Sure you hate it for him, he's a nice guy and all. But would it stir up some insane, strong sense of emotion that makes you question the direction of the program?

Change is good.

I'd be very happy with a coaching change. Matter of fact, I really hope it happens. Hope I'm wrong, but things will only get worse as long as Pastner's the coach.

His contract runs through 2019, IIRC. Assuming it's fully guaranteed (I think it is), that's $2.65M x 5 = a buyout of $13.25M, as of today.

Anybody want to volunteer to make donations to Fred Smith? B/c he's not paying out that kind of money anytime soon.

I'm not weighing in on Pastner's performance at all, just pointing out the buyout situation.

Why on God's green earth would it be setup that way for such a risk ? I must be missing something. Thanks for the detail.

Can't believe we've continued to give him increases & extensions. He's done nothing to warrant them.

I have no doubt that there's some kind of loophole in that which will make the payout less than that in certain circumstances.

If Josh is the stand up guy many here insist he is he should own his failure to lead the team and resign without further compensation and let us get on with our lives.

Fred ain't the only big booster doe. That 13 mil divided by about 20 ain't as much. Plus there's always some negotiations that could happen.

RE: Would anyone on here really be that distraught if Pastner is fired?
Link: http://www.commercialappeal.com/news/pas...on-year-ne (from May 2013) ..."Josh Pastner's new contract worth $2.65 million a year; nearly a $1 million annual raise"

"Dismissing Pastner solely because of the team's performance would be costly for the U of M. The Tigers would owe Pastner the balance of his contract — as many as four full seasons' salary, if he's dismissed before the date the contract automatically renews — if they wished to part with him."

"Pastner's contract is in effect for the next five seasons, through 2017-18. Automatic renewals are included after each of the next two seasons, meaning the deal is structured to extend through 2019-20."

Math: $2.65M x 4 = $10.6M ... still a chunk of change. Why smart, wealthy businessmen would do this is beyond me.

RE: Would anyone on here really be that distraught if Pastner is fired?
well,

I am not trying to pile on. I really want to see this team and the program do well. 2:09 away from a national championship is a hard pill to swallow. Pastner will not get us back there.

Pastner was just a bad hire, as been said before. His contract is what it is because the business leaders/boosters simply bought the Kool-aid. They were stung by Cal and the subsequent NCAA sanctions. So, what they are paying for is Pastner's image, not performance.

But, the regular fan is still stinging from the 2008 National Championship game. We want to see the program succeed at its potential. With this much investment, there is no reason why this team can't compete for a national title every year. In order to do that, the program needs to be led by an actual coach. Pastner is good PR, but a terrible coach. What is happening is a huge waste of resources every year that Pastner gets to lead this program. He is just not ready to lead this program. It has been apparent since his second year, and not much has changed. This year should be his last, because it is going to take a tremendous COACHING job to even get a winning record and make the NIT, and Pastner has shown that he strength is PR, not coaching.

That can be done in payments. That is what a lot of schools do.

Ha. So when this team goes 18-13 and makes the NIT, are you gonna say Pastner did a tremendous job?

Sure, but I don't think that's the point. These big dollar guys don't have a cash flow issue, it's the amount. That's a huge buyout - period. Payments don't make that any better.

When can we question Pastner's everything from his recruiting to play on the court? What are we gaining from Pastner as Head Coach? Frankly, It seems he does just enough to stay employed.
