Biggest Non-Conference G5 Rival
Here's another offseason topic. Who would you all say is your biggest non-conference G5 rival and do you have any future games scheduled with them at this time?

For App, I'd say Marshall due to history and the future series.
Others might be ECU and Charlotte. Charlotte is the only one of those two on future schedules.

None.
We are quite booked up against None at the moment. Most years, actually. Even several times per year.

Marshall might be the closest thing we have.
We had a series going with UCF in the 80s 90s but we beat them like a drum and it was lopsided.

I don't know about right now. I'd say App doesn't really have a G5 non-conference rivalry. Marshall and Charlotte sure have potential with the upcoming games against both. But we have never yet played Charlotte and the good Marshall games were all in-conference in the 80s and 90s.
ECU would be nice to have as an OOC rival but only two football games have been played between the two since before most of those on this board were born.
Since I started following App as a freshman 22 years ago, the only true out of conference rivalries I'd name would be Wake Forest which has been dormat for many years but is coming back, and JMU which had some great games in the last decade of FCS. Those two, along with Liberty, are App's most common non-conference opponents since moving to D1 in '71.

Fair enough. I still think Marshall, followed by Charlotte and ECU, were good answers to the original question.
Non conference rivalries between G5 teams aren't too common, anyway. Memphis-Ark State, Navy-Army-Air Force, UTSA-Texas State, SMU-North Texas, maybe Houston-Rice, and maybe Marshall-Ohio are the only series that occur annually or at least consistently.
I will be interested to see which of the legacy Sun Belt schools (i.e., those who've been playing SBC football since all the way back in the days of... 2010) like Troy, ULM, ULL, and Ark. State view MTSU, WKU, and others who left for C USA as non conference rivals.

I know we don't have football and are considered irrelevant by many here, but UTA's is easily North Texas and vice versa. The biggest attended games of the year for either side are when we play each other.
Others for UTA include TCU, especially in baseball, and SFA, but not as much now that we aren't conference rivals. I'm still sure they hump them piney woods still though.

Arkansas state-Memphis
App state-charolette should easily become a rivalry
Georgia st/Georgia So-no one for now. I think definetly regional CUSA schools like the F_U schools could be competive fun series
LaLa/ULM-La Tech
Troy-UAB
South Al-no one for now but I bet UAB or even southern miss could become heated rivals
Texas state-UTSA
NMSU-new Mexico/UTEP
Idaho-historically it has been Boise state and wazzu

I really don't expect a glorified community college on the outskirts of Mecklenburg County with fewer fans than an FCS team and an abysmal record on the football field to become a rival. A handful of internet trolls does not a rivalry make.
Wake Forrest will become our signature OOC game going forward.

RE: Biggest Non-Conference G5 Rival
The G5 schools older App fans want to play don't strike much of a chord with younger grads. Since 2000 App has only played Wake & ECU twice and Marshall once. App and future SB member Coastal have only played 3 times. Not enough games with any of those guys to be classified as rivals.

The problem with Wake is exactly the issue you bring up with Charlotte. I guarantee you Wake Forest thinks the same about you.
To be a true rivalry, both sides need to care.

None but Marshall, Charlotte, and ECU all have potential.

UTSA?
Maybe. So far we've played 1 game, 4 years ago. Not exactly a huge sampling to go by there.
We'll see.

Football you're spot on . . .
We do have a pretty good history with 'em in the other major sports . . . . We certainly don't like them, and they feel the same about us . . .
Due to all our recent conference changes, as well as change in classification, we really don't have much history with anyone we currently play on a regular basis . . . And our traditional rivals have fallen by the wayside . . .

Yeah, I posted in reference to the assumption they are, or should be, our G5 football rivals when, in fact, we don't have one.
We don't play them again until 2017. If it does become one, I may not be alive to see it fully blossom. I think we'd have to get beyond that 2025 game for it to happen.

We played wake on a nearly annual basis from the 70's until 2001 when Jim Grobe ended the series. We had won 3 of 4 going into that last season when they announced that 01 would be the last year. It was either the largest or second largest crowd for them every year depending on if they played UNCheat. For them to renew the series now with a home and home says plenty about how most of their people view App. Of course they are P5 so they don't fit this discussion.
As others have said our biggest rivals in G5 haven't played us enough as an OOC to be rivals with. Marshall and ECU were former conference foes, but we've only played them 3 times combined since while we were still FCS. UNCC has all the right ingredients except they are terrible on the field.

RE: Biggest Non-Conference G5 Rival
As a follow-up to the OP, it's crazy how few annual rivaly games are played among G5 teams. I don't understand why school don't want to create long term series with at least one program. It's builds fan interest much greater than play a school two times then not seeing them again for 10 years. I'd much rather play a nearby CUSA team every year compared to bouncing around.
