RE: NIT Bid Stealers
CBI is still a thing and has actually found a good little niche on ESPN2 and everything as a 16 team tournament of the willing
CIT became The Basketball Classic and seems to be the less stable of the two.

The AQ’s were meant to give some representation to these other players. When it gets full, though…lowest hanging fruit are big schools.
Last year there were 11 teams that used the NIT insurance.
At minimum 8 of them could be considered bid stealers. I would argue 10, all but North Texas, actually were.
With 8 to 10 Bid Stealers you didnt start to get into the bubble territory until you reached the mid 60's/early 70's
Based on seating it looks like Virginia snagged the last NIT at large bid with their NET of 68.
Colorado got in with a NET of 74, St. Bony with a NET of 75, and Oregon with a NET of 76, Belmont with a NET of 79
The highest team with a record above .500 that got left out was 17-15 St. John's with a NET of 64. After that it was Fresno St that got left out with a NET of 77.
With a NET of 40, it would be a MAJOR snub if Liberty was excluded.

RE: NIT Bid Stealers
The team I really wouldn't wanna be right now is Kent State. #2 in the MAC with a NET of 69. No insurance whatsoever and square on the bubble of the NIT. Bid stealers are prime to knock them out of the postseason.
Utah Valley is another #2 in the WAc with a NET of 74

and Youngstown State is down 15 2nd half. They could be #6. And half the tournaments haven't even started yet!

YSU was just down 6 and is now down 8. They're in trouble but they have a chance.

What did NCstate have when they got left out in 2018 or 2019 whatever it was?

No it wouldn't be, they're 0-3 in Quad 1 and 1-2 in Quad 2. They lost their only games against teams with a pulse and were particularly obliterated by Alabama (95-59). They also lost games to Eastern Kentucky and Lipscomb. Yuck, no way is this an at-large profile. Their best win was over Bradley.

33. Keatts canceled a home-and-home with a Final Four team and ended up with one of the worst OOC schedules in the country. He screwed him team over.

They need to not have a crazy number of NIT bid thieves. We're already up to 6 now. If that number doubles or goes even higher, that spells trouble for them. Also need to root for teams like Florida Atlantic and Charleston to win their bid or else that could dimiinsh the real number of NIT spots.

Keep in mind that NET ranking is not much of a factor in committee decisions about who gets invited. The only thing that really matters to them is how a team performed against Quad 1 and 2 and whether they lost to Quad 4 teams. You can boost your ranking with a lot of wins against cupcakes, but the committee will ignore that, as they should.

The net factor is only used when they want to justify inviting a 16-15 power conference team over a 27-5 small conference team

Agreed. This is where the concern comes from. There’s a pecking order of sorts, and you’re getting your AQ’s but other bubble teams. This along with the more current guidelines for field selection. AQ’s and “first out” lines aside, I think ESPN gets to choose that remaining group. Getting games into bigger venues/gyms still carry importance in a way overall records and NET really have.
