I can't think of any reason. Strategically there's no benefit. And arguably, for the other conference presidents to approve an extension would be a breach of their fiduciary duty as conference directors.

Given the founding of the MWC and the later WAC amputation when BYU left, you can't expect the MWC to be nice.

You don't prepare paper work until you are ready to leave. The weird part in this is SDSU seems to be acting on assurances from a conference (PAC), but doesn't actually have an invite yet. Otherwise, they wouldn't need to ask for a delay.

The PAC's delay in adding SDSU is somehow related to their media deal. Now whether SDSU is coming up as Team #11 or #10 is the question.

The PAC-12 media contract will determine who shuffles where. Just waiting on that.

If they don’t have a home it’s a hell of a bluff. It’s like telling the wife you aren’t leaving her but you are consulting a divorce attorney. Just like the wife, your current conference will begin making arrangements for life without you.

The fact that this very scenario is unfolding is the best evidence yet that the Pac is not close to finalizing an acceptable media deal. It would make no sense for the Pac to put SDSU in this bind if the conference weren't preoccupied with its own, much bigger problem.

The potential of this backfiring is crazy!

If you're the MWC you absolutely accept this as their exit notification and set a timeline for payments to begin.

SDSU doesn't have the votes from the Pac-10 yet.

SDSU doesn't have the votes from the Big 12 yet.

So, Kliavkoff did go shopping after all...sort of. He just hasn't purchased anything yet...and is focused on the bargain bin.

Maybe they've had an invite in the bag all along. But if not, they are really rolling the dice here.
