Just a few minutes ago from Josh Walfish at the DNR.

I think that's great news, it's good for Coach Laporte and it's good for JMU Softball recruiting.
Ha, and I suppose it proves once again what we say here does get seen.

ooph...been a rough few months for the softball program.

Even though she is saying the right things I give it 50/50 at best Good ever steps inside the circle again for JMU. She can red-shirt this year, graduate in the spring, and transfer as a grad-transfer and not sit-out to Auburn as their ace pitcher/1B for a top tier program in the SEC and make a serious run at Oklahoma City with her old Coach. Hope I am wrong here, but this seems very coincidental and lines up very well. Gives Dean a year to reshape (not that is should need much) the team in Auburn to buy-into his ideas and boom bring in a ‘mercenary’ for a shot at the title. Knowing you are in the SEC, most likely will get to play regional and super-regional at home.

Of course JMU will miss Good this season, but I think CC will be very good this season and coupled with McCabe and if one of the freshmen step-up JMU will be just fine this year.

Seems a bit of stretch that a season-ending injury is "coincidental" but it is a scary thought that it lines up for her potential transfer. I'd like to think she will stick close to home and stay with a team and fan base that appreciates her but that could just be wishful thinking.
I seriously doubt she wanted surgery and miss a season of softball just so she could transfer to an SEC school.

Some people are just happy where they are.

A season-ending injury that was hush-hush and not even the team knew about or knew was serious enough to need season-ending surgery. I did not say she wanted to 'blow-out' a knee which this does not sound like......but could choose to do some 'cleanup' work on. Hope I am not reading too much into it, but seems convenient and coincidental to me.

Players are saying she's staying, coaches at opposing schools are saying she's leaving. Might be wishful thinking on both of their parts, but clearly someone is wrong. IF she does leave and go to Auburn, I would question Mickey's ethics. Though I made the joke about her leaving, count me as one that believes she's staying. Hope I'm right.

I think she's staying too. Transfer with only one season of eligibility left? I doubt it. Last night on the local news she was quoted as saying she would be with the team cheering them on and helping all she could. Doesn't sound like an attitude that would transfer to me.
Just a thought but it sounds like JMU may still be in the market for a coach starting the 2019 season. Having Megan on the roster for 2019; I would think that would be a "carrot" for a coach considering JMU.
Guys:

Do you really think it is fair to a college softball player to question their injuries and sincerity? We cannot do this.

AMEN!!!!!!!!! Leave the poor woman alone.
I'm not questioning the injury, she's having surgery on her knee and 1) she's not doing that for no reason, and 2) no doctor is likely to be performing it for no reason. As for questioning anyone's sincerity, EVERYONE in the softball community, including coaches at other programs, are openly discussing this turn of events. Given how similar situations have played out in other sports, it's perfectly reasonable to question the timing. She has subsequently answered the questions asked, and most everyone on this thread has agreed to accept her at her word (as we should). She's one of the top 5 pitchers in the country, there isn't a program out there that wouldn't give just about anything to have her. So what's the problem, I'd rather have the issues addressed so everyone can move on than to have this cloud hanging over the entire season. That wouldn't be fair to coaches, players or fans.
The season begins 2 weeks from today in Mexico. Of the 5 games the Good Gals play there, Louisiana Tech (who we play twice) made the NCAAT last year. Nevada and Long Beach State each finished around .500 on the season a year ago.

I also noticed the originally-schedule doubleheader at Campbell on Saturday, Feb. 16, has now been split into games against Bucknell and Morehead State (both at Campbell Univ).

Agreed....all that stated is correct and this is definitely something open for discussion. It is a JMU Sports message board after all. I don't think anyone is confronting her on campus or calling her up to badger her about it. This is JMU Sports news.
I think she is sincere in her comments today. But things can change.

Once the season has ended, she is going to be "recruited" by programs all over the country.

and once that talk begins, who knows what could happen. She may be tempted for a move to a so-called "bigger" program.

we shall see. For this year, it's definitely a blow. and if she does return in 2019, we will have an experienced seasoned team that could be Super Regional, or more, worthy once again.
The injury could be a positive for 2019 if it allows the coaching staff an opportunity to identify pitching depth options this year. There's bound to be a game here or there during the season where Good/Alexander aren't quite dialed in or to preserve innings. In the early part of this past season, three game weeks were especially tricky to navigate on the mound until Alexander started really pitching well in the latter half.
It's very possible that she is both being sincere now and yet things could change next school year. I don't think Coach Dean would do anything dishonest to recruit her over, but if Good made the call then I wouldn't hold it against either one of them.

If the exact same scenario happened in a sport like basketball, I would say that her transferring is the most likely outcome. But in softball, staying at JMU wouldn't change the trajectory of her post-graduate career (in terms of softball or the other aspects of her life).

We have no reason to believe anything short of the fact that Megan Good is a high quality athlete, person, and representative of JMU. It's not worth speculating what'll happen next year, but I'd say anything is possible. Also, Olympics are coming up in 2020. Maybe it's worth it to just leave the NCAA altogether if the national team comes calling. No idea the probability of that happening, but pre-injury I know I heard some speculation on it.

I agree with everything you said except the part about Coach Dean, there is no doubt in my mind that he would instigate that transfer and not give it a second thought.

Interesting point about the national team, that would potentially change everything.
Who can lend insight to the transfer rules? Does the transfer process in softball require that a player be granted their release prior to start the one-year “lay over” so they retain what eligibility the player has left?

Seems to me, that if Megan has not already requested her release, and any transfer requires a year off, she won’t be transferring anywhere with only one year of eligibility left.

Transfers requiring a year off are only in football and men's & women's basketball. Sports like baseball, softball, tennis, etc., do not require a mandatory year off. So, it doesn't really apply to her situation. If she played women's basketball, she could avoid having to sit out a year also because she is due to graduate in May (or at least that is what's been stated) and graduate transfer rules - at least for now as they are being discussed as to whether they will continue - waive the requirement to sit out a year in those 3 sports.

My personal opinion (not directed at you) is that folks should 1) take Megan at her word (she's earned that IMO); 2) realize that she bleeds purple; 3) realize that her jersey likely will be retired one day - maybe her last home game in 2019; and 4) she has a good chance to make the WCWS in 2019 wearing a JMU jersey and if you make it there you have as good a chance as any other player to win a national title.

edit note: one more thing...I think Megan Good will be a head coach at JMU one day when her playing days are over...which, considering pro ball and US National Team and so forth will hopefully be a long time off...though, a lot of those gals work as assistant coaches at colleges in parallel to their playing pro/USA/etc.
