CDC new numbers on mortality rate. .26

That’s right, .26% of the people that have COVID-19 die, that is roughly 2.5 times that of the flu. 50% of the people that have had COVID never knew they had it. Over the next month, as more medical knowledge is made, the death rate will continue to decrease. It’s time to stop being scared of your shadow, it’s time to stop destroying people’s ability to earn a living, time to stop destroying the psyche of the American people and people around the world.

There is no stopping it, right now. Working on a vaccine to an engineered virus is not easy. Outside of a controlled environment no one knows How quickly it can or will mutate in a human host.

I almost never where a mask, unless the business that I am dealing with requires one in order for me to receive their services. I’m also pretty obsessive about hygiene and being respectful of other people and their personal space. It is not an individuals responsibility to ensure another persons well being, unless you are their parent.

If you meet the conditions that raise your risk level, take the proper precautions and protect yourself. It’s not your neighbors job to protect you. Also the CDC is clueless when it comes to an actual number of infections. They have acknowledged that there may be 8-10 times the infections that what is reported. This virus sucks and is deadly to a certain demographic, no one should deny that, but shutting down the entire country has become political grandstanding.

People die every single day. Nothing will change that. Everyone who died from COVID would die from something in the future no matter what. To quote Jeff Goldblum “Nature will always find a way”. Fight the virus with science and meds, while allowing people to go back to work and jump start the economy. Quarantine is doing way more global harm long term than this virus will in the short term.

I do not agree. My wife is immunocompromisied. We stay in more than most and go out as needed only. but the fact is we do have to go out. We have to get groceries and other essentials. I do not think another shut down should occur but it is not much to ask that masks and distancing be required in businesses. Thankfully, Houston is requiring this. We should all look out for each other and this helps those that can truely be harmed by this stay protected.

Also it is callous to say "people die". Cool 9/11 doesn't matter because they will die someday. School shootings, why stop stop them, those kids will die someday.

I don’t know what you did after 9/11, but I went to war twice. As far as your first paragraph, government shouldn’t mandate anything that imposed on its people. The government should place guidelines for people and it should be up to businesses to decide whether or not to implement them.

54,000 deaths have been in nursing homes. Had New York, Pennsylvania, Michigan, California and New Jersey protected the elderly rather than using nursing homes as overflow we wouldn’t have lost 20,000 just from those states alone.

This virus is truly only dangerous to small percentage of the population.

This thing would be nothing if it wasn't so darn contagious. It can make so many people sick, so fast that it can overrun hospital systems if it gets into the wrong place

I can see big cities needing to be careful. Houston and Phoenix are having issues. Too many people living on top of each other.

Phoenix and Houston have relatively low population densities for cities their size. The population density of Phoenix is only slightly higher than that of Charlotte's while having nearly double population. The valley is a very spread out place.

With that being said, our ICU bed use is still above 85% after appearing to crest at 88% a week ago.

Our problem isn't that we live on top of each other, like NYC, it's a genuine lack of giving a **** about trying to contain this thing. When our SAH order expired on May 15th we didn't slowly transition to a calculated and phased re-opening. The governor outlined those phases but never enacted them and allowed the state to completely re-open almost immediately.

He finally came to his senses and closed all bars/nightclubs, theaters and water parks for at least 30 days beginning yesterday.

Your ignoring studies that are finding long-term lung damage, brain damage/cognitive impairment, and chronic fatigue in recovered patients. Thing is, we really don't know the extent of long-term consequences of this illness. Never heard of the flu causing brain damage or other long lasting effects. Even if my chances of dying were only .26% (I assume they are significantly higher because of my age) I really rather not get the coronavirus. I wasn't all that worried about by kids (in their young 30's) getting it, but with the possible long-term effects I am currently more concerned. Just saw where Rudy Gobert (1st NBA player to get it) still hasn't regained his sense of smell. Not the worst thing that can happen to somebody, but just an example of how this thing can mess you up for an extended time.

I also saw where the governor of Texas was talking about an increase in the numbers on younger people being infected. Whether that is due to them being less careful or that they are seeing yet another mutation of this crap, who knows? Simply put, no one is "safe" from this stuff.

First player to be diagnosed. There is a difference. Who knows who may of had it before and just never showed any symptoms.
What were utilization rates this week in 2019?
COVID 19 by the numbers.

