RE: NEW stadium construction
That would be huge. As long as we're in line with the budget, what reason could they cite to block it?

Good news: initial construction on the new stadium is considered Phase 1. Pending additional funds, Phase 2 could increase seating, improve amenities, Etc.
Bad news: the unreleased state budget will not affect the quality of Phase 1. It will only affect whether or not we get two or three sides of the new stadium after this season.

Im a bit confused by this.
1. Are they referring to "Phase 1" as what was shown as "phase one" in the Populous drawings? If so, I'm ok with that. Besides, that seems to have some better amenities than we have now anyway.
2. What do they mean by "two or three sides" in phase two? It seems phase one will give us two new sides. So are they referring to the suites and upper deck in phase two as the "two sides" with the third being the end zone?
3. Lastly, you said "after this season". Does that mean we can expect phase 2 to begin in 2020?
Thanks for the info.

RE: NEW stadium construction
I didn't get into the weeds about what exactly Phase 1 entails. I was told that it would, at minimum, replace the East and West stands and significantly upgrade amenities. The state budget is a major player in all of this. I didn't get confirmation one way or another if the state budget could potentially increase the amount of money allocated for the stadium upgrade or if the state budget comes in significantly less than anticipated if resources earmarked for the stadium will have to be reallocated elsewhere.
I got the impression that if the state budget comes back where they expect it to, we'll get three sides of the stadium in Phase 1. Phase 2 will entail additional seating with a sizable upgrade in amenities. ODU Athletic Dept. and ODAF are hellbent to compete with the bigs when it comes to fit and finish of our facilities. We may never have the same square footage, but the quality of the facilities is impressive. To my knowledge Phase 2's start time is TBD. There's likely going to be another big donor push after Phase 1 is completed.
If you haven't already, I highly recommend taking a tour of the new basketball practice facility. It's REALLY nice.

I'm glad you like the new bball facility! I know the guy who worked on it at our firm and he put a lot of energy into that project.

I truly hope this is the case with the football stadium. I'm fine with a 20 something thousand seater, just make it the nicest one around. Im also excited that we may get a new end zone in phase 1. That thing is an eyesore and a full horseshoe would look so much nicer.

UVA, VT and JMU grads don't want to have to deal with another good program. They have graduates in the General Assembly.

I'm confused about what the state budget has to do with it? It's my understanding they don't contribute to the stadium., right?
If we're paying for it from contributions and student fees, how do they figure in? Do they issue bonds that we have to repay?

He's selling his house in East Beach, went to VMI and calls the eastern shore home.

And was one of the loudest voices against the ODU/EVMS merger when that was brought up in the legislature.

We are a state institution everything has to go through them for approval. Most things ODU related are pretty routine but $50+ million is enough they may actually take a look.

That has already been approved. If anything we might be looking at them approving an increase

We still have no idea what phase 1 will even look like. Is Ballard doing it? Is it going to look like the FAU stadium? Communication has been terrible this entire time.

If we get anything close to that good now I'll be thrilled.
I sure hope they do it right. If not, Wood and crew are going to feel the heat. The stadium needs to be regarded in the same high esteem as the Ted. If it has a bleacher feel after the renovation, then I think I’ll choose the comfort of my home to watch the games.
