear this compared to earlier in this season (and last year) isn't it?

Yup, family should always come first.

Probably sitting in a dark room, rubbing his hands together and repeating "good, good..."

Cardinals are basically a very high floor/low ceiling team. Their SP throw strikes and the defense consistently turns batted balls into puts and the offense has very few black holes

Just so we’re clear: I agree. That was NOT a criticism - just an observation that an already shaky bullpen would be shakier.

Like it matters. The Cardinals can't hit at all. They only had 3 players with an OPS+ above 100:
Goldy 113
Wong 106
Ozuna 108

Not exactly murderer's row. The thing about the Cardinals is that other than Bader they don't have any bad hitters. They play great defense, have good SP and mostly have a solid pen.

I think your point here doesn’t diminish the importance of the Nats’ bullpen issues. Nats haven’t exactly been lighting up the scoreboard and low scoring games put a lot of pressure on late inning decision making. It’s a pretty big exaggeration to say that one of MLB’s worst bullpens wouldn’t be vulnerable to even a mediocre offense.

I think we realize that. Was just agreeing with hburg, not commenting on your comment.

Yes, but my point is that a bad offense means the Nats SP will be able to go more innings, thus minimizing the exposure of the Nats pen

Yeah when you can go from starter to closer- it totally changes the equation a lot on bullpen.

Also the Cards offensively aren't great with non fastballs. And with Strasburg and Corbin coming up- this could be a really fast series quite frankly....

saw David Freese is retiring. Man, he was a perfect bench bat for the Dodgers. He'll be tough to replace.

saw this-

if MLB did change the ball, I'm not a big fan of that(even if the Nats win it all).

He thought he was retiring after last season but they coaxed him to stay. Great guy - would probably make a very good coach.

Changing the ball midseason, if true, is a ******* joke.

the fact that MAT has the 1 run today is absolutely crazy for the Nats....

Are the Nats going to use anyone but Starters and Closers this series?

Wow that was nice....

Scherzer now with 1 run in his last 18 innings.... Yeah think he's back now. Next start in World Series? I'd take it.
