There are other teams left on this schedule who will make the Rockets pay if that kind of bare effort shows up again in the first half. This team is not good enough to have lapses on both sides of the line of scrimmage in the same game
On the bright side, the team could have simply folded after Finn’s injury, so credit to them that they pulled it together & played their most inspired ball after that…and thankfully, the opponent was WMU.
I’d love to have Finn back as a weapon but he may be out for the year. However, Gleason has to start from here out. Momentum flipped when he started picking off WMU’s defense through the air.
Defense stepped up in 2nd half. Assuming we don’t build up anymore injuries, we’ll be fine although Westerns running in first half was concerning.
Nice come from behind win

One thing just came to my mind.
When we had the ball down around their 30 with over 4 mins to play. I totally didn't get the thinking. Slam the run 3 times with no significant gain, then throw it to the endzone on 4th (incomplete)? Why not run the offense like every other series and try to get a first down or mix it up and try to score? It was like a wasted series. If WMU scores again they're back in the game. I guess he was trying to take some time off the clock, but why waste a series when you have good field position with an opportunity to score? Seemed illogical to me.

Agree. Was that the series where we ran Connor W. Our freshman up the middle 3x? Penny went out, I thought maybe he took a finger to the eye? If it's the series I'm thinking. Gleason tossed a dime to Newton and he nearly made a fantastic catch.
I just couldn't figure out how we couldn't stop the runs up the middle. There were also a couple of catches where the reciever was way too open for a D1 defensive back too not be in the same zip code.

RE: WMU game
Fortunately, I tuned in at the start of the 3rd quarter and got to watch to the fun half of the game. Toledo is the MAC team everyone wants to take down, so expect more opponents to p[lay their best against us. Loved the depth on defense. We had a bunch of key guys out but backups stepped up. Oline is credible again. Run blocking is improving game by game. If we get Stuart back there will be a really good 1 2 punch with Boone. Gleason isn't a great passer but he's competent and the difference with Finn says something about DF's passing (that said, he's a miraculous runner out of the pocket). Been whining about it for decades but I hate replay. The delays on 2nd half reviews (combined with some long penalty discussions) nearly turned a fun half of football into channel turner. Every other big play (diving catch, turnover, score, sideline play) in college football now comes with a 3 minute pause to the action for a review or commercial. And we wonder about the poor crowds. We've turned a 2 1/2 hour game into a 4 hour affair.

RE: WMU game
I looked at the stats and Toledo has given up only 2 sacks on the year and the defense has recorded 15 sacks. We have 5 INTS. and have thrown 4. Can't find where we are at on fumbles lost and fumbles recovered vs. opponents.
Toledo averages 7.5 penalties/game and 62.8 yds/game. Thanks to the Illinois game, Toledo opponents are averaging 7.5 penalties/game and 72.3 yards.
After watching the Notre Dame v. OSU game, seems like my criticism of Toledo's poor tackling and lack of discipline and fundamentals was way overstated. I saw more issues with discipline and lack of fundamentals resulting in consequences that determined the outcome of that game - far more than in the Toledo-Western Mich. game. Seems like a lot of practice time is spent on the complex offenses and much less time on playing under control and not making costly stupid mental mistakes. Still have no idea how Notre Dame didn't know they only had 10 players on defense for the last 2 plays of the game. I saw it almost immediately (on the second play from the 1) when there was another obvious wide open gap along the LOS on the Buckeye's left side. On the 1st play, I thought they were a gimmicked defense, but I couldn't see where they were loading up. On the second play, when they lined up the same way - I started counting players. Got to only 10 just about the time the ball was snapped.
A lot of breakdowns for that to occur and not get caught. They were out of timeouts as well. In fact, I think they called a time out just before they went back out on the field short a player.

A great realization. USC was up 35-28 on Arizona State with 7 minutes left. 4th string QB for ASU, and they lost 29-0 to Fresno State a couple weeks back. No one pays attention to even top 10 teams when they pull away late, let alone Toledo coming back to win by 3 scores vs. another MAC team.
It feels like this fanbase expects 52-0 every week, and even then there is a gripe with 2 penalties or lack of QB substitutions. Posters showing a better than 20 game win margin over losses and calling that average... we have the 5th longest bowl eligible streak in the nation. Mediocrity doesn't even explain the fan support because we are still 2nd in that dept in the MAC.
The target is on our back. It's a hell of a lot easier to slip up to an EMU in front of 6000 fans when they have never been to a title game in 3 decades. The standard is Toledo. UMass, BSU and Miami will draw much better than their average for bouts with big dog Toledo.

I believe they did know. They felt they couldn't get the player in without penalty, which is where the mistake was made. The team on offense substituted so they could have run their player in. Bonkers all around.
Goes to the "sounds like a simple game to manage but it ain't." It's why they get the big bucks and we get to chastized them for being overpaid.

All this talk and one thing I know for sure, WMU QB doesn't get a sniff of any playing time if he was at UT. Now, their running back is another story, he can play for any MAC team.

Candle didn't have any injury updates at this week's presser on the players that were hurt during the game. He did say though that neither Beale nor Kelly were dressed for WMU.
