(08-15-2018 02:26 PM)ODU True Blue Wrote: Offense is very vanilla. Has been. We got by with better skilled players when we were FCS. At FBS all teams are bigger and faster, but we haven't seemed to improve the play calling. We can't WR screen the opposing defenses to death.
Also, remember, the D has seen this offence their entire careers. If we don't have outstanding players on offense the D should win head to head a lot.
We need a broader playbook than anything we've shown to date.
Our D should be OK against the run. I do not believe our LB corps is FBS quality. I hate playing 2 LBs. Horrible field coverage, and once you get pass the DL you have +6 years gains like crazy.
However, just like last year, if you can't stop teams from passing (and we were piss poor last year) teams will move the ball on us very easily. When we got a pass rush our passing D was not horrible. When we couldn't pressure the passer our defensive secondary got picked apart very easily. Yes, that happens to all teams. But I've watched this D for 9 seasons now, and we still cannot cover the field.
We need either better players or better coaches. Or maybe both.
I'm mostly concerned with converting on 3rd down for the offense and getting off the field on defense. If those improve we will win more games.

Is this due to inside information or from the camp reports on ODUsports? Today seemed like the defense was dominant, but every reports indicated the offense was doing pretty good. Of course, who knows how truthful those are.
I am concerned about the offense; mainly bc we have an 18 year old quarterback and I was disgusted by the WR play last year. There is more potential this year for that spot with Durhart coming back and the addition of Spencer/Mayo/Anthony.
I think the OL will be fine if Hendricks stays healthy. Weaver and Clarke are potential all conference players. THey also have a very difficult job trying to block the best defensive line in CUSA and maybe the best in G5.
Our offensive coaches have always done a really good job though. Last year was the only year our offense held us back and it was due to having the best QB be 17 years old. Pretty new concept of ODU having a better defense than offense.

That doesn't say much about our offense if our defense is beating them consistently.

Thanks for sharing what you've heard.
From my experience, every camp has its' ups and downs for each side of the ball. The O has a good day, coaches ream the D, make them run extra after practice and the D comes to life the next day. Then its' gets flopped.
Now, I'm not confident that's happening but I wouldn't make a judgement on a few practices either.

I would say its more common for the D to win early. There is a lot of timing involved on O and when you are going at real speed, things change. They have about 10 practices to figure it out!

My comment was an example of how momentum can swing back and forth through camp and practice in general. The timing of camp wasn't much of a consideration.

You'd have to check the conference bylaws, since they set the travel limit.

2015-2016
JJ. Travel Squad. Football travel squads shall be limited to 70 players for intra-Conference games. There shall be no limit for non-conference games. Duplicate jersey numbers are permitted for travel rosters as long as one of the duplicate numbers is used on a player playing offense and the other on a player playing defense.

Hearing from sources and seeing on video. Our DL is either incredibly improved and far better than last year which might be the case or our OL is not as good as advertised. The DL is kicking their asses so hence the comment regarding our OL.

Our Dl was one of the best at the G5 level last year and almost all of them are back. The DL is extremely good.
