RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
I may be in the minority here but I think this is the right move. TV exposure is great and all, but for me, I dont want to see another 80-20 beatdown ever again. There is no advantage to our football program to have another game even similar to the UNC game on national TV. As a fan, it is very tempting though. Of course I think we all want to see our team playing the best teams on ESPN but it is important to weigh the "what do we want to do" versus the "what should we do". Our administration has said since day one that we dont need the money so bad that we will schedule these types of games and if we dont need it, then I dont think we need to start scheduling them yet. Maybe after a few years and we know exactly where our team is on the field.

Agree with the administration. We're not there yet and don't need the cash.

RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
Actually it would have been pretty cool to go down and see the Bear's House and be on national televison. I am also not so sure that, in truth, we could not use that kind of $$$ either - not to mention ESPN owing us a favor. Alas, all that being said I agree it was the right decision to say no. I was at the UNC game and while I would hope Alabama would not have been a repeat of that nightmare I would not want to risk it. So for now Roll On Tide and the Big Blue Wave will catch you another day. 04-cheers

If they want us on the schedule next year I say we jump at it.

Nice post. I agree. Alabama will be there in years to come and we will get many more shots at national TV exposure as well, besides we don't want another "Charlotte incident' do we?

I am well aware of the negatives, but 1.3 MILLION is a lot of money!

Not really once you think about it. Vanderbilt will be giving us 1 million next year. Playing Alabama on the national stage for 1.3 isnt worth it.

Who would have thought that we would even be discussing the merits of accepting an offer to play Alabama in 2015? What an exciting time for ODU athletics in general and football in particular.

Now that I have that out of the way, I do agree with Selig's decision. Let's concentrate on C-USA for a while before taking on the Tide.

RE: ODU Football Future OOC Schedules
I think the UNC game has puckered everyone involved with the football program. That embarrassment can never be allowed to happen again. However, that was a product of a scheduling mistake more than anything else. We never should've scheduled that game for late November, when our depth chart was almost non-existent. If that game (and possibly the Alabama game) were played early in the season, I think we would be significantly more competitive.

That said, I agree with the admin's decision here. Not for fear of a beat down. Rather, for the development of a functional defense. That has to be the top priority for this program in order to grow. Playing the SEC's best wouldn't help achieve that development. We need a few years to nurture the defense along.

It would be 1.3 million minus whatever payout we would need to break contract and cancel a game vs. a team we already scheduled. With only a few months notice, I don't think it's the right move. (and something alot of us were upset about with Charlotte)

we would not be competitive with Alabama. .... not for 1 second. we have recruited 2 top 100 classes (maybe) they have recruited top 5 ten years in a row.

2015 IS next year. Or did you mean this upcoming season, with Heinicke?

We'll be breaking in a new QB in 2015, I'm not really anxious to send them out there against Alabama.

Let's just wait til we get them in a National Championship Game.

Argh, wording. Meant the following, not next. So 2016. Or any of the dates we have available.

We have a ways to go before we should take on Alabama. Mabey 3-4 years from now would be good.

FYI... Breon Key has been practicing with the football team at Hampton University. He had an interception this past weekend during team drills at Defensive Back. He should be back on Hampton Blvd. when the Pirates come to visit on August 30th.

Just like the post in Basketball Recruits about Jason Pimentel committing to Longwood, good for Breon. I am glad things are working out well for him at Hampton and I look forward to seeing what he can do on the football field. I watched him play in a Hampton MEAC game on TV this year. I am sorry things didn't work out at ODU for both young men. Best of luck and much success, well maybe not SO much when they play ODU!

ODU's first FBS home schedule. That is truly a thing of beauty!
