RE: WMU game
This team sure has potential. We see what they can do with Gleason at the helm 35 points in the second half. Can he be consistent? Wasn't last year - but tough to gain that if you rarely play, then play 1 game and sit the next 3 or 4.
Penalties need to be clean up. Ball security is bad, lucked out a bit on the Boone fumble at the 2 yard line.
Candle talks about "fixing the mistakes on turnovers and penalties". Not the first time that has been the subject of a post season talk. nor the 3rd, 4th, 5th, .... time.

RE: WMU game
Injuries are starting to really pile up on defense. Without Hook, Taylor, Mitchell and I don't think Ford played either at OLB the defense is getting really thin.
Hope Finn is OK. His head got slammed into the turf. Don't know what the injury is, but it didn't look good.
On the other hand, what a coming out party for McNeil-Warren. According to live stats, 13 tackles (8 of them solo), 1 INT, 2 PBUs and a forced fumble. That's a heck of a stat line.

Just looked at the play-by-play stats - it was Deshawn Holt who was ejected for targeting.

No doubt in my mind that Gleason should be the starter. We wouldn’t have won if Finn didn’t get hurt.

Finn didn't have a great game, but he also didn't fumble twice, give up almost 200 yards rushing to WMU's back or commit 11 penalties.
No, but Gleason came in and controlled the ball very well. When you have a guy that can throw accurately, it opens the field up. The team played better as a unit under Gleason. That is what matters.

Gleason QB rating today 217.6 and Finn 148.9.
Boone 24 carries for 211
Buckley 29 for 196.
Boone for POW again? Good chance for that.

Oregon smoking Colorado. 35-0 through 3 qtrs. That will put a quell on all the hype. Don't have the horses in the trenches.
Ohio up 31-0 over BG.
So much for hyping up Bazelak. Has 52 passing yards with 1 intercept

Yes it was Holt. Didn't seem to lead with his head, but there was helmet-to-helmet contact, so seemed like a 50-50 call to me.
If Taylor remains out, and Ford doesn't play again, losing Holt means the Rockets are really thin at OLB next week.

Hate to see ANYONE get injured. I don’t think we win this game if Finn QBs the full game. Offense just wasn’t clicking & 3-and-outs we’re putting too much pressure on the Rocket D. Had we continued to be down by 10 or more in the 4h quarter, I would not have liked our chances of throwing the ball to win it.

He also left his feet making contact above the shoulder. It was an effort play that drew a flag. Understandable call.

OL allowed zero sacks. And the Rockets tallied 269 yards on the ground. Important given the defense did not it’s finest game giving up more than 200 yards rushing.

RE: WMU game
This game was absolutely a warning sign. Relieved to have gotten the win, but we’re talking WMU here that had a 10-point lead at the half. There are other teams left on this schedule who will make the Rockets pay if that kind of bare effort shows up again in the first half. This team is not good enough to have lapses on both sides of the line of scrimmage in the same game
On the bright side, the team could have simply folded after Finn’s injury, so credit to them that they pulled it together & played their most inspired ball after that…and thankfully, the opponent was WMU.

I think Gleason is probably a t5 QB in the MAC who has fortunately, or unfortunately for us been just behind a guy a little better his whole career. Rourke is probably best in the MAC, but I'd struggle picking 4 more guys over Tucker.

I'm sure not for throwing Finn under a bus, but Gleason brought us back and won the game. And he can run, too.
I don't care who starts, but we really should be using two QB's.

If Finn is healthy why not use them both at the same time? Finn can run as well as any rb in the league and throw on the run when being pursued. A 2 QB lineup would be fun to watch.

Back from the game. Thoughts.
1. Stubborn Brother is a great pre game stop if you aren't tailgating.
2. We didn't need to get cute on the kickoff. SJSU performed it perfectly, we didn't. All we did is just give hope, momentum and great field position to an opponent we could have pinned deep and made a statement.
3. It was embarrassing how over and over they split right through the heart of our defense. They could not pass, why not stack the box and force them to throw?
4. The flags and delays were excruciating.
5. My guess it's a shoulder or collarbone for Finn. You never want to see your starting QB and a good kid like Finn get carted off. With Penny carving up their D, why even run Finn as much? On the play he got hurt it looked like it was a RPO and he should have fed Penny and got out of the way. The two INT's were just ugly, forced turnovers.
6. Finn just can't stick in the pocket, go through a progression and hit open recievers, Gleason can. Finn is a D1 athlete, but not at QB. Gleason has the ability and muscle to run when needed, but has those pocket skills to be a traditional pass first QB.
7. Boon should have just cashed in that last TD, it was too soon to do what he did. I know what he was thinking, but still too much time on the clock. Over all he's just a different player this year. His vision, speed and ability to break tackles is not something we saw the last 2 years......finally! I did see the strip fumble coming as he slowed, he had to know there was a trailer.
8. Newton is a true #1 reciever, wish he could have held onto that last TD. Gleason threaded the needle.
8. I agree with bccunn way above in this string. Candles teams never come in as the favorites, play like the favorites, dominate and make a statement. We shoot ourselves in the foot, dig a hole we have to climb out of. Stress the hell out of our fan base and then win ugly. Games like last year's BG and WMU games are inexcusable not coming in prepared and winning big against inferior opponents. We let WMU today stick around too long. Thank God for Gleason being plug and play, putting the team on his back and playing like we should have from the opening gun.
9. Almost forgot to say something about the OL. For two years they were our weak link. Not this year. Solid unit that will pile up some better passing numbers with Gleason.
I'm sure I'll think of more items to recap.

I can't imagine Finn being back anytime soon. If he can't go, I have complete confidence in Gleason. I've thought he has starter ability after seeing him play some significant minutes last year and he saved the season at EMU.
Finn is prone to off games like last week and the whole first half this week. I just don't get the sense it will be that much up and down with Gleason. It can only get better with him getting full time reps in practice. But now I'm worried if Gleason gets hurt, our new #2 is nearly a complete unknown.
