Our wonderful judicial system. Plea deals, credit for time served, etc.

Oh and the fact he's part of the 25% drop in federal gun charge cases under the Obama administration from the Bush administration.

I thought the black man never got out of jail and whitey keeps him in for even the most trivial crimes.

Finally a sentence that is fitting. This guy got a life sentence.

Shawn Custis, the suspect charged in the brutal home invasion and beating of a Millburn woman — a crime that sent shock waves through the quiet Essex County community — is no stranger to the criminal justice system.

Records show a career criminal who has avoided the toughest penalties most of his life by sticking mostly to home burglaries that carry little prison exposure — crimes that kept him never far from a favorable deal when caught, regardless of how often he was locked up.

Here's a detailed look at the long history of criminal charges faced by this repeat offender:

SHAWN CUSTIS' CRIMINAL RECORD

These are the dates attached to Shawn Custis' criminal file, the counties where the alleged crimes took place, the disposition and the term imposed.

Dec. 9, 1988*: Burlington - Burglary (4 years' probation)

Feb. 15, 1991*: Burlington - Unlawful possession of a handgun (5 years' probation)

Dec. 18, 1992*: Camden - Burglary (4 years' probation)

Jan. 15, 1993*: Burlington - Robbery and assault (10 years in jail)

Feb. 10, 1998: Paroled

April 22, 1998: Violated parole, returned to prison

Aug. 28, 1998: Released from jail

Jan. 14, 2000*: Camden - Resisting arrest/eluding police (9 years in jail)

April 14, 2000*: Burlington - Theft (5 years in jail)

May 14, 2000*: Gloucester - Burglary (5 years in jail)

Jan. 30, 2003: Paroled

July. 8, 2003: Violated parole and is sent back to prison

Feb. 27, 2004: Paroled

Sept. 22, 2004: Violated parole, sent to county jail

Aug. 26, 2005*: Union - Forgery (4 years in jail)

April 26, 2006: Sent to halfway house

July 10, 2006: Escaped from halfway house

Aug. 8, 2006: Union: Returned to prison

March 31, 2008: Released from prison

June 14, 2010*: Essex - Burglary (5 years' probation)

June 18, 2010*: Union - Burglary (5 years' probation)

April 1, 2011*: Burlington, Essex, Mercer, Middlesex - Burglary (3 years in jail)

Dec. 22, 2012: Released from prison

June 21, 2013: Essex - Charged in Millburn home invasion; incident captured on nanny cam
http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2013/07...ustis.html

Put another way, Custis has been convicted of at least a dozen felonies since 1988. Yet he has never spent more than five years at any one stretch in state prison, according to state corrections department records. Most times — with parole — he’s been out in less than two. And in some cases, he did no jail time at all.

A new and detailed review of Custis’ criminal past reveals a man with a penchant for violence, an appetite for drugs, and a willingness to kick down someone’s door for nothing more than whatever cash and jewelry he could stuff into his pockets or carry under his arm. Those records show a career criminal who has avoided the toughest penalties most of his life by sticking mostly to home burglaries that carry little prison exposure — crimes that kept him never far from a favorable deal when caught, regardless of how often he was locked up.

But I admit it... when I see a long criminal history, it lessens my sympathy. Especially if I see domestic violence on their rap sheet. Maybe that's wrong and I should still fully grieve a life taken, but I can't help be influenced by a history cluttered with bad-guy behavior that's made his neighborhood less safe.

Not saying he deserved it. But I am saying that this never should've happened because he should've been in jail. I mean seriously.....how do you get arrested that often (and a previous resisting arrest) and keep getting out?

Oh I know, I didn't mean to imply you said he deserved it.

I'll say it. He deserved it. With a rap sheet that long including domestic abuse and molestation, he has no business on the streets. If off the street is 6 feet under, so be it.

Whether or not he deserved it doesn't matter.

If he did all of those things and still resisted arrest he had it coming. This is what happens when you have no respect for authority. Is it really worth the gamble? Sorry, no sympathy here.

Sympathy has nothing to do with whether or not it was a good shoot. We don't have a law that gives police the ability to become the hangman for disrepute.

RE: Alton Sterling Shooting
The thing about Shawn Custis is that his dumbassery is what has finally put his butt in jail for good. He was given a 20 year plea deal, in which he was likely to be paroled prior to that. (17 years or so)

He didnt want that. He wanted a jury trial.

The judge warned him that, due to his past convictions that if he is convicted, he could end up serving a sh*tload more time.

He wasnt convicted of attempted murder, but his conviction of assault and the other counts allowed the judge to sentence him to life plus 5 years. He will be eligible for parole in 63 years and 9 months.

Sometimes you just got to allow the dumbasses to hang themselves.

I believe the second video shows that there was a gun as the second officer removed it from the right lower cargo pants pocket after Sterling was killed. I'm still not sure whether Sterling was reaching/able to make a threatening move toward the gun in the position that the officer had him in. I guess time will tell.

I, personally, have seen more incriminating videos than this guy. He was wrestling with the police while he had a gun. No jury is going to convict those cops of anything and in my opinion they shouldn't. The guy was resisting arrest. You take your life into your hands when you do that. The one video a year ago when the guy was wanted for child support and was shot in the back 7 times. That was bs. This. Tragic, but the cops were in the right. Obey the law. Obey commands. Live. Rule 1 A to live. Don't wrestle with cops with a gun in your pocket.

Sure we do. If he thought this guy was going for a gun...

Then that would make it a good shoot and has nothing to do with whether he deserved it because of his past, resisted arrest, or lack of respect for authority.

There's a difference between deserving (basically having your death justified by just existing) and a good shoot (protecting yourself and others by taking him out). A good shot is taken as a last resort. I wonder if all other options were exhausted before the shots were fired.

Now I'm one of those people who think that he should be under the jail for the sheer amount of his convictions. Hell, I even think his area is safer without him in it. I think that his whole life had lead him to that point. But none of that says that he deserved to be shot. Only if he were going for the gun would this be a good shoot.

Just because there is a gun in the pocket, doesn't mean that they should automatically shoot. It's if he really was reaching for it and the cops had no other way to stop it.

True. We will find out much about what happened prior to taser deployment and what prompted that the entire encounter prior to the video being engaged.

If you are resisting arrest, have a gun in your pocket illegally, The police have identified the existence of the gun during the resisted arrest, and you have made any movement towards that pocket, its a clean shoot. 100% of the time. Don't have to like it but there it is.

I agree. If there was an indication he was reaching for his pocket then the cops had little choice.

Despite what you may see on COPS, Tasers don't necessarily make you docile. When I was in C school we had an instructor who told us that tasers are less than 70% effective on the first try. Probe placement is a variable. They also sometimes work so that you stiffen up, which has been mistaken has resisting.

I agree and this is the crux and it's also what we don't know.

I wish we had more footage because the immediate reaction of the other cops would tell the story.

I've been tased before during training, so know tasers dont necessarily make you docile, specially if you are under the influence of drugs.

if the guy had stiffen up, why was he still moving his arm towards his waistband? 07-coffee3

I didn't say he did stiffen up. I just said it happens. Also do we know that his hand moved toward his waistband?
