anyone remember the fighting Tony Mitchell's the team that could just line up on the court and other SBC schools would just start to shake? Top 10 player and future lottery pick Tony Mitchell, top 100, 4 star player, Roger Franklin, top 70 player and #7 player in Texas, Jordan Williams and a few high 3star recruits.
The only problem Johnny Jones was the bench coach and then Tony Benford
COACHING MATTERS....even when you have highly rated recruits
You fail to mention that Tony Mitchell NEVER lived up to the hype. He wasn't that good. He ended up drafted in the 2nd round, based purely off of his high school reputation. He lasted less than a year in the NBA, and has played in the Phillipines most of his career. He wasn't even good enough to make it in Europe. Instead he's battling it out with Japheth Aguilar in the Philippines. Certainly, Johnny Jones and Tony Benford are subpar coaches. But Tony Mitchell was VASTLY overrated as a player coming out of high school.
Why would I point out "Tony Mitchell NEVER lived up to the hype"? Can you point me to where these recruits for Western played one game in college?
So basically you agree....
right now Western is going on hype and a coach that hasn't proved he can coach a team pasted the 2nd game of the NCAA Tourney?
Do you think Tony Mitchell was the first or even the last to be "VASTLY overrated as a player"? Point is the game isn't player or won based off of HS rankings.
Because the entire basis of your post is that COACHING MATTERS. You were asserting that North Texas didn't win because of coaching. I am merely throwing a wrinkle that it is entirely possible they did not win because a highly rated player did not live up to the billing. The facts are Johnny Jones took UNT to the tournament with a very good team the year before Mitchell. He also got that same UNT team back to the Sun Belt finals after a disappointing year with Mitchell. I think that it is possible UNT's problem was that Tony Mitchell simply wasn't as good as advertised and not the coaching.
I am fully aware WKU has a talented class that could be overrated. And if that does happen, then your COACHING MATTERS mantra would still be irrelevant. However, if those players go on to achieve great accolades and we still aren't winning at a high clip then you can beat your chest and say "I told you so".
Personally, I'm not the kind of person to trash my own program or coach. You can go on pretending your passive-agressive jabs at Stansbury aren't meant to slam him, but we all know you are throwing out the bait so you can prove us all wrong. Or, in the case where he wins big, can come back and say "show me one instance where I said I wanted him to fail". I'm over your little games. It gets old after a while.
The only reason it is getting old to you...
I never say what you think you read. I'm not basing COACHING MATTERS...
on one season or two
Coach Stansbury had many top ranked players at Miss St and never went past the 2nd game of the tourney. Johnny Jones got fired because of that same reason.
COACH MATTERS....
maybe not so much if you are competing in a conference lacking overall talent top to bottom. Then talent can over come coaching..to a point. But at Western...
I thought we don't settle for conference tourney championships? Or losing 1st round of the NCAA Tourney?
Just because I'm not on here beating my chest about a recruiting class doesn't mean I ever want a Western coach to fail. Some of you same Western fans .. couldn't stand Marshall fans pointing out their bigtime players in football and how that meant they were going to beat everyone.
Well some of you Western fans...became those same fans you ***** about.
Ask Marshall fans which mattered the most. Highly ranked players or coaching. I bet 95% will say....
COACHING MATTERS!
At least those Marshall fans did their bragging after actually winning the conference and being ranked. Western fans are doing it after losing in the first round of the conference tourney to a team that hadn't won away from home all season...
COACHING MATTERS
If pointing out bad coaching makes me less of a fan...so be it. I will still be one of the few sitting in the stands if they lose. I will still be one of the very very very few Western fan sitting in the stands on road game as long as the give effort...win or lose. No matter who's coaching or who's on the court.
HH has a search button and so does this board. I will wait for you to show me where I put our coach down. Other than to point our so far in 15 years he hasn't been that great of a coach...compared to the talent he recruits. Not once will you find a Told you so post by me. Not my style. If it comes up in a debate type back and forth I will defend my point but I never post with a told you so type post.
Hope he proves me wrong. But I wont beat my chest about paper talent and tell other teams we roll out the ball and win
Just so we know what you and the other Western fan took offense to below is that post...
