RE: Josh is #9 of top 20 BB coaches pay.
I've heard he's not only #9 on the top 20 highest paid coaches list, but he's also #9 on the top 100 coaches list.

Last year he got his first NCAA win in his 15th year as a head coach.
He had been coaching the basketball black hole that was/is UNT hoops...just getting them to the NCAAs a couple of times, and having 5 straight 20+ win seasons got him the LSU job...plus his recruiting, experience, and ties to the school.
He has a solid team this upcoming season.
He recruited Shaq O'Neal to LSU and is one of his best friends. Shaq has helped him in recruiting. I wish he had gotten the Memphis job but our fans would have wanted him fired by his 4th year. Instead we got Cal and a vacated season. Plus his #1 recruit (Rose) hasn't given one cent to the program.
So you'd want Johnny, great guy withstanding, over Cal. That's just a line of thinking that I just can't relate to.

I don't think he's 9th anymore. I doubt if he's even in the top ten.
Someone needs to find an updated list.

9th or 19th the fact is that he's been paid in advance for a couple of sweet 16's (or better).
Here's hoping he can pay off one of those this year. He's assembled the roster to do it.

data compiled as of the NCAA tourney. You can see where CJP fits in with or without the bonus. With the bonus he would be about 9th. Without he would be about 13. Wow I didn't know he had bonus incentive. TigerGreg, where does he fit in. Based on that data, he is the highest paid coach outside a P5 league.

There is no fact here other than those stats were compiled prior to last season. Tell me what the facts are before and after this season.
Maybe, then, some of you will quit regurgitating tired, old complaints.

Looks to me to be about 16th overall. Basketball doesn't use P-5/G-5 divisions, so I don't understand your second question.
At any rate, those are still last season's stats. There have been many adjustments since then.

That doesn't surprise me because only winning at any cause is your motto. Johnny knew he wasn't getting the job and he thought Cal was right choice as I did at the time. But Cal put a black mark on this BB program but I guess you will except that as long as we win. Oh wait, we vacated the 2007/08 season and as he did at Umass in 96. Just win baby just win.

I think you just went way past being passive aggressive. We do have one thing in common and that is we want the tigers to win,

RE: Josh is #9 of top 20 BB coaches pay.
I was very disappointed in the coaching I'd witness this pass season. Coach Pastner is still my coach and I wish him the best this coming season.
I found this list with Forbes "The best college basketball coaches for the money", albeit it was written before last season was over I still feel it has merit
http://www.forbes.com/pictures/fiei45ghj...f-memphis/
My theory on what happened last season: Aki was the players' buffer to the head coach. I feel with him (Aki) not being there presented problems that most teams go thru that fans aren't aware of that are often ironed out before it's too late. Too late happened and in spite of it and injuries they managed a winning record. No excuses, just a theory.
Coach Pastner is a young coach who had a hiccup and I think he learned a valuable lesson from this experience. We now have a new assistant head coach who is great with kids. I can't wait to watch some Tiger basketball.

He got paid too much, too soon. And that gold plated contract with no wiggle room for downside. I guess someone was petrified of USC. Who knows.

RE: Josh is #9 of top 20 BB coaches pay.
Pastner can only go up. I doubt he ever gets in the situation he was last year, with 0 returners on the team with experience at the guard position. He is too smart not to learn from his mistakes. Yes it is painful to watch this process but maybe when the ball get rolling he will reward Memphis with faithfulness for investing so heavily in him and we can actually keep a coach and build a genuine powerhouse program. Maybe I'm looking at the bright side, I see the negatives, I just refuse to believe he is not going to correct these issues. The biggest one perhaps has been his rotation and quick yank of players who needed to be on the floor, it is easy to correct. Oh and pick a starting lineup and run with it. Let this team gain an identity.
