I'll say this about this rather insane (IMO) debate about telling someone they are being intentionally dense - this is NOT new for this board.

Huh? I don't understand the bolded. What does mentally challenged have to do with it?

Good thing you didn't call someone a moron - the histrionics would have likely caused the hosting website's server to meltdown!

05-stirthepot

dense = slow, retarded, mentally challenged. try to picture in your mind somebody who is actually dense, as opposed to intentionally dense.

And calling someone a moron isn't at least equally as lowbrow as what you're saying 93 did?

What do you think about someone calling another person on this board a moron?

I mean, that's a totally hypothetical situation and not one that actually occurred recently...

What did 93 do? I thought he said to Tanq, "you are being dense", which I think implies being intentionally dense, since it is clear Tanq is not dense. But let's hear your take on what the argument is all about.

I learned over 65 years ago not to use the word "moron", from my mother. she said it was impolite. There was a genre of joke popular back then call "little moron' jokes. Ten years after that, we called the same jokes "Aggie" jokes.

In any case, calling somebody dense is, IMO, offensive. Notice the I, and the M, and especially the O? But I can see where the usage would be attractive in these discussions here on the Quad. It's the reason we have the 03-banghead emoji. which I am tempted to use right now.

I think I shall go back to watching the density fights rather than being a participant.

It's definitely not nice to call someone dense or saying they're being intentionally dense - but it's not an uncommon occurrence here, unfortunately. I think it's not uncommon because most view it as a temporary state of someone in an argument - akin to calling them stubborn or dug in. But that's my opinion on it, and why I'm much less offended by that slander than one attacking someone's inherent intelligence.

I don't think it's the same level of insult as calling someone on this board a moron, but that was just the kind of attack levied by another poster recently (which maybe you missed, and why you didn't get my stirring the pot comment).

It is uncalled for. Iirc that was used once, to which you complained about 4-5 times (I guess now 6 or 7 with the two last references to it in the last hour....).

And, iirc, it wasnt repeated.

And, I seem to remember you calling me 'intentionally dense' two or three times. I think I have told you multiple times to go eff yourself over it. Perhaps you have noted OO as the same a time or two --- I dont recall. And Im not counting the times you have rendered the word 'obtuse', or something equivalent to 'isnt it cute when smart people speak stupid' on one or more occasions.

And, I would equate 'moron' and any form of 'dense' as equivalent. They refer to the same thing, mind you.

If one is commenting on a dug in position, just say they are dug in. When one devolves to commenting on mental faculty, that is a shortcut slur.

And funnily, havent called anyone 'dense', or a 'moron' -- that is except using the term for myself in the direct aftermath of lad using the term or terms on me.

As for your use of "moron" -that word once had a definition, in terms of IQ. Are you saying that you would call a moron a moron to his face? I did not you to be that uncaring.

moron

careful with the word 'retarded' --- some like to jump and chastise use of that. some get uppity and (horrors) neg rep for that. By the way, note the 'quotes' to delineate that as a word and not using it as a thing. Sometimes people dont clue in to that.
Can't we all just get along?
Chiming in even though I probably shouldn't...

In my mind here's what the phrases mean:

"You are dense." That's a comment on my mental ability. Surely not meant literally, but definitely as an insult. Not as bad as calling me a name like moron, idiot, or imbecile in my book, hard to explain the difference but too me it's an emotional one; those terms carry more punch. Dick, a**hole, and f**kwad would be even worse.

"You are being intentionally dense." You're not calling me stupid, you are saying that I'm playing dumb, pretending not to see things that are obvious. I honestly don't see this as an insult but rather a calling-out of a particular strategy.

So here's what I see - maybe all involved can agree to this?

Lad or 93 (who are of course the same person) thought that Tanq or #s or OO (who are also the same person) was not being honest about how he interpreted something. Instead of saying "I think you're choosing the least charitable interpretation of my words," he said THE PHRASE. Because the phrase included the word "dense," the red-team* recipient felt personally insulted. Words in a non-academic context can do that - they carry emotional meaning beyond that of their intended use and move outside the confines of their sentence. While we can attempt to parse the intended and received meanings analytically, it appears that it's too late for that and no detente is achievable. The amygdala has taken control from the cerebral cortex.

Or maybe I should just shut up.

*I'm aware that at least one of you did not consider yourself to be a Republican or conservative or something like that. I use "red-team" as a spend to differentiate Tanq/OO/#s from Lad/93, not to assign actual identity. I also don't think anyone here roots for UH.

One difference -- there really is no effective distinction between calling one 'intentionally dense (obtuse, etc)' and calling one 'ignorant', except perhaps the explicit 'intentional' aspect.

It could have happened that the poster started out on the 'lets agree to disagree'. That wasnt the case. Even after prompting to that tact. And after prompting that he was hopping straight into the ad hom realm. And then after some nifty dancing footwork about the inclusion of the the magic words of 'I believe you are' as some panacea to that -- which is a complete garbage time excuse.

I agree too. If you are fine with this I wonder why you went completely ape over my differentiating between "I think you are dense." and "I think that you are being intentionally dense." He is making the same point that I have been trying to make with OO and you to no avail.

Quote:One difference -- there really is no effective distinction between calling one 'intentionally dense (obtuse, etc)' and calling one 'ignorant', except perhaps the explicit 'intentional' aspect.

To the bolded... of course the "intentional" is the key here. That is what I have been saying and I am worried that I may be on the verge of asking you again if you are being intentionally dense here.

Quote:It could have happened that the poster started out on the 'lets agree to disagree'. That wasnt the case. Even after prompting to that tact. And after prompting that he was hopping straight into the ad hom realm. And then after some nifty dancing footwork about the inclusion of the the magic words of 'I believe you are' as some panacea to that -- which is a complete garbage time excuse.

NO!!! Come on, Tanq. The magic word here is "intentionally". THAT'S WHAT I HAVE BEEN SAYING differentiates this from an actual ad hom and it's nice to see that at least one person on this board agrees with me here.

I guess you forgot this, sparky:

Quote:OMG don't be so dense.

Funny that. After all your fing yelping about how you would *never* lay down any ad hom....

And yes, 'intentionally dense' is an insult as well. That is except in sparky's 'sparky can never do or say anything wrong world of magic.'

That is, from preacher of all civil in the the world, life, and everything.

Again, perhaps you should have *started* with 'lets agree to disagree' -- that is as opposed to coming right off the bat in arrogant asshat mode in at least three different instances.

In fact I noted that perhaps you should have started that way before acting like an arrogant prick in the run yesterday morning. Your response was to simply get mealy mouthed with me, stating essentially how dare I denote that. Funny that.
