Article by Worthy says that Memphis is happy to pay him that much due to the fact of replacing Cal. and taking the Tigers to NCAA in four of his five years.
We've paid him about 5 million per NCAA tournament win.
Yep top 10 pay, top 10 facilities, top 10 support and unranked results.

Pastner has got to be the most overpaid college coach in the country.

Highway robbery.

It really is.
I didn't realize until the other day that it was our new AD who extended his contract. I thought it as Elvis.
The big dollar boosters did this in April 2013 when USC supposedly was interested in Pastner. I think he was making $1.9mm/ season and the money guys ramped it up to $2.65mm/season. If I'm incorrect on the salary data, please advise.

I work at FedEx. If management thought I was talking with UPS and offered me a 35% pay increase with four year contract with A FULL buyout that rolled over each April 1, I'd take it. Quickly. Is there ANYONE here that would NOT accept such an offer?

The salary is paid primarily by boosters, just like every other major college coach.

Pastner is being retained for next season. He must produce next season to the boosters and Bowen's full satisfaction or he is gone. More to the point, I believe "full satisfaction" means a Sweet 16 appearance. I further think that even if Bowen accepts the California job, he'll certainly brief the incoming AD about Pastner's status. Pastner will be on probably the hottest seat in the NCAA.

One key decision Pastner must make is does he stay at MEMPHIS for what promises to be a tumultuous season of intense scrutiny...OR...seriously consider other openings elsewhere for a fresh start? Even if he stays and advances to the S16 next March, how long does that give him with this fanbase and "top 10 program" level of expectation? Will he forever be compared to 2006-09? Yes, I think quite a few TIGER fans have that four year span as the bar for men's basketball. What if he then backslides in 2017? Or, what if he crashes the E8?

Is he happy at MEMPHIS? He needs to discuss this with his wife, father (who I think has some influence), trusted inside friends and make a decision. IF it's the latter, he needs to move on this quickly to get his name out there.
I don't blame Pastner. I blame the idiots who would pay a man so much for such unfullfilled potential.

ironically, the Tigers 2015 recruiting class is ranked #9 in the 247 Sports Composite

Except for believing rational people would set the bar for average performance at Memphis as replicating the best four-year run in NCAA history, I agree with this. Now that I think of it, though, "rational people" was not what he said, was it?
Rational thought would point to a legit chance to win the conference and a reasonable shot at the sweet 16 + most years. Teams with an identity, solid offensive and defensive strategy with a few wrinkles thrown in when needed and prepared every game. Put the players in position to succeed in every game and recognize how to motivate each individually and as a team. Solid substitution patterns and a strong presence on the sideline that is noticed by players and officials. Strong command of the gameplan that rubs off on the players. Killer instinct all the time with shoot then aim approach at times.

Nothing tells me Josh can do any of that.
They should pay the next basketball coach about 100 grand and give the rest to football

Winning is hard!!!
Maybe we've been looking at this all wrong. Maybe if we get him to #1, we'd have a better chance of attracting a good coach. I suggest the boosters triple his pay and put a buyout of, oh, about $1 in the contract.

Just a guess on my part, but I'll just betcha all of this has crossed Josh's mind.

Exactly no one should or would say he shouldn't have taken the gig but supposedly the money people were smarter.
