Well, the Sunbelt had already kicked them out basically. They weren't going to have them return as a football only member after 2017.
So who do you think we plug into the 2022 schedule with VT and UVA? Whoever it is, it is sure to be a tougher opponent than Idaho.

I mean, Idaho is coming here, so it could just be our FCS game for that year.

As an FCS team, I doubt they will want to make that kind of expensive trip to play an FBS team without a pay day, and I doubt we will want to pay them. That would also cut out a more local FCS team that would be preferred. I just don't see us keeping that game on the schedule.
If that game is cancelled, I would expect they owe us a buy-out.
I think ODU would let them out of the deal because ODU asked them to move the game from 2019 to 2022 so that we could play VT.

I think if we drop there is no buy-out. If they drop, I'm sure there are provisions for a monetary buy-out to Old Dominion.

I'm sure we will drop the game and no money will change hands. However, if we really wanted to force the issue, we would definitely get the buy-out.

They willingly dropped down and changed the basis under which the contract was signed. We had the cost of flying there and they had the benefit of a home FBS game, under the assumption that we would get a return FBS game.

I doubt we would try to profit off of their failure. But we are certainly capable of doing exactly that.

Was there a presumption of a return FBS game? The original return date was 2019 and the game @Idaho was played during their one independent season; there was plenty of talk that they wouldn't be long for FBS then and they probably wouldn't have been had the Sun Belt not given them one final lifeline. I'm sure ODU hoped that the return game would be against an FBS Idaho, but I feel confident that the were preparing for everything from a Mountain West Idaho to an Idaho with no football at all.

I'm guessing you're right that ODU knew this was a possibility or even a certainty. Everyone did. But is that laid out in the contract? If so, what are the agreed upon considerations? I'm sure Harry will let us know soon.
Norfolk State will be the 2019 season opener on August 31st and the first opponent at the new Foreman Field.

Post 1 updated.

Good deal all around. An incredibly affordable game. And a good team to tune up against before the trip to Blacksburg. And they get good money for a trip across town.
By 2019 Booman will be a full fledged Monarchs fan!!!! 05-mafia 04-cheers
Tough schedule here: UNC @ home September 16, 2017 then VT on the road September 23, 2017.

It's an underground campaign by VT to make sure our branding is as damaged as possible. In their best interests to keep ODU as obfuscated as possible. 05-stirthepot

Haha, and on a side note - I really hope the Hokies are looking ahead to the reigning national champs the week after they play ODU.
^agreed. I was thinking the same thing. Clemson after us is a good slot. But one of their posters on TechSideline called us out in the final rankings and said "might not be a bad game."
Liberty and the associated shuffling of the schedule has been updated on post #1.
