When will there be a thread about how Vandy prevents the SEC from reaching $40M+ a year and should be sent to a then-weakened ACC/AAC? That's the next one in line on the hit list...
...but I think that Northwestern (with the union ordeal) will be the next school that gets demoted into oblivion (at least on CSNBBS). They're an easier target than Vandy for a couple of reasons.
Meh, there is also the recurrent agenda of of "schools named after a city should be closed and their profits given to Land Grant U", the every running "F* commuter schools"; the arbitrary "death to all the schools that were in C-USA v. 1.0"; and the "Directional Schools should be tarred and feathered".

But- Let's speculate-
If Wake were to find itself on the outside looking in, the school leaders would look for like minded schools.
So, Richmond and William & Mary come to mind. Tulane, Rice, and SMU come to mind.
Even someone like Presbyterian and Wofford come to mind.
If football was dropped, Wake would fit well with the current Big East. Even a conference with Emory and Davidson would be considered.
Emory's out unless they start offering scholarships and make two moves up.
That said, a conference with Wake, Davidson, Richmond, W&M, Tulane, Rice, SMU, and Tulsa would have potential—if you could convince the A-10 and AAC members that it wouldn't be a step back. I can't imagine George Washington moving, but I presume their demographics are more North than South. Vandy would be perfect, of course, but there's no way they're leaving the SEC. If they got the never-in-a-million-years hook that Wake did, though, they'd definitely be in.
Fordham and Liberty could be some options. Plus, it was not George Washington, but George Mason was interested in adding football. VCU is another that could add football. Dayton might be interested as well.
George Mason? Mason has offered club football for a number of years. I don't see Mason ever offering scholarship football.
VCU has the resources to start a football program. Like Mason, I don't see VCU offering football.
As for Wake- Wake is a great school with great resources. Unless the ACC somehow breaks apart, I don't see Wake ever not having football.
George Mason's new AD is in favor of scholarship football. I think FBS status is the goal. They could turn the club team to varsity and have them play in the Pioneer League for a few years, and then to a better conference.
VCU is right there like you have said.
Xavier, Vermont, Drexel and Wright State have club teams and could go to the Pioneer League themselves.
As it is from recent years that schools that seem to be serious about football are George Mason, High Point, VCU, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Coppin State and North Florida. Others said they might.

VCU is nowhere near serious about football. They've never so much as commissioned a feasibility study. There was talk about buying City Stadium, where Richmond played before going on campus, but I don't think that went anywhere, and if they wanted FBS football, it would essentially require a teardown/rebuild. There's never been administration support for it, and quite frankly, they don't have the money to invest in creating a program from whole cloth. I'd like to see it happen, but I'm resigned to it not happening in my lifetime.
The Pioneer League is non-scholarship. Nobody goes there with eyes toward playing even scholarship FCS, much less FBS.
Where are you seeing that any of these "serious about football" schools are even hinting at it?

As a graduate of George Mason University, I am not aware of any public talks about adding scholarship football. My former neighbor in my youth, and current Mason Athletic Director, Brad Edwards hasn't released any statements suggesting that Mason is adding scholarship football. In fact, I think the university academics are not interested in scholarship football at all.
Of course, this could change. I am just not aware of any movement to support the claim.

Cincinnati aspires to achieve leech status.
No, we aspire to have another chance at the big boy table. The last time we had that chance we won more games and conference titles in a five year span than your program has in decades.
Also, we still play some hoops...unlike you guys.
Let me put it this way, if for some reason you guys got left out, I don't see even the AAC giving you a spot. I wouldn't. Your best bet would be CUSA at that point. Welcome to the truth.

The series is 6-2 but if using 75% makes you feel better about it, go for it. Its also been 10 years since the two teams played. As for the Louisville fan's assertion that the ACC revolves around Wake, hyperbole can be fun, but the ACC's Carolina roots are quickly fading from the rear view. Greensboro's grip on the conference is all but gone, the conference tournament has moved, the addition of hoops powers UL and Cuse have shattered the tobacco road bubble the conference lived in for years and the need for the ACC to have a larger presence than just the triangle/triad all mean that Wake Forest just doesn't move the needle they like once might have. The B1G might settle for Wake in some end-of-days scenario but the Deacs aren't even on the radar.
ECU is also riding a five game losing streak against Wake forest since the year 2000.
Nice photo. I always wondered what happened to ECU football players after graduation. Good to see your alumni services is keeping tabs on them. After all, the key to a healthy program is keeping the alumni connected.

Serious question..........
Why do you want to keep trolling Pirate fans? Most of the comments (including mine) on here have been legitimate and aren't bashing Wake but simply opinions based on a "what if" question in the original post.

Fairfax is not Norfolk. Mason's mission is not ODU's. Mason is about location and location to DC. Diverting resources to football is not part of that mission.

You do wonder why they hired Brad Edwards in charge of the AD at GM since he played football.

Edwards has a good name in the Washington area because of his relationship with the Redskins.
I really don't think George Mason is going to have scholarship football. While the campus does have room for a stadium, there would be a big fight with Mason's teachers, Fairfax, and Fairfax County. Traffic is a nightmare around that area. The residents are fickle.
