RE: Weber State vs JMU
Weber State hasn't experienced anything like the speed and athleticism of our defense. They are going to look like deer in headlights during their first possession or two. We'll see if they adjust (read: step up) or if they die a painful Friday evening death like the Softies did a year ago. I know our guys are NOT going to take it easy on them. It's pedal to the metal from here on.

For 80’s Braves fans, Dale Murphy’s son is the nose tackle and he is very good with 14 tackles for loss. He is also 26 years old.
Weber State has at least 3 players that are 26 years old.
No wonder these guys won the Big Sky. They are grown men.
Is there no maximum age rule for the ncaa? I figured no. It’s more about four years of eligibility.
Yup just eligibility. SC St. had a 50 year old RB or something like that last year - more of a stunt but proves the rule. And with regard to Weber, I know it's been said but lots of their kids had served two years on Mormon missions in the middle of their careers like you often see with BYU and Utah is why they have so many older players.

RE: Weber State vs JMU
JMU wins this game 24-7 BUT ... the teams we are playing now are more complete. We cannot be one dimensional, putting so much pressure on our D. They are playing lights out which is great; possibly best D in FCS history. We would have had a shut out last week if Jimmy didn't slip (you are forgiven) We pressed them so much and blanketed their receivers that their QB who had thrown only 2-3 INT's all year had to try and force the ball all game, creating bad decisions and 5 picks!
The cold will not impact these guys from Utah like it did SHSU last year ... I still see us moving on and going all the way but we need to establish our running game. The more talented / balanced teams we are facing have better DB's and if we are relegated to only passing, it is a concern. SB chose to load the box to stop the run but some of these teams coming up might not need to commit so many assets to do so.
We find ways to win as a complete team but just saying ... I would like (need) to see some offensive dominance. To want to have the confidence we can kill the clock when needed, if for no other reason.

RE: Weber State vs JMU
We covered this a lot at the beginning of the season, but I feel like it's dropped off our radar once it improved...penalties:
First 5 games: 9.6/game (102.2/game)
Last 7 games: 5.3/game (49.3/game)
Almost half of the penalties and fewer than half the penalty yards after that first 5 games stretch. This can make a HUGE difference in some of these close games. I think it was a couple years ago (or maybe the beginning of last year) I tracked how many drives got killed on offense and extended on defense because of penalties. It can completely change the momentum of game.

Good stuff. It really makes me rewind back to the season opener. We were flagged for 14 penalties and 172 yards...8 of which gave EZU a first down. Yet, we still won by 20...perhaps should have been 27 if we had not given up that late meaningless TD with 23 seconds left. 14/172 kind of skews the numbers quite a bit, but your point is still valid. Offensively, we need to start moving forward more frequently and avoiding sacks/losses. Saturday against SBU, after a brilliant opening drive - definitely our most effective and efficient opening drive in a very long while - the next 2 possessions saw us lose yards on almost every play in immediate 3-and-out scenarios.

The Maine game wasn't bad, but 3 of the 4 after ECU were still 9/100, 10/85, and 10/89. Then they flipped it against Villanova and only had 2 for 10 yards. Since then the worst game was @Elon with 8 for 59.

Dec. 8, 2017 vs Weber State -- reported attendance = ???
If we get another 16K, I guess I'll be pleasantly surprised. Friday happens to be last day of Fall semester classes for students/faculty with final exams starting for some on Saturday, but for the masses on Monday. Hopefully, the students will show like they did for The Charmins last year. One week at a time...
Last year's second round game (our first game against UNH) had attendance of 13,231, so the increase from there to Soft Houston was about 18%. If we get another 18% bump this year we'd be over 19K.

RE: Weber State vs JMU
From the Weber boards:
Quote:I watched these guys play a few times. There is no reason to be intimidated at all. Their whole program and school is a bunch of soft primadonnas. Their conference is majorally overrated besides them and New Hamshire. If we play our best game and take a few chances at the right time, we will be in the game. Stoney Brook would have been in the game, if they didn’t shoot themselves in the foot. I’m a believer in this team. I’m not sure we’re going to win but there is no reason to feel like an underdog. If we play our best, we will win!

Not all are that bad, and most are good posts, but man...this person is great. JMU has won 24 straight, soundly beat NDSU in Fargo last season, have by far the best D in the country, are the defending NC...and still get called "soft primadonnas". The last time a Big Sky team won the NC is 2010 (which was the first time since 2001). Other than EW winning in 2010, the last team not in our 'majorally overrated' conference (JMU twice, UD once, Richmond once, Villanova once), named App St (3x), or named North Dakota St (5x) to win a NC was 2002.
But please remind me about your powerhouse program that has never won a quarterfinal game...

oh boy.
someone needs to point that guy in the direction of the SHSU and NDSU boards and see what they think.

OT for this thread but LOL at Kennesaw being a very slight favorite vs #6 Soft Houston. I am rooting for them because they are the only remote threat remaining on NDSU's side of the bracket. It's complete bull**** how they're at least 3 TD favorites against every remaining team. Quite possibly the saddest cake walk of a bracket in the history of the 24 team field.

I don't know...I don't think I'd want any part of Kennesaw State or Wofford....both run the triple option. NDSU might have their hands full.
Give me a more traditional team any day.
Also, tough to get a read on KSU...we don't really know what their ceiling is.

id be confident if we played the triple option - we have a coach that used to coach it!

JMU - 31
Weber State - 13
Miller may be out for us but we have other very capable receivers As I stated prior, one of their starting DBs had a BAD inside ankle sprain (saw a slow-mo replay) and he limped off the field which may knock him out for Friday Another DB was injured earlier as I recall so they may be playing with one or two 2nd team DBs back there.

Just for perspective...according to Massey rankings out of the top 10:
Our side of the bracket: #1, #3, #4, #5, #6, #7, #10
NDSU side of the bracket: #2, #8 (Kennesaw)
Not gonna lie...it'd be interesting if Kennesaw somehow pulled the upset and we got to go up against them in Frisco. Give Houston a couple week to teach the JMU defense how to break down a triple option. I honestly wouldn't be too worried about it. Our top defensive skills are speed and sticking to assignments. It'd be a great matchup. I feel like Houston would want to run a smashmouth offense in that situation so it'd be a grind-it-out game...terrible for the casual fan, but pretty fun for us.
