Things were broken and needed repair. No staff is ever going to be perfect, but in this instance, it's the right move. Look for guys with high ceilings now during our transition years so that we can perform at the highest level when we're full FBS. Cut the guys who don't work out and upgrade.

First, we had plenty of winners on the former staff. Some were NC winners. Second, we had a couple sniffs at the playoffs. Stony Brook came in and steam rolled us until we woke up too late. I really don't care about that. It was time for a change, but most of these guys had very little responsibility for OSU or other programs winning anything.

Why wouldn't you question such unproven coaches almost across the board? You'd be stupid not to. I hope they do great. I hope we go undefeated and win the NC. I'm not rootin any less, I'm just a little concerned with so many guys on a staff with responsibilities they've never had before. Being hungry and smart doesn't make you a good dancer the first time you get out there on the floor.

Not me - I want next season to be our 1st transition year. But if you're happy in I-AA....03-razz

Which leads to this....

If we have coaches that don't cut it, they'll be gone. We will by then have started to increase the assistant coach budget to I-A levels - which will increase the candidate pool.

Newsome and O Cain were at tech when Withers was DC and head coach and UNC couldn't beat them. I think Hanson has a championship ring from Richmond and some quality ACC wins under his belt. The rest if the staff rarely coached a game below .500 since 2004. I don't equate Urban Meyers success withe Withers , Urban did it for a long time without him. No one else on this staff has a 1-aa nc or BCS NC.

And the ceiling is high when you just starting your coaching career for the few on the staff.

Yeah, saying the past assistants weren't winners is pretty dumb unless referring only to this past season..

go dukes

Since you asked, I will tell you what somebody else would have done. As I did in a post earlier in this thread- It doesn't matter now who another candidate would have hired. I just posted the truth about three guys who would have been a thousand times better hires than this pitiful staff that Everett has brought to Harrisonburg. This feels like Mike London all over again (dumb ass UVA admins= $6million buyout)... A nice guy who is in way over his head. Call me what you want to and I don't care. I will have the last laugh, "BOOK It"

Can you believe it! Redskins new coach promotes a young position coach to Offensive Coordinator. Unbelievable!

[i][b]The Redskins promoted tight ends coach Sean McVay to offensive coordinator. The 27-year old McVay is one of the brightest young coaches in the game. The first day I met him, in July 2010, I thought he was incredibly mature and confident for a young man. He has blossomed right before everyone's eyes. McVay has universal respect from the tight-ends and that should largely translate to the entire offensive room

McVay told Doc Walker, Brian Mitchell and Scott Jackson that Jay Gruden will build his offense around the talents and skill set of the offensive pieces that he has in place, instead of forcing a system down the throat of the talent.

He has been coaching pro football for seven years. And he will be a coordinator of a specialty that Jay Gruden was hired for .........offense.

What have all these experienced "winners" got us the past 5 years? Mediocre FCS football.

I support Withers and his staff choices 100%. Excited to see young, hungry coaches bring some energy into a program that needs it.

Right now, our coaching hires should be like investing for your retirement when you're 25--high risk, high return. We don't need people who have plateaued or who are on the downside of their career. This is about building a program that can bring excitement to the burg and win games 4-5 years from now. These next 2 years are just a time to see what works best for
The team.

When Mike O'Cain first got hired this board was nothing but complaining about his mediocre history. Now it's like we just let the Nick Saban of offense leave.

Football is 90% about the Jimmy's and Joe's and fundamentals.

+1 Lets give them a chance and see what they're capable of. If they aren't successful, then that is on Withers, but lets give them a chance and see what they can do.

Or perhaps he's working with a budget. Time will tell. Look, I'm really not complaining. We'll see how it goes. The players will know immediately whether these guys know their stuff. I'm hopeful that they'll be great, but ideally I would have liked them to have been in the ring before. BTW, I may have missed it but have we hired a new strength and conditioning coach yet? When I saw they let go of the current guy (honestly don't recall his name) I figured Withers had someone in mind to bring in quickly and get on top of the offseason program. I think that's a pretty important job.

Other than Curt Newsome, have any of our prior coaches been hired anywhere yet? I know some said that Clayton was following Newsome to Emory & Henry but he hasn't mentioned it anywhere on Twitter.

Edmonds was hired by ODU. Not really sure about anyone else.
