Old but interesting article. Lotsa "basketball schools" in this league... Maybe this place has potential. I won't give up on ya'll.

P.S. If I could be allowed to add Wichita State to that article: "Wichita State, undefeated in football since 1986... basketball school"

P.S.S. Dare I say Wichita State's addition breaks the stalemate and the AAC is once again a basketball conference? 02-13-banana

We are very much a football school. The shift started a few years ago.

Outlier.

Interesting. So if I'm really successful at one noble profession, I should drop it to practice another, even if I suck at it and continually embarrass myself because it has a higher income ceiling. Brilliant!

Don't quit your day job.

college basketbll was huge before the tourney came about

you think its the tourney thats saving college basketball but its the tourney that likely ruins it
anyone decent makes the tourney, losing individual games is meaningless,
if the tourney went to 4 teams and losing a single game eliminate you, the college basketball regular season would be 20x more popular

as for the players it plays into it aswell, but the new 1 and done phase is 8 years old, and going straight to the nba was only popular for about 10 years prior to that (college bball is 150yrs old)..but it does play into it, you arent given enough time to fall in love with stars (or hate them) so the story-lines arent as good

but i guarantee you in 4 years that rule will change, it will go to straight to the nba (bring it back) or 2 years of school minimum

I have no clue what you're saying but I wanted to save your comments for future reference in case I get bored. I like puzzles.

I literally do not see college football when I'm clicking on ESPN, SI, USA Today, etc. I know it exists, but I just don't see it. To me, college basketball is the show when it comes to college athletics. I know I'm biased as my school doesn't play football, but there are 1,105 DI-DIII college basketball programs in the U.S. Comparatively, there are 670 football programs. March Madness is literally a national holiday with brackets in every office in the country. During the month of March, lunch breaks push the envelope of job security.

Basketball has also exploded worldwide with innumerable professional leagues that pay their players quite well. We have countries you've barely heard of extremely competitive in Olympic basketball now. To say that basketball as a sport is much larger than American football would not be a stretch. I think it's no coincidence that AAC fans who say they don't care a bit about college basketball generally have poopy bball programs that haven't done much in the modern era. Hey, I'll admit that I don't follow football because my school doesn't play. Now you admit you don't follow basketball because your team doesn't play... very well.

This is a terrible argument. Football is king in America. Basketball might be bigger globally but so is soccer. So either move to a 3rd world country or deal with Football being king. Nothing beats saturdays in the fall!

MBB has gotten worse and worse btw. That is not just my opinion, one and dones (among other problems) have created a poor product.

2 wins, 1 year, since '71...

You guys are making my argument for me.

If ECU had won anything in basketball I still wouldn't pay much attention. I played football growing up and coached later. So my love of football started way before ECU came into my picture. Like I said, it's football season. Buckle up.

Even if USF made it to the final four last year, it still wouldn't change my order of interest. When USF was sucking ass in Fball I still couldn't wait for the next game. When our worst season ended I couldn't wait for September.

I feel bad for you. You have never experienced what makes football great. The euphoria of it. The incredible highs and the gut wrenching lows.

Basketball is great and all but there's a reason it takes the bronze in America.

Show me where I said "cbb sucks because we aren't good". You can't, because it ain't there.

College hoops sucks because the game itself is an ugly brand of basketball. Compared to the NBA it's slow, it doesn't flow, and most teams can't score.

Feel good, successful philanthropic career at a $30K salary vs a high-end real estate career, where one deal could make me six figures? To each their own, but I'm taking the real estate job every time. 07-coffee3

You're not listening well and you've left the reservation. Shall I build you a flowchart? I'll tell you what, I'll do better than that, I'll adapt my argument to your analogy modifying it just enough to regain the linear flow of the original argument and balance the variables appropriately.

Feel good, successful Internist earning $150K salary vs a high-end real estate career, where one deal could make six figures... only I've already been dabbling in the real estate biz for decades and have never sold more than one house in a single year.

Still wanna leave that medical gig? Think the Realtor job is gonna put more food on the table when it's all said and done?

4 national championships versus bupkis. If anybody in your athletic department even marginally emphasizes football over basketball they should be fired on the spot for suspicion of bad intentions. Even a child knows you play to your strengths.

UCONN plays basketball.

Some on this board would disagree with you. In fact, they would disagree so adamantly that they would suggest no discussion on the sport they dislike until the beginning of next year. I submit that most of those fans are unaware of what it's like to be relevant in the most popular indoor sport in the world.

I stand by my original statements. UCONN has a large, comprehensive athletics program. We offer almost twice as many sports as Wichita State. Basketball is our best sport, but we don't strive to be a one-trick pony. Not to mention, if college basketball was the be-all and end-all at UCONN, we would clearly be in the Big East right now.

True. But the trajectories for both are going opposite directions. Basketball will never catch football (duh), but football in general is going to take a beating.
