Yep, they are meaningful .... oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

The real pisser for me is that this apparently went down after the Ole Miss game. And, when did our decline start...after the Ole Miss game. We struggled against Tulane, got whooped by Navy, blew it against Houston, and got hammered by Temple. 03-nutkick

My guess is that we haven't had the staff's full attention since the Ole Miss game and it showed in our team's performance. 03-banghead

Tampering, anyone?

[/ According to my source it was finalized after Navy game.

Finalized, yes, but the distractions started before that, like after the Ole Miss game - thus, the drop in performance starting with the Tulane game.

It makes perfect sense now. I don't know who of the staff is going with Fuente (Galen Scott is definitely not going) but if quite a bit are going to VT then distractions are natural process of coaching change. Thinking about where to move, selling house, knowing it's going to be goodbye to close friends very soon, thinking of what kind of players they need to now recruit for VT in the coming weeks. I bet you that the current football players felt the differences and distractions even if no one said anything and the result on the field was a not 100% focus on the games. Even Galen Scott knows he's probably cooked these last couple of games and gave up

So after starting w/ a home game against the mighty Liberty Flames, Fuente will get to play the Vawls in front of over 150,000 at Bristol Speedway.

Interesting

Va Tech fans don't seem to be thrilled with Fuente.

He's 38-38 as a HC.

Take out the 14-0 season and he's 24-38 in 5 other seasons for an average of 4.8 wins and 7.6 losses.

Why would you take out the 14-0 season? That's stupid. Sort of like all of those people who say the only reason we were good was because we had DeAngelo. Or Rose. Or Keith Lee. The point is we DID have those guys. If this guy coached to a 14-0 season, that tells me he's capable of it. Just like my old golf coach told me - the high school guys that CAN make it on tour are the ones who shoot 65 then 75. Not the ones who shoot 72-72. You can't be just slightly above average all the time. That'll get you nowhere.

Good point...as Chizik was one of the few HC's at Iowa State that didn't get fired...as almost no one can win there (ISU just fired their latest HC the other day).

While Chizik went 5-19 at Iowa State in his 2 years there...he had a successful run as DC at UCF then Auburn then Texas....and obviously ended up back at Auburn as HC...and has done a great job with UNC's D this year (huge improvement over last year).

Not many HC's can say they won a National Championship (let alone a perfect record), and yes, Cam Newton was a huge part of that...but almost every HC that ever won a national title had some great player on their team.

No they don't. They just don't know him. But the guy is a winner and he will be successful no matter where he goes. I can only hope that he decides to stay at Memphis. But IMO, he gone. 03-hissyfit
I think Fuente will look back and wish he'd handled his transition better. In hindsight we can all see that it affected our on field product.

I we are being honest, thank him for his time (it was a good run). But if he knows he's leaving, pack you stuff up and hit the road. Put a coach in place that wants to be be here.

I've got no problem with those of you that want to celebrate his time here but if he has made up his mind, we should too.

My words to Fuente "thanks for everything, can you clean out your office?"

Handled it better? You seriously think it would have been better for him to just pack his bags and take off after the Navy game than to finish the season with Memphis (assuming this was all finalized after that game)? Bobby Petrino was roasted by the media for years when he left Atlanta for Arkansas with 2 games left in the season, and their season was already basically over (not shot at the playoffs).

Fuente has handled this about the only way possible. He has been honest about being willing to listen to other job offers and has not thrown out a bunch of coach speak about how much he loves being here and how this is where he want to be and so on. This is just a tough situation, but I have no problem with how he has gone about it.

Yes, if you are going to agree in principle during the season to terms of employment with another institution. If that isn't a conflict of interest I don't know what is. If he couldn't wait until the end of the regular season, we shouldn't have to either. You are either with us, or against us.

And yes, Petrino should have been roasted, but he showed total lack of class by not addressing the team and players on the way out. Fuente and Petrinos situation are much different, as are Petrino and Fuente.

Losing CJF is a hard pill to swallow, especially given how the last 3 games have gone. Lot's of speculation about lack of preparation, focus, and execution. This season had limitless potential starting 8-0 with a much speculated B12 expansion looming. Tiger Nation has tasted success, and our fan base responded in terms of support and enthusiasm. If indeed CJF is leaving, we (as a program) are in a better place. However, 1-2 additional seasons would have cemented a cultural change (team, fans), re-established recruiting roads in MidSouth, upgraded FB facilities (assuming CJF had a hand in final design), increased booster donations, upgraded roster talent and depth.

*perhaps IPF ground breaking was delayed due to all of this?
**we've all been part of teams (work, sports) where key leadership has left. There is definitely a certain change in demeanor, environment that is felt vs said. I'm sure the players got the sense that something was off.
I hate to see him go but i am really enjoying the level of crazy here and other places like Twitter the last two days. Some of you loons never disappoint.
If Coach Fuente takes the VaTech position, I will thank him and wish him all the best.

My hope, and this is in no way a shot a Coach Fuente, is that our next head coach takes us to places that make us forget all about Justin Fuente.

I disagree.

These things happen all the time and the protocol is to announce after the season.

They can be handled poorly...recruiting to the new school while still here, leaving us on probation, or immediately making disparaging comments about Memphis. But short of that...finish the season, then head out.

I do not remember when Beamer announced his retirement, but have a hard time believing our team was less prepared for Navy...or Houston...which absent fourth quarter turnovers or a missed FG we win over an undefeated team on the road.

Yes...they looked unprepared against Temple. Doubt that was conspiratorial.
