I disagree. If you are the coach you play whoever you feel gives you the best chance to win now. I don't agree with starting younger players over seniors to prepare for the future just like I don't agree with sticking with seniors that aren't getting the job done because of loyalty to seniors. None of the QBs have looked good.
What I do agree with though is to look for opportunities to play younger backups when those opportunities arise. But at this point I think the coaches are going to ride Bolden because they feel he gives the offense the best chance to get into a rhythm.
What I don't understand is how so many posters are turning on CC. The team was not remotely competitive in any of the MAC games last season outside of the WMU win. The receiving corps was weak last year and lost Donald Scott, Demarius Reed, Jay Jones, Quincy Jones, Julius Shelby, and Creel is coming off an ACL. Any coach knows that Eastern has no passing game so is going to load up against the run. We are starting receivers that wouldn't be on the two deeps, an O line that has struggled with pass protection for over two years and QBs Bolden and Roback have never shown a history of accuracy. The biggest offense of this staff so far has been to not get the offense to play above the level of the talent - they are playing at the level of the talent.
Lets throw in the loss of Tate at WR, Spearman's injury, the on and off again loss Hurcombe, Wylie and now more injuries and Roback. That's tough luck.
But as I pointed out I could not understand the staff not taking a TE in this recruiting class and the total lack of depth at that position. Some questioned why CC didn't take a QB although he late signed one who is now a WR. You are correct the secondary especially was horrible last year and it still is this year. The scary part of this is next year you'll have essentially redshirt freshmen being your entire depth at offensive line. I think CC and his staff overestimated the talent and hence you're starting to see them go the JUCO route recruiting wise and not high school. We may see a JUCO QB along with Alsobrooks and more moment ie Bell to another position. Yes Dennis its been dismal.
My view on QB:
IF Roback isn't the future of this program we are in deep do-do.
He has the best arm and gives us the 'best chance to win' of any QB on our roster and certainly better then some h.s. recruit.
I would not compare Alsbrooks (Sp?) to Roback unless one is a fan of the 'grass is greener...' point of view.
I assume Brossard, Pulliam, and Harris (is he the QB converted to another position) all 'failed' the test at QB (although some were QB/athlete).
So by my count we have six players who were proficient h.s. QBs. So we could go Roback, Bolden, Bell, Brossard and then the other two...
I can't see taking any more than that.
Alsbrook is a prospect for say 2017 or 2018.
Even 4-star recruit, Chance Stewart, at WMU is being redshirted.
True frosh QBs should be seen but not out throwing the ball around in a meaningful game and may need one year of OJT training (redshirt frosh) before playing as a redshirt soph.
