Are we going with white as our primary helmet this year? I thought the all white uniform we wore against UT looked sharp.

I liked it too. I wish we'd wear solid white on the road and solid blue at home, even a blue face mask.

When I was playing, our throwback uniforms were some of the team's favorite ones. Primarily the helmet: blue helmet, grey stripe down the middle, grey number, and grey face-mask. I think we wore them for a few weeks in a row in the fall of '12.

Why don't we have a grey alternate uniform? Or at least grey jerseys or pants. I think that'd look great too.

Those were really nice looking helmets. I always wondered how well that helmet would have looked if the number was replaced with the OER. The blue pants with the thin white stripe was also a classic look. You can see the helmets that RiceOwl53 is referring to in this video...just don't watch the end.

Looks like a lot of mud slid down to cover over the tarped areas, especially on the sides. Hope ya'll are okay over there.

Oh wow, it's really coming down again in Houston right now, from the webcam view.

Wish we could etch some 'owl eyes' into the glass... or use some clever lighting to create the illusion of eyes and a beak

I don't want to stir up the whole 'gold is not our color' thing again, but I think it would be cool... and a conversation piece for visitors to the stadium

It would look great.
If you mean 'owl eyes' as a large, single image, etching the pattern directly would make future maintenance expensive. Some of the windows would have unique etching, so that replacement with a plain window would break up the image.

Laser light projector, similar to the one used during the Centennial?

What happens to eyes that may be on the receiving end of those lasers, on the other side of the windows?

Projectors like the centennial. I always figured that wouldn't be too hard for an intro but we don't really play night games. No one should be in there during games anyway so I wouldn't worry about shining through the glass.

Now for basketball where you can dim the lights and project onto the court I think it's something we should definitely explore. That would really make our production value go up in my opinion. They did it for the Final Four and it looked awesome.

You're right on the etching... but if it were necessary for the illusion, I think I'd do it. I really wouldn't think those windows would break often.

but yes, I think lights/lasers would be better.

They might be able to do two versions. One, a 'low level' light that would be as much shadows as anything else... on every night... make a cool fly-over and picture. The other might be more like the Centennial, used for intros and perhaps scores?

Maybe someone could design an Owl (slightly oversized, but not comical) drone to fly around before and after games or after scores with an owl screech? Could also be used at other events....

I also imagine a chant of GOOOOOOOOOOWL!! when the Futballers score.

Gotta get more creative with the event planning

With all the recent rains, not much progress on the exterior, but it does look like they have the scaffolding set up to cover over the back right building in the white shown in the renders. Not sure if that's just a white stucco type covering or some kind of light colored block.

A real owl at all the home games would be great. They stopped doing that in the 80's and I don't know why. The handler could walk the bird around the concourses for the fans to see. Some birds are trained to do things like fly circles. Having one fly around the stadium after touchdowns, or as the team takes the field would be so cool. I saw one at Dickens on the Strand in Galveston two years ago. That owl would do anything for food. It was really impressive.

And as a lagniappe, a live owl might solve the rat problem. I speak of both the flying and scampering species.

A cajun word for 'a little bit extra, thrown in, no charge'.

I've heard (before my time) that students used to take care of the owls and several of them died (Racoon got into the cage?). Definitely not allowed these days. You have to have a raptor license and I don't think we have a department that would fall into. The zoo is across the street though and they house Shasta for UH. I always wondered why we didn't have a Sammy over there that could be transported to Rice on game days... The cost would be minimal and they could call it public education. Several big Rice donors contributed to the new gorilla enclosure... Maybe they could add a "Parliament" at the zoo...

The owl cage was in Lovett quad when I was at Rice. Two great horned owls. We really should get this back even if they are housed at the zoo.

Without a doubt.

Wild raptor handlers are required by law to only show the birds for "educational" purposes. Air Force brought their falcon back in 1996 at an Operation Sellout game. Right before the game, the handler gave a quick show with the bird on the 50. It was great.

I'm sure it would be very easy to contract with a bird handler to bring an owl to Rice Stadium. Those guys love showing their birds. It would add a lot to the gameday environment.

To be clear we have done this within the last couple years. I was hoping for a more permanent fixture though.
