Sporting News on ECU's claim to deliver whole state of NC

Basic breakdown of ECU's athletic department. What's interesting is that they don't really address whether the claim is accurate or not.

It remains to be seen as to whether or not we could bring "the entire state" of NC. I would compare ECU to VA Tech in football, once Va Tech was able to gain access to a "power" conference they were arguably able to deliver the state of VA in football. The article states that ECU has played NC State many times in the past but what doesn't say is that of NC States 5 top sellouts 3 of them were against a visiting ECU. We also draw larger television ratings when we play NC State or UNC than when UNC and NC State play each other. I personally think that is very telling considering that the UNC-NC State rivalry is considered the premier state rivalry.

I agree that if elevated to P status that E.C.U. would have little difficulty translating that into a new stadium capacity of 72-75,000 and that you would travel very well.

I don't think any of that is an issue. What I believe to be the issue here is that the networks, particularly ESPN, don't care to pay "P" prices for another North Carolina school. A second issue would be Chapel Hill's objections. They wouldn't want a strong football brand with equal, or greater status to theirs in the state.

Chapel Hill would not be able to block us if we had an invite to any conference especially the SEC to much money for the state to make.

What's interesting to me is that the AD claims that ECU will bring the entire state of NC into the fold. Obviously, he's talking about cable households and overall ratings. Nonetheless, I find it interesting that an official would make that claim. I'm not doubting him at all. Actually, I think it gives the statement more credence than an upper level official would make it.

You are correct but that can be solved by ECU not taking a full share for a period of time. If you actually believe or more importantly if the SEC actually believes that ECU could seat 70,000 plus and deliver the state for television than adding ECU should be a no brainer.
It's about more than that.

The SEC wouldn't take the cache hit to take 5th best in NC.

That's no knock on ECU but they've got 4 very serious caps on them.

But we are not the 5th best. Tied for #2 in the state with NC State behind UNC. When it comes to viewers, fan support, etc. Duke and Wake might be P5 but their fan base is more like a G5 program. Another positive is that we are on our own side of the state where we don't have to worry about sharing the spotlight with any of the ACC schools.

Who would the SEC take in Virginia? Would they take UVA or Va Tech or is it a toss up? Which would they have taken in the mid 80's (definitely UVA). Why pay top dollar for market share if you can pay bottom dollar and take the market share anyway?

Well, because we aren't the Big 10 and Big 12 where you have to buy your way in over a protracted period of time. The SEC is share and share alike for TV revenue so there is no bottom dollar or top dollar, there is just an equal revenue distribution. So if an ECU made it in they would earn the same TV payout as Alabama. That's why we are lot tighter with our invitations than other conferences.

I'm a believer in the wholistic approach to expansion, within reason.

The schools need only be more alike than not alike.

ECU from most viewpoints is more dissimilar to the SEC schools than it is similar, especially from the wholistic view.

UNC and NC State are more alike than dislike.
I agree unc and nc state are basketball first schools and nc state isn't even that good at basketball.

strange I would have picked sec for huge fball fan bases and an outstanding football first culture that just makes the way of life 12 months out of the year.

Well hell we are becoming largest school soon, and big10 has some large schools. Maybe we are more whole with them lol as we bring the state of North Carolina, parts of Other states as we live and breath football

I would bet a lot of money that most UNC fans would disagree with you whole heartily while they sit on their pedestal and thumb their nose at the SEC and the perceived academic short comings of most of the member institutions. Most ACC fans especially UNC fans were appalled when they invited Louisville. NC State would be a good fit but they will never leave UNC (even though I believe it would be in their best interest).
Best hope is for ECU to get into the Big 12 and have some success there.

I think what might block ECU at this point is ESPN not wanting a legit challenger to the ACC's dominance of Tobacco Road.
