Theres some FCS coaches that could be good at this level. See JMU…
If they are running a good scheme, imagine what can happen if you put better players in it. Hes going something right because there were some P5 programs after him too.

Some schemes can work at any level as long as you have the personnel to execute it. Even with better defenses in FBS.

True. But can they evaluate and recruit that talent at the FBS level? That’s part of the job too. Hopefully they realize the recruit who was a star at Fordham may not be able to get off the bench at a good SBC level team. We’ll see. I’m certainly rooting for their success.

Most of the teams in college run very similar schemes. How many teams don't run a version of the spread offense? Its not like FCS teams are running different schemes than FBS teams. Obviously they may run some things slightly different but there are only so many play calls at the college level. Its about talent and how the offense is executed by said talent.

Having said that, our offense will be slightly different than last year, it appears. You can see most of Fordhams games on youtube. More zone blocking. The WRs will make post snap decisions based on their 10 yard stem. It appeared to me our passing game last year was more focused on pre snap reads. You will also see the WRs split out wider than our guys were this past year. The offense opens up running lanes because of how spread out the defense is. They cause some confusion in the secondary and get WRs running wheel routes vs. safeties. The QB from Fordham didn't have that strong of an arm but they had a lot of guys running free in the secondary.

I actually think the offense could help Wolff. His arm strength will help, but it will be a very simplistic offense for him and he will only need to read one side of the field. Thus, it may help him get rid of the ball quicker. The Fordham QB wasnt a true runner but def. a better runner than Wolff. The TEs werent used a ton.

Oh, and its been announced. Wright, Reihner, and the assistant OL coach are out. The Fordham OC and OL coaches have been hired.

This good news. I’m glad Rahne is willing to move away from his scheme. ODU’s offense needs fresh ideas.

The spread thrives when you have speed in space. I don’t know if the current roster fits, but it didn’t fit the scheme from last season either.

I'm ok with this hire, good stuff. What we had wasn't working most games. As we seen FCS-FBS line, has been blown apart.

Do we have a QB on the roster to run this offense?

The “FCS coach” stink is not really a valid objection to this move. Likewise the FCS ppg stats and offensive player awards arent a sign this guy will be a superstar FBS coach.

The key to this hire is can he and Rahne and the other coaches get along and improve the team. So far I see reasons to expect that they will develop a strong working relationship.

1. This hire was made very early in the hiring season. Minimizes the turnover shuffle time and a clear sign Decker wants to come out to ODU asap.

2. Rahne is yielding QB coaching to Decker. Rahne has never trusted anyone else to do the QB coaching. The fact he trusts Decker is a great sign. Some of us specifically asked for a QB coach in the other thread and that box is now checked.

3. Decker is bringing on several of his own staff. This is key. Having his own assistants means the knowhow for implementing his scheme is onboard without having to convince or train current staff.

The “Wilder was FCS and this guy was FCS so he might not be good at FBS” is simplistic. Notice how BW isn’t coaching at FCS right now? He wasn’t bad because he was an FCS coach. He was just bad.

I think it's also a good sign (if I'm understanding the wiki right) Decker already has experience with installing his offense and adapting it. There's a good chance he can remake our offense just the same.

I like the new OC hire. Can't argue with the success he had at Fordham, and it's not like he is replacing an OC from ODU that put up lots of points here. Also, the play calling is sure to be better and hopefully we have seen the last of the QB never keeping it on the option play. All together it should be a significant improvement on the offensive side of the ball next season assuming we get some decent players to work it with.

Great situation for Decker. Almost anything he does will be a huge improvement.

Most offenses are similar nowadays. The biggest differences are the wide splits of the WRs and how they adjust routes post snap at the 10 yard stem.
