RE: Matt vs McCarthy
This could turn out to be a real shat show...

Quote:House GOP Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fla., will not vote for either of the formally-declared candidates for speaker and will instead back former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on the House floor, he told Fox News Digital on Tuesday night.

Gimenez has been a steadfast McCarthy ally in the week since his ouster by a majority vote of eight GOP hardliners and every House Democrat.

"I'm still with Kevin McCarthy. I think that what happened to him was a travesty, and I just don't wish to be part of it," Gimenez said. "I’ll continue to vote for Kevin until Kevin tells me that he's no longer a candidate."

He left early during a closed-door House GOP forum where Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, were making their final pitches before a closed-door conference vote on Wednesday morning to pick Republicans’ new nominee for the gavel.

McCarthy told reporters on Tuesday that he’s asked Republicans not to elect him as a candidate in the closed-door Wednesday vote.

Gimenez said, "[McCarthy] said, please don't nominate him. That doesn't mean ‘Please don’t vote for me.’"

"Scalise and Jordan are going to do exactly the same thing Kevin McCarthy would’ve done. So why change?" he said.

Asked why he left the candidate forum early, Gimenez said: "I'm a big fan of movies, but I don't see them over and over again. And I've seen this movie, so I didn't feel like looking at it again."

He said he still intends to attend the Wednesday vote and will again stand behind McCarthy.

GOP Unity a Misnomer

It's not a simple one off comment. It's been a common rule of thumb in the legislature that the Dems can get things done but those things are terrible while the GOP can't accomplish anything.

Sadly, the Dems CAN govern. However, their policies suck ass. GOP OTOH only had one period of time where they were able to actually govern - which was when Newt was SOH and Clinton was president.

Not sure, but could be a number of things: 1) she's owning up to exercising poor judgement, 2) she's proudly showcasing her role in getting McCarthy out and she wants that recognition or 3) she's just letting us know that she's an Azzhole.

RE: Matt vs McCarthy
Internal vote 113-99.

Quote:Scalise secured the nomination 113-99 in a closed-door GOP conference meeting, defeating House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) in a close race that did not have a clear front-runner heading into the internal vote.

Scalise will now take his candidacy to the House floor, where he will be up against House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.), who Democrats nominated for Speaker on Tuesday night.

The floor fight could get messy. Candidates need the support of a majority of the chamber to take control of the gavel and Republicans hold a razor-thin majority. McCarthy required 15 rounds of voting to secure the gavel.

Reps. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Bob Good (R-Va.), two of the eight who voted to oust McCarthy, didn’t say Wednesday if they’d support Scalise. Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio), said he would not switch his vote away from Jordan.

Zero chance atm. There's over 30 republicans saying they will not vote for Scalise. They can only have 4 not vote for him and win. Maybe a few more if they just vote present or don't vote rather than vote against.

It's a shame Jordan didn't get it. But, we already knew he wouldn't ahead of time. At least most of us did.

RE: Matt vs McCarthy
FWIW--The New York Times seems to think both are worse for the nation (as in more difficult to deal with) than McCarthy. It quotes both Speaker candidates as telling the Republican Conference they wont throw away budget battle leverage in favor of bipartisanship like McCarthy did---which the NY Times says is bad for the country. If the NY Times thinks Republicans are electing a Speaker that is bad for bipartinsonship----that tells me we have upgraded at the position----even if its only incrementally.

Mr. McCarthy abandoned leverage to keep the government open through mid-November, and earlier to prevent a ruinous default. But both candidates to replace him have made it clear to their restive caucus that they intend to use the leverage he discarded.

“If we stay united, we can preserve leverage for the House to secure tangible wins in our impending policy fights,” Mr. Scalise, the current majority leader, said in announcing his candidacy for speaker last week. Mr. Scalise, as a member of the leadership team, voted for the recent deal to prevent a shutdown, but the signal he sent to the rebels was unmistakable.

Mr. Scalise is less incendiary than Mr. Jordan, but is no more likely to end his chamber’s chaos and bring any degree of bipartisanship to the House than was Mr. McCarthy. He blamed “Soros-backed elements of the Democratic Party” for committing acts of violence against Republicans. Long after the 2020 election was over, he continued to suggest the outcome was stolen, relying on a theory about the primacy of state legislatures that was shot down by the Supreme Court.

Jordan is supposedly going to throw his support to Scalise. Scalise will likely have to make some promises to get the over the top. I suggest he not make any he has no intention of keeping. Frankly, while I'd prefer Jordan----I think either is better option than McCarthy.

RE: Matt vs McCarthy
The problem with the old guard is that Scalise is likely their best option. Noone else would get his level of support, if primarily from sympathy. However, he has blood cancer and is clearly not up to the energy level thats going to be required. He also has a few dozen people who will not vote for him.

Jordan, on the other hand, only has a few who wont vote for him.

Hern is out there if they want to go to him. I'm not sure the old guard wants to do that. But he would have the support of the freedom caucus and most of the republicans.

What the old guard is going to try to do is stamp their feet, sky scream, try to derail anyone else getting the vote, and demand that one of their guys gets in, and that isnt going to work. They already did that with McCarthy.

Well, what I said all along would happen... is happening.

After a bunch of votes the republicans will have to start bending the knee to Hakeem Jeffries to have him bless a limp wristed al caps RINO nominee that enough dems will support.

The stupid party.
