I saw this as well. My thoughts are that this is directly towards this news.

When he was set and balanced he had a nice looking stroke. Good luck to him.
I don't blame Jeff, other than the fact that his offense is not a great fit for a guy like Godwin to excel in. I think you'll be surprised where he ends up. No inside info, but a dude with his size and a shot as pretty as his likely will have a chance to play somewhere better than Hampton.

Yes, when left alone last year, there were huge signs of promise. But this year, you put anybody worth their salt on defense on him, then his offense was nowhere to be found. In the last handful of games, he couldn't even get close with his wide open shots. I get frustrated with our team offense from time to time, but I cannot objectively blame his lack of production on the team system. He was one of the few players over the last 2 seasons that had the green light to shoot at anytime he wanted. Instead of doing what worked for him he would try and create something that wasn't there, leading to even worse shots. I hope he finds a place where he is happy, but I would be highly surprised the move was nothing better than a lateral move at best.
He is totally rattled by JJ style regarding his play. There are very likely other issues behind this transfer.

My biggest issue with Godwin and the reason I didn't rate him as high as others on here is he had no offense other than spotting up for 3s. He doesn't have a game inside the arc at this point. Great kid, tried hard, played defense, but limited to pealing off screens for a 3.

Those guys have rolls if they can knock down 37.5% (and I think Godwin can), but he just didn't this year and saw the writing on the wall with Oliver.

He's a good kid so I hope he finds a spot.

We need more versatile offensive players.

That's why I think in a more free flowing system with more weapons around him, Godwin can excel. He is a spot up shooter, and this is not a great offense for that type of player.

This is an interesting point. This would raise the question on what kind of program he wants to go to. I can't subscribe to the fact of somewhere he could have more minutes and more freedom on offense, because he had that here. Unless he wants even more offensive freedom, but then I'm with Giles is that he has shown nothing in the last 3 years to lead anybody to think that he has that skillset. On the flip side (to Monarchblue's point), is he ok with playing 5-10min in a larger program to embrace his role-player status.

Well said. I agree and hope he lands on his feet at a good place for him to succeed.
Wow. Im sorry to see this news. I like Godwin and had high hopes for him in spite of his shooting slump. This will not help the team as he's one of the only guys with the potential to put the ball in the hoop consistently. Figured he would turn it around, if not this season, at least the next two. So JJ has recruited two big time shooters recently in Hueitt and Godwin and lost them both. I don't really know what to think.

This is wild speculation
It’s a weird transfer.

Transferring midyear makes NO sense. He has one year of eligibility left after this year and he would only get half a year out of this transfer.

Yet another example of issues I have with recruiting rankings. For being touted as "shooters" what have they produced since being in the college game? All reports state that Hueitt didn't work hard enough to merit anything but yet still wanted to more minutes at ODU, and then transfers to a place where he now is only ranked 9th in minutes and averages less than 6 points per game. Godwin was only getting about 8 points after almost 30 minutes of play per game. Neither blowing doors down with production. I'm all for people trying to better their situations whenever possible, but a lot of players have altered realities on the status of other programs and their own personal talents.

Godwin is not really a shooter. Yes, he shoots the 3 ball, but his career numbers aren’t great.

I guess I am confused by this transfer, because I thought he played in too many games to get a medical last year. And without a medical he would be sitting out spring 2020 and fall 2020. He would be eligible at the end of fall finals, so he would have only ONE semester of college ball left.

Unless I am missing something, this doesn’t make sense
My gut tells.me this.is about his changing role on the team. Perhaps JJ sat him down and told him that with Oliver playing well and with Godwin's current production he isn't going to start and isn't going to continue to get 30 min per game to try and score 6 or 8 points. I think this is an ego thing l, think times got tough and rather than work harder, it is just easier to transfer

It appears we need to find system players like the old WM teams .. they aren’t highly touted on recruiting sites but they are disciplined and work horses ..
At the beginning of the Richmond game the announcers noted that Kalu and Godwin would not start due to curfew issues.

Wonder if something stemmed from that and Godwin didnt have the right attitude.

If you dont want to be here, adios sucka!

Interesting take. Maybe JJ has been trying to put square pegs into round holes? His style of coaching would lend itself more to Princeton type sets with less athletic, more disciplined players. I actually like Princeton ball when done correctly. Shaver was good at it too. He keeps recruiting athletic unskilled players, why not go full Princeton?

Princeton is complex and takes a ton of time to teach and requires a high degree of selflessness. JJ has consistently said he thinks his limited time is better spent focusing on defense because he thinks he can have a greater impact on outcomes by teaching focusing there. We aren't going Princeton with JJ.
I like Marquis and wish him the best, but I think he's getting bad advice and counselling. He may only end up being able to play one semester after transferring. He probably does end up at Hampton for his final semester or follow a former teammate. Maybe even UNCG where Michael Hueitt went.

Team is struggling, Marquis is struggling so everyone is looking for things to change