- 46.7k/112k deaths were in New York & New Jersey

- 103k/112k deaths from age 55+

- 8k deaths are Between the ages of 35-54

- 941 deaths TOTAL from age 0-34

Roughly $37,000 in government funding per COVID patient.
Countries in EU and Asia: Set up frequent checkpoints & roadblocks, mandatory temperature scans, isolate the sick from the general public, send government agents to residences of those infected to help set up provisional quarantines and keep watchful eyes on everyone that person might had contact with, GPS tracking system that sends proximity alerts on our devices whenever sick ppl are nearby so the especially vulnerable individuals can know when to take extra precautions or avoid a certain place entirely, free healthcare associated with the covid virus, etc. People willingly accept these temporary restrictions for the greater good.

The attitude of people in U.S. (especially in the South): : "We do what we want. Not my problem"

There are other 1st world nations beating this thing without shutting down everything. Not claiming to be a doctor, but I do understand that wearing even a $10 mask and washing hands should be the absolute minimum, yet we're still stuck debating about the validity of wearing masks 6 months after the outbreak. Im disappointed and baffled really.. /rant

I suppose that you can find data to support most any position. That said, COVID is actually far more deadly than the flu.

0.1% of people who got the flu died in the U.S, last year, according to The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The COVID 19 death rate is currently 5.2% . .. that makes the COVID 19 average death rate 52 times higher than that of the flu.

So wear a mask, wash your hands, social distance. If not for yourself, than perhaps for someone YOU may happen to love.
The true mortality rate is much closer to under .26-2% than the simple method of Dividing known deaths by known cases to date of 5+%. Spreading numbers like 5% is disingenuous. Wore my mask yesterday and will do so again today.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nco...arios.html

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoda...5269331002

The document includes five scenarios. The first four are varying estimates of the disease's severity, from low to high, while the fifth represents the "current best estimate."

The range of estimates put the fatality rate for those showing symptoms between 0.2%-1%, with a "best estimate" of 0.4%.

It also places the number of asymptomatic cases between 20%-50%, with a "best estimate" of 35%.

By combining the two estimates, the estimated overall fatality rate of those infected with the virus – with and without symptoms – would be 0.26%.

Harvard University epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch told the "80,000 Hours" podcast in a May 18 episode that he believes the fatality rate is "clearly above 0.2% and probably above 0.4%," likely lying somewhere between 0.2%-1.5%.

Yeah, you might want to look that up again. The CDC says its actually around 0.26%. Which is two and half times deadlier. It is also more transmissible.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that all the numbers will be wrong and not point to a true mortality rate. 53% of the total deaths in the US have come from NURSING HOMES!

So getting a true mortality rate among healthy people is going to be almost impossible. Also, if the annual flu were not kept in check by vaccines what would the death toll be? 150,000 or so annually across all age demographics?

My point is that even the common cold kills at a high rate in nursing homes. We do not know the true rate of infection because of asymptomatic infections. When the testing first started it was only administered to those who met certain symptomatic criteria. Thus resulting in a less accurate number.

The virus is real, it can kill the elderly and unhealthy, but it’s been a political weapon way more so than just a virus.
.2 to .3 percent is pretty average for a novel virus during a pandemic. To figure out the death figures, we need to figure out where herd immunity lies. The general agreement is around 60 percent, but there's been some speculation that it might be a little lower.

There are 300 million residents in the United States. 60 percent of that would mean it would require around 180 million infections to reach herd immunity. if .3 percent of those 180 million had poor outcomes, we'd be looking at a death figure of 450-500K nationally before this is over without a vaccine. Based on current rates, around 250-300K of those deaths would come from Nursing homes.

The likely only sure fire way to get a better handle on the total number of cases would require mass testing. But we don't have the equipment, and if wearing masks is this controversial, there's no way in hell you can convince a bunch of people that they should all be tested for this immediately, regardless of how they feel.

If you combine the populations of the UK, France, Germany, Spain, and Italy, its about 3 million shy of the US population. Those 5 European countries are currently at 175k Covid deaths, while the US is at 131k. I don't think its fair saying that Europe is beating this thing while the US is not. Maybe after its all over, they will have better rates than us, but right now they don't. Germany is actually the outlier, doing much better than any of the other 4 or the US.
