I keep a silent but effective sharp short brush hook and a subsonic caliber pistol close at hand. Subsonic rounds tend to flatten when hitting a hard surface and expend their full energy in the soft bodied target. If you have children in other rooms you do not want to use a supersonic round as the ricochet potential is much greater. Everyone needs a home defense plan with a silent weapon of some sort included. Nobody wants gunshots careening through the home when the family isn't gathered in one spot. 12 Gauge pumps with buckshot are effective and don't ricochet too much.

The plan should be for the wife to silently dial 911 and whisper the situation to alert law enforcement that you are armed, and perps are in the home. That makes them more cautious, hopefully, about who they engage if they arrive in time to catch everyone still there. Since there are usually more than one taking the first one quietly is important to protecting your family. Get him, and when you have to fire upon the second, usually the third bugs out. If possible, get your children into your bedroom before you engage anyone and stay in between your family and the perps. Happily, my children are grown. My wife is always next to me. That makes my defense strategy stronger.

That's solid, probably would work for most. My family all sleeps in my master and there is only one obvious way to the door. I designed the house to be easy to defend, especially that room. Being 30 minutes from the closest town calling 911 isn't much of an option. I've got enough crazy family within a couple hundred yards that less than 8-10 unwanted guests are going to be outnumbered and outgunned within minutes of the first shot being fired.

There's nothing like the compound approach to defray bad guys. There are several such arrangements with which friends of mine are involved and they utilize outside cameras on the perimeter of the area to detect and alert when people enter after hours.

I mixed in 2 180+lb Great Danes who don't like people around their property that are how nature says hands off. I could remove all the exterior doors from our house and sleep just fine. Lol

No, I don't want to leave a loaded weapon out and accessible in a home with children. Pretty basic common sense there.

My .45 stays is in a holster concealed in a false back of my nightstand. It's only visible from a certain angle while laying in bed. It has a 14.5 lb trigger pull so I don't have to worry too much with my toddler at this point even if she knew where it was. Admittedly I'll have to get more creative as she gets older.

My 12 gauge bullpup is concealed behind a Velcro flap inside the box spring of the bed. Most of my hunting rifles & shotguns are in a built in gun cabinet downstairs.

14.5 point trigger? Wow, that’s like a J frame smith revolver trigger.

DAO semi auto?

Yep, more specifically a Cobra Patriot .45 ACP. On the cheaper end of concealed carry spectrum, especially for a .45. Slightly above average quality, but with some minor tweaks and regular cleanings it has never failed to fire. It's too damned heavy to carry comfortably so it stays in the house as a last resort if I'm surprised while in bed. The go to at home is the 12 gauge if I hear them coming.

Well then, you could cover it all with a 1927A1 Thompson!

Taking books from one hand and placing a gun in the other. And we wonder why there are more shootings. Sad trend.

I'm wondering why JdTulanes first post in this thread is in response to someone who has a grand total of 2 posts, where both of the posts are in regard to the trans shooter in nashville who was properly disposed of.

That sounds like a very responsible approach to firearms storage. Mine is similar, but I have a bump in the night quick access safe next to the bed bolted to the floor for night access.
That's the goofiest thing I have ever heard. What do you think, someone is going to go into your room while you are sleeping and use your gun irresponsibly? Keep it chambered on top of your safe and put it in there when you leave.

I was told not to touch any weapon when I was a child and obeyed. Maybe raise kids that obey.

Maybe when they grow up they obey laws and dont decide to cut their privates off and murder children

Pretty basic common sense.

Yep, if I had ever touched my old mans service revolver I'd have wished he shot me instead of what he would have done.

My kids knew from the time they could understand simple sentences not to touch dad's guns.

How are you adding to the discourse here? This is just spamming the thread.

GFY

Agreed.

I love how the left tries to act all civil when they are losing an argument when you know deep down they are skyscreaming on the inside.

Fuggabuncha discourse.

Both sides are guilty of censorship and both sides are guilty of promoting bad legislation that has led to a bevy of unaccounted for or inappropriately carried firearms and severly untreated or mistreated mental health. This is a bipartisan issue with bipartisan failure.

Mostly agree. So how do we get party A to stop proposing legislation that demonstrably does next to nothing to prevent criminals and the mentally ill from accessing firearms but does place ever increasing burdens on the millions upon millions of lawful gun owners which of course forces party B to point to the constitution and shout "you can't do that!"?

Biden wasted no time in calling for congress to pass his gun legislation which I believe includes the ever vague "assault weapons ban". It was distasteful to pounce so quickly and make this partisan and political, but foe the moment let's assume a new assault weapons ban is enacted. We all know that the millions of weapons that would fall under such an ambiguous classification aren't going to be forfeited or taken off the streets. How does that stop the next shooting? Magazine capacity and fire rate didn't factor into this shooting, someone could have done the same with a lever action rifle. What's next, ban all firearms?

The media had twisted this to make the shooter the victim in less than 24 hrs. Some hinted at it, others were quite blatant about it. Some elected officials seemed to support the shooters actions. Just last week a media platform was used to suggest that killing Christian conservatives was an acceptable course of action rather than the already violent shouting down of speakers.

There are already indications that this won't be pursued as a hate crime or domestic terrorism even though the shooter left a manifesto. That manifesto either needs to be published to show the was a personal attack on an individual and the school/victims were collateral, or if it demonstrates this was a hate crime/domestic terrorism then it needs to be pursued as such. If party A is hesitant to apply the law evenly, then party B is going to dig their heels in even harder against new legislation they know won't be properly and fairly applied.

Lots of wasted time and effort arguing against one another, partly because the two sides don't speak the same language or share a common vision for the future of the country.

CNN did a special comparing the police response tonight between Uvalde and Nashville. Knowing now that 3 of the kids in Uvalde died after the initial attack I don't know how any of those officers can live with themselves.

lol... not the ones I know. They're FULL of drama. You might say they're Drama Queens.

Seriously, though. My close exposure is based on a family member and a few members of a local dance company.

Granted, they're all involved in the Arts (including my family member).

Then I have limited exposure to a few former classmates via Facebook. There's one in particular that appears to border on radical activist.

There are a couple of former classmates that caused me to say, "Hmm... Never knew they were gay."
