It is what can happen when you prepare as if you "know" you can't lose. Confidence is great, but I believe it never crossed the guys' minds that the season could end that night. That going through the motions would be good enough.

I think the problem is clear.
You can't lead others without self-discipline and maturity.
The bottle throw showed a lack of both.
If he's going to win the big one he has to build self-discipline and maturity.
Until people hold him accountable for his actions it's not going to change.
A team takes on the character of its coach.
Ever think that the reason the team made the mistakes at key moments is because they have the same control issues as Penny?
Good Lord. Throwing the water bottle was the least offensive thing he could have done at that point.
Are you gonna rip Izzo for breaking a board in half on the sidelines this weekend too??

I agree. I wish he had not done it but mainly because I have read 4 or 5 articles now on the Penny bottle throw and while they mention the timeout miss it is mostly second hand... "Penny expressed his frustration after refs missed a timeout call".... show the freaking video, show everyone how multiple people were calling timeout long before the jump ball occurred. I dont hold it against him at all though. We did get screwed on that play.

Problem is it should have never come to the refs blowing a timeout call. We had possession with under 10 sec. That's even after we missed FTs & had several poor possessions late with that slowdown, run clock mentality. We blew it, plain & simple.

RE: The most immature mature team
This game somewhat reminds me of the Kansas title game loss, in that most focus on the last play where we werent given a time out. In the 2008 game, the real killer was the inbound steal and 3 pointer with 1:45 left If that never happened, it never wouldve come down to free throws.
In this game, if they dont put 0.6 seconds back on clock and they dont hit a miracle shot that they then go back and add a point, I dont think they ever climb back close enough to win. We got up 7 and that was such a huge shift of momentum.

Totally agree. If FAU had hit an out of this world contested 3 to win, it would have been easier to live with - I would have felt like we at least did our best to defend it. On the other hand, letting the inbounding guard waltz uncontested to the basket for a layup while up only 1 point is just mind-blowingly poor defense and shows a lack of situational awareness. I can understand Penny’s throwing the water bottle after witnessing such poor defense, which we had prided ourselves on.

Yes, we did. But our own unnecessary, unforced turnover on the previous possession and the astoundingly inept defense on the last FAU inbounds play were the real reasons we lost.

McCadden totally overplayed the guy, ran right by him, allowing him a clear path to the basket. And FAU's big guy did a nice job of boxing DW out. It worked really well, but still if McCadden would have kept the guy in front of him I think FAU has to take a diffent more difficult shot.
