MM has left Withers more talent to work with than Alex Wood left MM to work with in 99', and JMU managed to go 8-3/7-1 that season. There is enough talent for Withers to work with to go 8-3/6-2. Make that 9-3/6-2 with the extra OOC game.
That's not what MM said at the time. He earned his Mouth of the South reputation out of the gate that year when he said he couldn't understand how Wood didn't win with the talent on that team, and that they would make the playoffs that year.
And in comparison to the level of talent in the CAA today, MM has NOT left Withers the same kind of talent he inherited in 1999. On what would you base that statement?
Yea. Who is the Keaton on this team?

I watched both the 98' team which finished 3-8 in Wood's last season, and 13' team, MM's last season. The 98' team had the best player that would be returning the following season, Keaton. Across the board the 13' team had more talent hands down.
Anyone who watched both teams will see that the 14' team, Wither's 1st season, will have more talent than the 99' team, MM's 1st season.
Sure the CAA is better that it was in 99', but JMU has 8-3, 9-3/6-2 talent, same as they've had each of the previous 4 underachieving seasons 10'-13'. (I'm willing to cut the 09' a break, as they'd lost about about half the starters from 08', and another about 1/2 doz off the 2 deep, due to graduation, medical, academic, and off the field issues. Heaviest offseason losses in over a decade.) For next season the only teams who are in the same ballpark talent wise as JMU are VU, UD, and maybe TU (they lose something like 14 of 22 starters, including West).

RE: Withers' Staff
TU graduated four o lineman, their TE, QB and West is leaving early. All totaled, 8 offensive starters will not be with the team next year. I would think the cupboard is definitely bare at TU on offense.
JMU has Birdson, Abdullah, three starters on the o line with Lane coming back off injury. We had 50 wide receivers since that is a position Mickey's staff recruited heavily so I am not worried there. Defensively, we lost Robertson a couple of d lineman and no one of value in the secondary who routinely gave up first downs and touchdowns all season.
Wither's has a very good nucleus to work with. He needs to recruit well out of the gate but it sounds like he is. If he can fill in some gaps, JMU should be very competitive next year.
