Judging by ODU's head coaches over the past 50 years I would say that the odds are in their favor that they would hire a better coach. The ones in bold above were surely better, and Jeff Capel may have been as well. Collectively these coaches covered pretty much every kind of tempo you could imagine playing today.

And we have been to one NCAAT in his entire tenure. If peak JJ is one NCAAT and a couple teams with high win totals against terrible schedules, that is not good enough.

The NIT season was a good season. There was at least a chance at an at large up to selection Sunday and we sniffed the top 25. The other years there was at least a glimmer of hope we could go on a run. Seasons like this one are the worst where we just flat out suck and can mail it in before the new year. We have had 6 year stretches where there have been multiple seasons like this. I am no fan of JJ and would be thrilled if he retired or parted ways (wishing for his best health obviously) but I disagree about your 6 year opinion. NCAAs are important, but as a fan, so is having a reason to be motivated to watch all season. Best 6 year stretch was 04-05 to 10-11.

Paul Webb Era
Paul Webb took control in 1976–77 and led the Monarchs to the first NIT bid in program history. Webb successfully guided the Old Dominion program to one of the nation’s premier Division I basketball programs. In nine seasons, Webb won 196 victories and took the Big Blue to eight national postseason tournaments. Webb reached the NCAA Tournament three times and the NIT five times. He also won 2 conference titles during his time as head coach of Old Dominion.

But college football and basketball are ultimate team sports. Yes JJ needs to be better too. But You’d think that JJ drives the busses and flies the charter flights the way he receives blame. Assistants need to coach and recruit and the players need to play and hold each other accountable. They have to play for each other. The coaches can’t make our layups and hit open jumpers. Time to man up and turn the page and play some freaking b-ball. Let’s go.

Yup. Def gotta give to get. I had a dad getting mad at my kids basketball practice. They're 7 and 8. I don't coach his bball team. But the coach was out and his dad (probably late 60s early 70s) was trying to coach alone so I offered to help him out for the practice. One dad was getting mad that we have a couple ball hogs. Rather than jump all over the kid for not passing I was trying to tell the kids to get open by moving around. Standing still right beside the defense or 2 feet from the kid with the ball with your hands up saying "pass it" doesn't work. All the other dad saw was 2 kids passing the ball back and forth and 3 kids not getting the ball. Instead of yelling at the coach and the other kids saying "there's more than 2 people on the team!" try and coach up the kids standing around waiting for the hand out pass.

I told that story at work this week as an analogy in business too. Martyrdom syndrome in the work place drives me nuts. "Nobody respects what I say or my role in the firm." Well, you didn't make any attempt to get open to receive a pass. Just like you didn't make an active attempt to seek out why nobody is adopting your ideas and playing the victim.

uhhh I have no idea where I was going with that. But ya. 04-cheers

ODU used to have (say 10 years ago) one of the best coaches/programs in the CAA ... maybe the best. Lately they can no longer defeat W & M, GMU, VCU, or JMU (former or current CAA members).

Which was arguably ODU's best season under Jones and probably the first time in a long time they had that level of success against those teams in the same season since Blaine was coach. W & M alone has had his number (5-2 counting this season's win) more often than not since he came to ODU.

How many of those other coaches played in a 14 team league spread over the entire country? With no rivals in conference. Are those not facts? Just your facts matter I guess....Ok just checking. U just choose not to acknowledge that this is Mickey Mouse land we now play in?

We shouldn’t be losing to William and Mary. But I think Taylor and Capel played against a winning William and Mary team maybe once or twice. Pretty sure they’ve had 5 or 6 winning seasons in a row. I’m just saying the landscape has completely changed. Y’all don’t acknowledge any of this. W&M not as bad as u make them out to be. Yes we should be better but this conference is killing us. Y’all think we have it bad? Look at Louisiana Tech, WKU, Utep. Charlotte. All once proud b-ball programs. I wonder what they all have in common????

He picks the players, coaches the players, decides which players play in games, and how much they play... He had no role in this?

Those were all one bid leagues as well. People let a 3 year period skew their entire perspective of the CAA. The travel alone in this conference drastically evens the playing field. Because of the travel there is zero away game fan bases. Zero fan interest. Zero presence at a conference tournament. No trash talk. No bragging rights. All of it. Complete garbage. These things drastically effect recruiting even if u don’t acknowledge it. Kids families can’t just pack up the car and drive to El Paso or Miami. Everyone’s b-ball program in this conference has gone downhill. Maybe aside from programs that were non existent to begin with such as Marshall or UTSA or Rice. Even those teams just went from complete garbage to slightly garbage. WKU, LT, UTEP, Charlotte all fell off a cliff. ODU has the best conference record since joining. Sorry if I can’t get on board and blame one person for all of these recent woes.
There’s little argument that CUSA is a terrible place to be, but without realignment there appear to be no other options. CUSA should just let ODU, Marshall and UTEP be football only members.

No bc the conference tourney is a 3-4 day event that is somewhat of a crapshoot while the regular season is 18-20 games.

Last year we werent very good; significantly worse than other teams that did not make tourney. Thats life in 1 bid leagues.

I wish. Our only hope is for the football team to get really good. Like undefeated season good. Hahahaha. Jeez. Or have 3 really good seasons in a row and then maybe that gives us some type of name recognition. Along with at least having pretty good basketball programs at the same time.

I’m not some JJ apologist. It might come off that way. I just find it ridiculous that people can’t acknowledge the current circumstances. And to compare him to previous coaches is laughable to me. Sorry, it just is. I loved Blaine Taylor. Definitely my favorite coach. The ending was sad. But his circumstances and conditions as coach here were extremely different than what we are dealing with now. If you don’t acknowledge the current disadvantages you either aren’t paying attention, are in complete denial, or just choose to live in fantasy land.

Its nowhere close. There are 2 jones coached ODU teams that were far better then last years team. 1 that should have been an at large team.
