RE: PAC12 Reforming
Memphis Tulane and USF have declined invitations to the new PAC.
Gonzaga joining the PAC.
PAC still needs at least 2 football schools.

Can’t blame those schools looking at how much distance they would have to traverse.
USF would have to be transcontinental. No way do I join unless there is absolutely no other option if I’m USF.
Tulane isn’t a good fit by any stretch of the imagination.
Memphis would’ve been the best shot for the PAC. Guess they didn’t see any value in moving.

Apparently Gonzaga isn’t a done deal.

The PAC 12 next version is a mystery to me. No way to replace the teams lost. The question in my mind is still why did it collapse when alternatives were long distance and not very rewarding. I must be missing something, but I never followed the Pac 12 schools that much.

They maintain an automatic conference bid, they have P5 name until the next contract cycle, they have some buy out money.
I guess they figure that they can still get some money out of the deal

So currently the membership stands at 7 for both the PAC and the MWC.
Why don’t they just merger? This is stupid.

TexasFan, that's my big thing. Unless there are some schools in the MWC that most everyone agrees is dragging down the conference, this is putting a different name on the same conference. Buyout money is going to go away and WSU and OSU don't carry enough weight to make a difference in TV money. I just don't understand.

They won’t merge because PAC is trying to cherry pick at the moment
For the record I don’t think Tarleton is a consideration for the Mountain West.
I still believe the MW can get the schools they want comfortably IF ten schools is their target.
With the departure of Utah State things just got a whole lot tougher unless FCS is the route you are going to take IF you still want TWELVE.

Did not expect Utah State to be on the list. Either AFA and or a Texas school to be next, which one? If AFA does not go to PAC then they will go to AAC. I wonder when the MWC will start adding.

The two most obvious candidates are Utep & NM ST for the Mountain West
Sam Houston adds no value and is an outlier
Same can be said for Tarleton UNLESS Billy Ball surges to national prominence
I don’t follow or watch Basketball so I have no clue what level of play TSU men’s basketball has or can achieve short term. My guess would be midlings which doesn’t move the needle much

Would UTEP insist on schools "back east" in Texas to join the Mountain West? They had that in C-USA until recently. Tarleton and Sam Houston aren't SMU and Houston, but it's at least something.
If the Mountain West adds no one from the Pacific Time Zone, any Central Time Zone schools would be looking at two trips to the Pacific/Hawaiian-Aleutian Time Zones at most in football (two of Hawaii, SJSU, Nevada, UNLV). Even in basketball it would only require two weekends if scheduled correctly.

The Pac… 8-12 million per school per year, depending. OSU and WSU may have been a drag on the old Pac, but compared to the Mountain West, they do have market presence in those states.
(Would have been 10-15M if Memphis and Tulane joined)
Leftover Mountain West… $2-3M if UNLV sticks around, even smaller if they don’t. I’d argue there are Mountain West schools that the networks see as having negative value.

The PAC? is truly strange. Four schools are joining it in 2026, but meantime, how to they hold onto their qualifying position? The MW is going to be depleted. Right now is it 7 schools in each? I am way behind the information curve.

RE: PAC12 Reforming
The PAC has now almost exhausted their "war chest" but still needs 1 more to get to the magic #8.
Will they spend what is left to just to get UNLV? Not buying the reddit Hawaii rumors one bit.
The PAC will not get an AAC school because of the buyout figure in the AAC, so that leaves Tx State as the most likely candidate if they want to avoid another MWC poaching penalty.
I do not think Tx St would leave for an unstable MWC but would in a heartbeat for the PAC. So it looks as if it is either UNLV or Tx St for #8.
AFA may actually stay in the MWC which is surprising.
Cal Baptist might get a WCC invite soon if Gonzaga ( and maybe St Mary's) leave for PAC.
Tarleton's chances of getting a MWC invite just got a lot better today.

The PAC is at 7 and the MWC is at 6+1 as Hawaii is FB only and does not count as a FULL member ( 8 FULL members are required for FBS conference)

RE: PAC12 Reforming
At some point, a conference is going to have to go at the current speed. Conferences at the top can’t keep ballooning and conferences in the middle and bottom keep enough members. I’d rather have had the Pac, with its pompousness be the one, but as the WAC has shown, infill in the Western US is not guaranteed.

The thing is that’s all short term. The Pac didn’t get what it wanted in the last round, prompting the defections. The MWC’s deal is recent. So while OSU and WSU carry weight in their states, hard for me to see much increase in value after the buyout and old Pac revenue money runs dry. After that, this is just the MWC with a different name.
