Notre Dame deserves better than Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl.
I expect Notre Dame to get the Citrus Bowl slot. They would have gotten the BWW if Ohio State had been in the CFP.
Shows you how dumb i am, when i posted that i thought the Citrus was the BWW bowl, lol.
Oops, my bad, BWW is the sponsor of the Citrus. It does get confusing with sponsors switching from one bowl to another. For ND though, this is a very good bid. It's absolutely the best bowl that's not an NY6 game. They would have gone to the Camping World Bowl, formerly the Russell Athletic, formerly the Champ Sports Bowl, had Ohio State been in the CFP.
Yes, IIRC, there used to be a "Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl" just a few years ago that was played in Arizona, and then BWW became the sponsor of the Citrus bowl, so it is confusing.
My complaint is that I think Notre Dame deserves the final Access Bowl spot over TCU or Washington. Won't happen, but that's where i'm coming from here.
But if they don't get the Access spot, then sure, the Citrus (which i don't think is still affiliated with BWW, but was!) is the next best thing. Will probably face LSU in that bowl, an excellent matchup.

Yes, and also because of the Orange Bowl contract, they can't even pit USC vs Ohio State in another bowl either.
USC Ohio st will be in Fiesta bowl I'm pretty sure
I don't think they can be. The Orange Bowl gets the highest available team among the B1G/SEC/Notre Dame, and at #5, that is Ohio State.
So by contract the Orange Bowl has to be Ohio State vs Miami (highest available ACC team).
Wasn't clear how that worked when the Rose Bowl was a playoff game.

I don't believe that the Orange can get the Big Ten champion. Has to be a runner up, but Wisconsin is the highest ranked available runner up between the Big Ten and SEC.

Oops! I was wrong! Ohio State cannot be in Orange Bowl because the contract says the B1G or SEC champ will not play in that game.
My apologies.

You were correct, I was wrong - the committee CAN make that matchup if they want. The Orange contract excludes the B1G/SEC champ from the game, so Wisconsin will be in the OB, and Ohio State in either the Fiesta, Peach, or Cotton bowls.

4 years:

2 times Big 10 champ didn't get in (but one wildcard)
2 times Big 12 champ didn't get in
Maybe the Pac 12 and Big 10 will re-think their opposition to 8. This is two years in a row the Big 10 champ didn't get in.
One can hope.

To my knowledge, the Orange Bowl contract is in effect for the 8 years of the CFP that the Orange is not a playoff game, which means this year.
My point was the same as the previous poster. Do they get the best non-playoff/non-Rose Bowl Big 10/SEC/ND team or do they get the best non-champ/non-Rose Bowl Big 10/SEC/ND team? That's what I'm not certain about. If they get the best non-playoff, they can take Ohio St.
edit-I see you answered the question. Champ excluded.

As i said above, I was wrong ... The Orange contract excludes the B1G or SEC champs from the game (unless it is a playoff), so Ohio State will NOT be in the Orange Bowl. Wisconsin will.

Miami Wisconsin in Orange and USC Ohio St in Fiesta are all but official. UCF will be in Peach. Penn st, TCU, Washington, and ND wait to see who gets the last 3 at large slots

Had Ohio ST. gotten in, that would have been 3 times in 4 years they got in, getting the benefit of a doubt in a controversial decision. In 2014 they got in over TCU and Baylor. In 2016 they got in over Big 10 champ Penn ST.

I think this selection will make the Big 10 consider re-balancing their divisions and if the SEC is smart, they will consider doing the same. But since we got two in this year we'll probably drag our feet. But our imbalance could have cost us a shot this year as well. It just broke well for us in the last three weeks.
I've even wondered why the conferences don't just redivide the divisions every year where odd finishers are in one and even finishers are in the other. A predetermined rivalry game can be preserved as the 8th conference game and all other rotations could simply cease.

Ohio State shouldn't have lost that game to the "weaker" division.

Part of me believes that a conference champion (OSU) should get in before a team (Alabama) that didn't even play for a conference championship. But that Iowa shellacking says a lot. On the whole, I think they got it right.

No, geographic divisions makes the most sense. If you try and "balance" the divisions you'll be realigning every other year.
Look at a team like Tennessee which was supposed to be good then went winless in SEC play, or Michigan who was supposed to be a playoff contender and finished below MSU who was supposed to be a basement dweller.
You have to line up divisions for the long run, not short term success.

You have to think that Clemson's 31-0 pasting of them last year had an unspoken impact as well.

If I heard right on the CFP show, the B10 has not scored a point in the playoffs since the OSU win the CFP.

There aren't any easy solutions to be sure, but we both have to admit that the SEC East and Big 10 West are problems to our respective conferences and have been for quite some time now. The resurgence of Georgia just puts the SEC East on par with Wisconsin and the Big 10 West. Meanwhile, the SEC West with a little earlier emergence of L.S.U. could have easily given every West member two losses and then we are in the same position as the Big 10 this year. Next year the Aggies will be re-energized, L.S.U. will be peaking and it will be a dogfight again. Some semblance of balance is needed whatever the means.

I think this puts to an end the "conventional wisdom" that Notre Dame has to join a conference because of the existence of the Playoff Committee.
This makes two years in a row that a non-conference champ or conference championship game participant made the playoffs.

Yes, if Notre Dame had beaten Miami and Stanford, they would have taken the last playoff spot from Alabama.
