RE: Fox gets OSU vs Michigan and other marquee matchups
if the whole season ratings are equal though, how much does it really mean though? I mean, it'll be interesting to compare the Ohio St/Michigan and assuming Penn St/Pittsburgh averages to the Ohio St/Oklahoma and assuming Nebraska/Iowa averages. I mean, ESPN is GUARANTEED to have 1st choice of any OOC game the Big Ten has. That in a lot of years is a HUGE guarantee... Just look at last year-week 1. The LSU/Wisconsin game drew 7.832 million viewers. The Hawaii/Michigan game(#2) drew 2.135 million viewers. That's a gap of over 5.5 million viewers. And that's not the exception, that's the rule. You talk about guarantees. That's a pretty nice guarantee that ESPN has, wouldn't you say? 2022 Notre Dame opens at Ohio St. ESPN will get 1st chance at that game. 2021 Auburn plays at Penn St. ESPN 1st chance there. 2020 Michigan St hosts Miami Florida. ESPN 1st chance there. 2019 Notre Dame plays at Michigan. Yep, ESPN.

I'm not even sure what we're debating about. Sure, the ESPN package is still going to be very good because the Big Ten has a very deep pool of valuable games (just as the CBS AFC package is still very good). It seems pretty logical that the Big Ten Championship Game is a big chunk of that difference.

pretty much. For one, there's only like 3-4 teams that are capable of having a Marquee OOC matchup. then, not all are going to have one in the same year by any stretch.

It is a big chunk of the difference- but only like 30-35 million of it. The other 15-20 million of it is to get Ohio St/Michigan. And my point is simple, ESPN having the right to get the top OOC game each year is gigantic. In every year, there's been a week where there's been a pretty big difference OOC between game 1 and game 2. I mean you look 2 years ago- take the Ohio St/Michigan game along with the #2 game that weekend(Iowa/Nebraska)- and compare that to the gap between Oregon/Michigan St and Oregon St/Michigan. The package that Fox would get drew 7.66 million. The package that ESPN would get drew 7.04 million. And the rest of the package is pretty darn close to exactly the same thing.

RE: Fox gets OSU vs Michigan and other marquee matchups
If the B1G championship game is worth at least $30M, that means FOX paid, at most, $20M - or about 10% - more than ESPN for essentially the same quality college football inventory.
FOX gets the inventory it desperately needs, which includes one of the top rivalry games in all of college football that is certain to get great ratings over the next 6 years. Excellent move for FOX and FS1, even if they overpaid for this inventory (which is debatable).
Good for ESPN for keeping solid access to quality B1G games at perhaps a better price.

RE: Fox gets OSU vs Michigan and other marquee matchups
I think that's a definite take away from the Big Ten. ESPN got a great package for the 190 million.
And the one thing that I would argue- ESPN really didn't need the Big Ten CCG. They have already Big 12 in odd years/Pac 12 in even years game, along with already the ACC's CCG. So ESPN will always have 2 CCG and Fox will always have 2 CCG. The only thing for Fox is that yearly, the Big Ten game will always go up against 2 CCG.
The 1 point where I would disagree. 25 games is not really that much inventory. It's like 2 games a week. That's not going to make FS1 a threat.

Good observation on the CCG properties.
Regarding FS1, more and better B12 and PAC inventory will be available for FS1 broadcast, which will only help. Michigan-Utah game was on FS1, and it got pretty good ratings. More games like that and FS1 will improve its position, at least during the college football and basketball seasons.

The problem though with that is that a specific number of Big 12 and Pac 12 games MUST contractually be on Big Fox. For Big 12- 6 games must be on Big Fox. For Pac 12- it's 8 games that must be on Big Fox. So that's 14 slots that are gone. There is not an infinite amount of space on Big Fox.

Michigan-Utah was a double whammy as it was on FS1 AND a weekday game! (Thursday I think)

I remember being at a bar seeing Michigan and Utah and thinking:
1. Wow, Michigan is playing at Utah? That's odd.
2. Wow, Michigan is playing on FS1?. That's odd.
3. Wow, Michigan is playing on a Thursday? That's odd.

It was the season opener weekend. You see lots of games that Thursday night. Heck, this year, Ohio St/Indiana conference game will be on that Thursday night.

Also, for the weeks that are close, you won't see the specific games announced at this point of the year at all. So if say ESPN drafts a late week, and there's 2 good looking games now, ESPN would get to make the selection much later in the season. So lets say ESPN gets week 12 as a pick. Got 2 really good looking matchups possible- Michigan/Wisconsin or Nebraska/Penn St. ESPN could wait until a week before the games to declare which one they want. Odds pretty good one of those games will wimp out.
The odds are pretty darn good that Fox and ESPN ratings wise for the season will be pretty darn close. My only question is this- is it worth 50 million extra for a CCG and a negligible difference in regular season ratings?
Why do you keep acting like everyone is saying that? The majority are not saying that at all. Thats your straw man. Thats the argument you set up to spin this into some great win for ESPN like they somehow one upped Fox here. Fox gets first choice every year. Thats big for them because every year of this contract they get OSU/Michigan. Thats great for their brand.
They don't get to wait a week before the games are played to pick. The picks are made well in advanced of the games being played. You are completely talking out of your ass.

No I am not. The weeks are picked well in advance, but not the specific games(sounds like the week draft has already taken place quite frankly). The specific games are selected either 6 or 12 days before the game takes place.
if Fox takes OSU/Michigan, that's fine. ESPN gets 1st crack at ANY OOC game the Big Ten hosts. That's often times a HUGE game, especially with consideration to the 2nd best game on that early season weekend, when a lot of teams are playing dog teams.

Well, looks like Fox took Ohio St/Penn St and Notre Dame/Michigan St based on what they released this week. So it seems like ESPN will get the PSU/Michigan game(and the Saturday before the World Series starts), AND Ohio St/Oklahoma. And they would have a 3rd top choice as well.
Bottom line, the regular season packages are going to be pretty much dead equal. I know you don't want to hear that, but that is reality.
