At least the following game is next week, should Rice make it that far. Georgia Southern (18-14, hosting its first round game) or Utah Valley (15-16).

BTW, USF's spring break is also this week.

I guess that's what happens when conference TV deals bring in almost no money and you have to bid to participate. The other teams are really strapped, and nobody showed well enough in the rankings to get NIT consideration. We should probably be thankful that some donors stepped up to reinforce a bid. (That's a presumption on my part, but I would think we bid strongly.)

And vastly underseeded Middle Tennessee State provides the first upset of the NCAA tournament by easily handling #5 seed Minnesota. MTSU now has #4 seed Butler in the round of 32 which is another winnable game.

Congrats to the Blue Raiders!

Yes indeed! Great job MTSU.

Great win and the referees are really outstanding compared to the crap in Conference USA.

Don't exactly know which thread to put this in, but reports are that Will Wade is a top choice for a few jobs, which I'd assume would put Rhoades on the shortlist for VCU because they love him. That's the one job you never wanted to see open up.

Well. If that happens, we will just have to make him an offer he can't refuse.
Rhoades seems to be on his way up and he may not view Rice as his final destination, but it would be great if we could get 2-3 more seasons with him as HC. Hopefully, punch our ticket to the dance. If that happens we will probably lose him for sure, but his stock will have really gone up. Enough that he might be able to go to a top 30 team.

One might have thought the same thing about Coach Graham as well. While I don't think we can compete financially in football, the economics in basketball are at least slightly more reasonable. I certainly hope we could retain Coach Rhoades for at least a few more years before he is really priced out of Rice's range, but I really hope he becomes so successful that Rice realizes he is worth the investment.

Will Wade (VCU's coach) to LSU is making noise. Not a done deal yet. But it shows LSU aiming higher than Rhoades, as best we can tell.

Does Rhoades go back east? His roots are there in the mid-Atlantic. Does VCU even want him?

Snark intended, but with a point: is VCU considering UVU's coach?

He was runner-up for the VCU job in his first year here when he only won 12 games. You have to think he's on the top of their list after winning 23.

I'm not sure if he was runner-up or not. At the time, there was one other former coach from Smart's early NCAA teams that was on the list - Mike Jones at Radford. I noticed he wasn't on the list that the author of the article above mentioned, but he should be, IMO.
Quote:Three current head coaches are former VCU assistants: Mike Rhoades at Rice, Jamion Christian at Mount St. Mary’s, and John Brannen at Northern Kentucky.
as I noted above, it should be at least 4 coaches - though Jones didn't make the post-season this year, unlike the other 3 above (the last 2 winning conference tournaments to go to the NCAAs)
